LOL  ;)

Having been on the Internet + email since about 1992, my brain exploded from information overload a looooooong time ago.

I opened a Facebook account under pressure from (real life) friends - but I just couldn't stand the increasing expectations from so many people to check it all the time, so I closed it.  I just don't know how people keep on top of all this stuff without going completely nuts.

I keep my facebook account because it seems some people - especially younger ones - can't help using it to communicate. But I turned off all applications and set email notification and I only log on when I receive a message.

Used this way it's not too bad, although there's nothing like the good old email.

Anyway, mobiles are even worse than fb.

Thanks for the tip - didn't know that.

I agree with you on mobiles... I have to have one on when I go out these days as I sometimes get emergency calls re my mother, for whom I have to advocate because she can no longer speak.  Would love to go back to the days when she was well and fully able, and I could take a long walk in the hills without having to worry about emergency calls.  I don't use my mobile for anything other than her needs.

Great, then I'm not the only one!

Once I won a mention in a design competition in France for designing a Faraday cage in which people are allowed to communicate without receiving mobile calls. Not sure it actually works - it would require a much tighter grid given the high frequency used by cellular networks - but I liked the concept because I really hate mobiles:

Hahaaaa!  That's great!  Congratulations for your honourable mention  :)

Perhaps, one day, when everyone's gone crazy enough and the 'experts' have put two and two together, we'll start to hear people on their mobiles saying "OK... I'm now entering a signal-free zone... I may not be contactable for several hours..."

It'll be the new bliss. ;)

Supercool....LOL, oops sorry :D
I'm very strict in managing my cell, I've switched off voicemail, if you wanna talk to me and I cant answer right now you can phone me later again, I'm not gonna call you back.
I do SMS a lot, sometimes just easier to quickly arrange something that way but my goodness it irks me when someone sends me a text asking how are you? Do you want me to send a looong sms explaining everything thats going on in my life or is it just a way of telling me that you're thinking of me but don't want to go to the trouble of contacting me directly and at least in this way you don't have to feel guilty that you didn't phone me??
I answer only if and when I want to, not because that particular person wants to talk to me right this minute.
I never answer while we're having our family dinner time and neither does my husband.
I never answer when I'm talking to someone else face to face, I think that's extremely rude and kinda defeats the purpose of me trying to teach my kids not to interrupt a conversation.
Although I have a FB account and it has been nice making contact with people from long ago it's just plain irritating receiving all kinds of cybergarbage like a kiss, bunch of roses, slap on the butt...or whatever. I'd much rather send a personal e-mail, make a personal phone call or have a coffee or a braai (bbq) with friends. This is just my opinion and the way I feel about all of this. Of course I don't use my cell for business any more. I am a doctor and my cell was indispensable when I was in practice. Maybe that's why I now have such an aversion to it, it ringing frequently meant that I had to get out of bed and rush to hospital. Now I do a completely different kind of doctoring and don't need to be in contact 24/7 so I can manage it much better. Phew...what a relief ;)

I recently got a smartphone and the phone is the thing I use less. The phone was useful for my mother's needs when I had to be contacted outside my office. If I am at my office or at home, I don't need someone call me on the cell phone. If I am at a meeting, I turn it off too - I find it unpolite, to say the least, when someone answers a call or even leaves the room because of a phone call.  Everything seems urgent these days. The only urgency to me is something that needs medical assistance. But being able to read the news and read email while I an stuck in traffic is the thing I like about the smartphone.

I am not really a Luddite but I will resist as long as I can without a cell phone . . . . . . please call me when I am home not when I am shopping!

I have a smartphone, too, and I really love it. I mostly use it to check emails while away from my computer and the google navigation...I love that feature. Hardly use it as a phone. And if I need to absolutely find something while I'm in my car, I will use the internet to find it, but on a regular basis, the screen is still too small to do any heavy internet surfing. Facebook? I use it at the bare minimum to keep in touch with family. Not one of those people who update my status every 5 minutes.

Not really obsessive with the cell, just use to keep tabs. Idouse Facebook to keep in touch with old friends since I used to move a lot and my friends are everywhere else but not my backyard. My new obsession is my iPad. Thati LOVE
