Title: 3 weeks of drinking, hanging out with friends, pure enjoyment=EURO 2012
Post by: wut on June 07, 2012, 05:13
It starts tomorrow. I can't wait! It's been to years since the world cup and I really miss hanging out in outdoor cafes with my dawgs, drinking beer having fun and just messing around poking each other about their teams (that lost) etc.

Which country is your fav? Portugal is mine, because they are the "European Brazilians" looking at their style of play, really mouthwatering football that they're playing. I like England (mostly because I watch premier league all the time and also because Stevie G is the captain) as well and Netherlands.

Portugal is my fav too, I guess thats easy once I am portuguese, looking forward for the first game in Saturday, like you said its a lot of fun and I will watch Portugal and other games too, not that I am a big soccer fan but the EURO or WORLD cup is just too good to miss!

just hope that Portugal got over and forget the 2 first friendly games were we sucked..

Yeah I heard they were pretty dismal in the last 2 friendlies and that the manager isn't too good as well. But I still hope the most beautiful style of football wins, they'd really deserve it, after all you've got so much stunning individual, it's not only CR7, but also Nani, Meireles etc.

I am a big football fan, but only for a couple of years now. But I've always watched EC and WC, it really is something special, olympics can't come even near it for example. Lately even a lot of girls are watching the games, so it becomes even more interesting :)

true, woman are becoming more and more sports fan and I guess soccer in particular (believe its not only about players legs or other) perhaps they got sick of going to shopping or staying in home when man are out having a few beers watching their teams

the other great thing of watching here in Portugal is the stunning weather, we have tons of big screens around the famous squares and its just a stunning atmosphere, sure other capitals have this kind of show too

Soccer? Lol, you sound like an American. I dunno what got into them, but loosing interest for shopping (at least window shopping) is surely not it ;) . But I like it, the atmosphere is different and they don't always come, so you can easily have a boys night as well. A perfect combination, I'd say.

Yeah, Iberian peninsula seems to be the only place in Europe that has normal weather this spring. And the climate is always nice in Lisbon. I've been there a couple of years ago. We too have lots of bars with big screens, a town square too, but usually just for the big games. After all football is (as many say) the second most important thing in the world ;)

ahah that said lets continue the futebol talk :D I am never very positive and I believe most players like you have talked about are really good, CR is certainly the star of the stars but we portuguese always think that he does play very well in his club not for Portugal, I hope he continues as strong as in Real ;D

we have a very difficult group too, canīt wait to see how it goes...

He was insanely good in la liga, 46 goals :o . Indeed, just like Messi, can't score for Argentina as well (Higuain and others have to do the job, but they really have a ton of top drawer strikers).

Yes, the group of death. I hope Portugal and Netherlands advance to quarterfinals

not an easy group yep, the problem with Portugal is the first 10 minutes, if they score its all good, if not its a disaster, I believe we will do insanely bad on the first game like always but after that we will learn the lesson.. portuguese team kind of give up if other team score, not like most of other big teams :-\

Ibro is good, but someone should break his bubble; he thinks he's the best in the world :) . His mentality is similar to Balotelli's.

I like Larsson, great player.

I couldn't watch it, I had a training, but would watch the game anyway. Greeks are not watchable, it's a great shame such a team won the tournament in 04. I'm watching Russia: Czech republic right now. Poor football again, at least when it comes to Czech and their defense (looks like 8th graders are playing on those positions:), not up to the task

exactly, Greece is just too much, for me football is all in the attack not the way they play it but today they kind of made some good attacks too

I've watched the highlights only, but they were mostly showing only yellow cards, penalty kick etc. Chealsea can play attractive football at times as well. Most mostly they're so hard to watch, they're playing boring, disciplined, robot alike football, like the Germans, and are mostly just defending, especially if they're in the lead, they have all of the players on their half all the time, 10 out of 11 in the box. And they've won the CL. I just hope that because of that teams won't be playing in such a way. I like attacking, open football as well, that's why I'm a Tottenham fan. And that's why I like Portugal, Netherlands and England. Besides Greece, Spanish team is also very hard to watch, they're even worse than Barca (I can't stand their style of play). I was checking the schedule, so many good games in the next few days.

The Russians played very nicely yesterday.

I'm a big Germany fan, because of the tactical soccer they play. But i guess it's not always as nice to watch. Today is going to be a good game (Germany - Portugal)!!!

Do you guys also play soccer, or just watch?

1:0 for Germany - I can live with that. The Germans did get lucky but as some of you may have seen the Champions League final (Bayern Munich vs. Chelsea) it doesn't take a pretty game play, in the end the score is the only thing that counts.

Can't wait to see what the Dutch are bringing to the table in the next games - lots of pressure now.

