I just found to that there are now 947 domain endings besides .com a bunch just opened up like .photos and .photography unfortunately stock.photos was already taken but I did land dollarphoto.club

I wonder why Fotolia did not buy that up?

Well, there's a sweeping, parochial statement.
You have just nixed the thousands of companies who have long registered an intention to buy .scot domains.

The domain extension is now a key part of the algorithm for determining search positions. Some of the new domain names are non-location specific, so will be harder to get ranked.

A .com would be fine for a photo agency operating globally or an American taxi service, but not for a German garage, English pub or Scottish shop.

If a search query has local intent, then that countries domain name extension is ranked higher on most occasions.

I think he is right, largely. And I do not believe that it is something which is going to significantly change over time, for two main reasons as follows:

1. Companies are known by and trade by their names, for the most part. Not by their domain name suffix. Anyone using the same name with a different suffix is, at best, an also-ran and, at worst, a potential impostor.

2. Domain names are becoming less important since search and navigation is increasingly combined in the interface. I cannot think of the last time I actually typed in a domain name.

There are a few exceptions. Eg the new Chinese character suffixes are clearly likely to be important to huge amount of the population. Also - short suffixes such as e.g. .tv and .im are great as re-directs and shorteners and for promotional uses, watermarks. There will clearly obviously be other examples which work well as re-directs.

Also - he said "nobody cares". That's a statement which is largely true at the moment. Even if everyone should really embrace the new suffixes. Good business for the people selling them though - if they can convince companies that they also need to buy their .com + 947 other suffixes.

Actually, if I'm doing a search to buy something, I usually search 'item UK', because the dot coms seem to have preference which seems to trump the Google's alleged geographic bias.

There is no alleged about it - it is fact. The search locale is primary, but only for searches with a dominant local interpretation.

User location - York
User query - cinema - should display local cinema listings - no one is going to travel to London!

user location - York
user query - prom dresses - This is not a local query as most people would buy from any shop in the UK online. UK domains should be dominant.

user location - York
user query - latest Nikon camera - not a local query - people would expect to pay shipping costs and buy from another country if it was cheaper.

Exactly as you have done Sue - if you want to buy local then prom dress shop in York or Nikon camera UK would do the trick...

^^ the fun thing is that because it presumably works on a radius basis, it's almost as likely to suggest a service (cinema etc) in Belfast (plane or boat trip) than in Glasgow (30 minute train ride) for me.

I agree that no company would by all the domain endings but  dollarphoto.club  I think that is a no brainer for a a website who is dollarphotoclub.com!

As for impersonating, I have no plan for that, there is no way I want to sell my photos for a dollar a pop!

I don't know what I will do with it I bought it for the fun of it, any suggestions what to do with it?

Also I think the 947 ending do matter as its the future of the internet, at some point Google and the rest will make those endings just as important if not more important as the internet evolves. As it can add new keyword search relevance to a already over saturated internet.

ah - in theory - and according to certain guidelines - 20 minutes is local. That's how far most people go to purchase something. Again though it depends on your IP location. Local to the West End of London is not Old Kent Road. However local from Rutherglen would be Hamilton??

Admittedly Goggle gets it wrong on many occasion - but it is a work in progress, being refined on a daily basis.

I mean no one is going to buy 20 variations of 947 domains, so I'll trust the .com is the 'official one'.

I'm guessing that in a lot of countries the country domain endings are very popular.  I know that is both true for Canada and Norway. In Norway people put most trust in the .no endings.

Exactly. This has changed over the last few years; increasingly so. I work in SEO - I can make a case for a business operating internationally and based in Norway having a .com., but not the vast majority of businesses who are looking for "local" custom..

The whole thing is a minefield....