Great second day!

Sorry about the 1-0 game last night.  Neither team looked very good,  both teams are going to have to play better if they expect to have any success in this tournament.

It was a rather disappointing game, luck was on Germany's side. The best game so far was Russia:Czech rep, mostly because Czech defense was non existent and we saw many goals. But their style of play is a bit crude. A big game today, Spain:Italy, but I'm afraid it's going to be rather boring, a game of million passes on one side and just defending all the time, especially it they score first on the other, but the second game could be interesting, although outsiders are playing (looking at this group). I can't wait for the England:France game tomorrow. England is my last hope :) . They're not in the best of shape, especially without Rooney they're a bit toothless, but France has been dismal in the last few years as well. They should even play on the Euro, since the ref decided the last qualifying game vs Bosnia in their favour.

The Game yesterday was very tactical. The defence from both teams where standing very good and i think thats why it was rather boring to watch. Germany got very lucky in the end!

Can't wait for todays Spain - Italy game and tomorrows England- France game :)

Yeah, a player was off side when they scored the 2nd goal and the ref didn't give them a clear penalty. They're always lucky, just like Italians.

The offside doesn't count if the pass comes from the other team. In this case the Ball came off the Irish players foot.
But the refs really where a bit against Irland. That was a clear penalty!!!

No, no, no!

Ireland's player kicked the ball  just before Mandzukic shoot for that goal... That was not offside!

Italians are lucky, that is sure, but Croatia is opposite story, remember Quarter finals with Turkey on last Euro...

A player (or two) was in off side position, when one of the Croatian players shot from outside the box (a few seconds before the ball bounced back to the Irish player who assisted Jelavic), the second situation was OK, the way you put it.

Do you remember how they got to the 3rd place in '98? You can get more lucky than that, lucky draws all the time, no tough opponents (when they got them in semi final they lost). They are good, they play nice football, they could have won yesterday's game even without the refs help, since they were better and even if there was no offside postion when the second goal happened there was a clear penalty and imagine how the game would change if Irish would score the penalty and it was 2:2 with 30 minutes to go ;) . All in all Croats are way better than the Irish, but no one know how the game would end if in fact that penalty would be rightfully given.

As far as i know, that doesn't count as offside, since the players where in a passive offside (the player with the ball wasn't passing to them). As long as the players who where in the offside position don't obstruct the opposite players, everything is fine.

Still, the situation was very unlucky for the Irish players.

Today England - France is going to be top.

I'm betting on France. Benzema is in my eyes one of the best strikers around. I'm also a huge Ribery fan (because of he's soccer and not he's looks  ;D)

Indeed, those players affect gameplay by obstructing, how can I put it, narrowing goalkeeper's view.

I'm all for England, I hope Stevie G scores one of his phenomenal 30m goals. But without Rooney, it's going to be tough, just like if France was playing without Benzema. Well almost, since Benzema is not as good, not to mention all around player :P

I think I can't understand; Why on earth didn't Hodgson bring Sturridge, he's in great form and would be needed in offense in the first 2 games. Instead of him Carroll and Defoe are playing :s . It's like Spanish manager not inviting Soldado, but Torres, beats me...

They probably played for a draw, since it would be enough. Ukraine and Sweden will be a piece of cake, especially ENG:UKR when Rooney gets back and shows Shevchenko what time it is. I'm so glad Englad finally has a great keeper and defense is solid as well, with Gerrard (why???) playing as defensive midfielder in front of the Chelsea's brick wall. Not nice to watch, I agree, pure tactics, but so were all the games so far, except for SWE:UKR. Portugal disappointed me the most, their style was diametrically opposed to what we're used to, for what I love them. CR didn't show much either, nor did Nani, which is my fav Portuguese player

They did what they had to do. England are missing half of their best players, through injury or suspension, and were playing a technically superior team in their first competitive match under a new manager in 30'C of heat. All things considered I thought they played fairly well and, more importantly, got a result that keeps them in the competition.

What I really don't get is why the Portuguese allow that posturing c**k Ronaldo to act as if every game is just a exhibition match for his own talent. It's ridiculous. I'm sure Portugal would actually play much better without him.

I suspect that Ukraine will prove to be the dark horses of Euro 2012. They played much better than their FIFA ranking of 52 would suggest and Sweden were totally under-prepared for them.

What do you mean half of the players? AFAIK Lampard, Barry and Cahill are injured, Rooney has a 2 game suspension and I dunno for what reason, but he decided to bring Carroll in instead of Sturridge. I guess he wanted to have one tall player, now that Crouch is out of the picture, thinking it may be the best strategy for some games.

I think only Rooney and Cahill are the key players, that are really missed. I'd say yesterday only Rooney was really missed, especially after Milner missed an empty goal (fu*k me, he's got Torres' abilities to hit the back of the net), Lescott did a fine job, even scored the only goal. I just don't know why on earth Gerrard is playing as a defensive midfielder, especially with Lampard missing. Who's going to score all those 20-30m goals. They used to do it together, playing side by side. Now no one is doing that.

donīt know about you guys but England kind of dissapointed me, very weak and defensive, not usual from them, looking forward to other matches... Shevchenko on the other hand was incredible, wasnīt he "injured" on his back?? :o

CR didn't show much either, nor did Nani, which is my fav Portuguese player

right, Portugal was dissapointing, I hope that tomorrow they will play as they should and know! that said I believe we deserved at least a draw against Germany but its football and the goals are the more important...

regarding CR I saw some stats saying he touched the ball only 33 times, which tells how Germany havenīt allowed him to play his best, not an excuse yep but there werenīt much times where he was "alone"

Indeed, they have the finest players, hell it's Barca without Messi, and those that are missing (Marcello, Alves etc) are substituted with the likes of Ramos etc. I dislike their Barca like game of thousand passes, but they're still a bit more pleasing to watch than Barca and there's a lot more action in from of the goal, long distance shots from Alonso etc. Torres's first and Fabregas's goal were spectacular.

Croatia was saved by the ref, Di Natale wasn't off side when he had a clear path to the goal and we all know what would have happened.

Indeed!

Scottish fans are the same, they' don't start sheat, are nice and friendly and they drink a lot (meaning spend a lot). I remember them years ago when they came to play a friendly game. They stayed for days afterwards, some even for a week or two, really cheerful ppl. And they're not as cheap as everybody say they are, they even raised a nice amount of money for a good cause (I can't remember what it was anymore)

I remember Spain supporters thinking if Torres was really needed, sure he is but yes Spain could have 2 or 3 left and still very strong, incredible team they could have scored 7 or 8 not "only" 4...

The recent changes certainly haven't been a benefit to me.  Even though I'm a relative newbie and have a small portfolio I have been regularly uploading and have enough history to see this drastic change.  Average sales over the past 12 months has been 11 images, ranging from 8 to 17, most months in double digits but half way into June and only ONE lonely Sub sale to date.  SS and IS have been cruising along at the usual pace, FT has been steady with regular sales but here, and 123RF have seen a drastic downturn over the last 5-6 weeks.  I know this is pretty meaningless to those with bigger ports and more history, but it is does refute the claim that all the glory is going to the newer contributors.  I've seen the sales turn for the worse too.

I was disappointed as well with their game, but they really didn't deserve a single point, their defense is beyond pathetic, Robben is an egoistic maniac, Sneijder hasn't done a thing, Van Persie scored that great goal, but that's about it.

I just hope Portugal and England keep on going the way they did in the last game or two (Portugal)

Realisticly, I'd say Germany and Spain are going to play the finals, I said that before the start of EURO, but I'm really hoping Portugal and England get as far as they can. Now that Rooney is coming back, it's going to be interesting, but they're really missing Cahill and Lampard

I know that you can't compare the Champions League to this tournament, but when it comes to winning a game and what it takes to win a game it's still pretty unpredictable.

Sometime it's just luck. I doubt that Danny Welbeck pulls another one like the 3:2 for instance.

But Rooney can, he's consiatent and second best striker in the tournament (now that Ibra is out there should be no doubt about that). He can do heel kicks, bicycle kicks, has a good long distance shot. And Istill hope to see a beuty or two from Gerrard, so far he was delivering top drawer passes in to the box that resulted in goals

And just to paint a picture about what I meant with waiting for a beauty from Gerrard, I had something like this in mind You Beauty (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b87LQL7ij3w#). I doubt we're gonna see anything like that from anyone in this EC, but if he did take 'em all the way to win the tournament like he did in 2005 with Liverpool winning the champions league, that would really be spectacular, especially since they were considered outsiders.

Whether all of the ball crossed all of the line is somewhat irrelevant as the player who 'scored' it started his run in an offside position (which was missed by the linesman). If there had been a review system, like tennis, cricket, rugby, etc, then the goal would not have been awarded.

True to a certain extent. According to the rules you are absolutely correct BUT the UEFA is having problems implementing sensors into the ball to track it.

In this particular situation the tracker would have signaled a goal even though the referee didn't see the offside.

Although you are 100% correct that the goal should not be awarded, it's very unfortunate that the offside wasn't noticed and the play not stopped.

To see your shot go behind the goal line and then not getting the score is utmost frustrating.

The way Ukraine was playing, IMO they deserved that goal but soccer is not about who deserves anything. The lucky one, dipping the ball into the goal after some funky trajectory path is the winner here. I wish Rooney would have scored in a more spectacular way to get things straight.

Like I said - close one.

According to the rules you are absolutely correct BUT the UEFA is having problems implementing sensors into the ball to track it.

I think it is FIFA rather than UEFA that are dealing (or not) with the issue. The system they are currently testing is Hawk-Eye, which has been used successfully for several years in cricket and tennis, and requires no sensors in the ball. Hawk-Eye uses high-speed cameras to track the ball and triangulation to work out it's exact position and also predict the future flight if required (for lbw decisions in cricket for example).

I'd love to see a review system introduced into football in which the captains of each team could challenge the ref's decision, say twice in each match for incorrect challenges, and technology used to determine the outcome.

+1 but not on faults

Since this is a European tournament I believe it's under the direct control of the UEFA. The FIFA may suggest certain control systems but the UEFA may make their own decision about that.

Be that as it may, there are several ball tracking systems being tested not just the one you mentioned.

I'd like to see a solution that provides instant results without the need of "challenges" or game interruptions.

This is what sets soccer apart from many other sports that use such technologies like American Football or Basketball where the game play is constantly stopped ANYWAY, regardless of challenges.

I feel the whole spirit of soccer will be lost if such interruptions would be allowed for the sake of figuring out if a ball was behind the goal line or not.

I also agree. It ads so much discussion potential :)

I noticed this when watching tennis. Years ago my friends and i would discuss non stop if a ball was in or out, nowadays the players just challenge on the big points. Yes the challenges are very exciting while they are happening, but 10 min later the whole situation is already forgotten.

it was a very weird moment once the 4th or 5th referee was there but sleeping...

I think it that particular situation it was very hard for any human being to "see" that actually happening from a referee standpoint (even the one standing on the goal line).

These guys don't have it easy.

It would have saved a lot of aggravation if they looked that the freeze frame to make that call instead of relying on (error-prone) human eyes.

I don't play, just watch. And I love playing the tournaments of guessing results with my friends. Right now I'm leading, but with a small margin. :)

I bet Portugal 1x0.

Czechs are a 2nd grade team. I really liked them when they were playing at EURO 04, with Nedved, Baros (that was in form back then), Smicer, Koller. But this team now is something else, just a shadow of that team. And they also played beautiful football, just like Portugal. I think they lost in the semifinals to Portugal in 04.

Anyway hoping for Ronaldo&Nani show :)

Very exciting game! One of the best at the Euro.
The Italians really deserved the win! They where dominating most of the game.

Italy - Germany is going to be really exciting!!! Hope that germany wins!

what was exciting about this match? the crappy England playing defensive all of the time? England is playing like they never done before, very sad!

only saw excitement on the penalties.. IMO it was the weakest game of this EURO so far, better to see Ireland supporters singing with 4 goals on their net

How much did you win ;D

I agree with Luis, it was such a boring game, both sides played badly. Italy probably deserved to win, but they weren't great.

Were you watching football for the second time in your life? :D Italy was great, instead of playing their cautious, defensive football, they were attacking all the time, creating chances for them non stop, having 3 chances within 5-6 seconds once, hitting the woodwork a few times...England's performance beyond first half was poor, I agree with that. But in the first half both teams played well, creating chances for themselves and both teams almost scored within the first 5 minutes, that's something we haven't seen so far in EURO 2012. Such important games usually start very slowly and cautiously.

Um no. Some of the earliest memories I have are watching football. Italy did not play great, they played a poor England and couldn't score in 120 minutes of open play. They simply were not great.

Well, here you can see how different opinions can be.

I also thought that Italy played absolutely great soccer. They where very unlucky in front of the goal, they had the chance to score numerous times.
But i just found that the pace of the game and the combinations where very nice to watch.

England wasn't great, but i havn't seen them play well in ages. They have one of the strongest leagues in the world, but the national team is never really convincing.

They reminded me of chelsea at the champions leaque. Always the weaker team, but nobody managing to score against them. It must be the experienced defence :)

England never give any priority to their national side. The league is where the money is, big money. The league is great partly because of the talent from around the world. It's a long and intensive season, with no winter break (some countries have them, I think). Preparing for the national team is always an afterthought, which is a shame. Countries like Germany take their national side more seriously and consequently always do better. I've never seen England win a major tournament and I'm not likely to unless we take it seriously.

Spain showed once again how to play soccer the right way!

Very entertaining, fair and top notch footie.

Sad, that the Italians just couldn't keep up.

Congrats to Spain!

Spain made Italy look like a pub team...

It was like seeing a nice hot slice of pizza fall on the ground top first, all the good stuff is left behind and all you have is a hot piece of soggy dough
