Title: Antarctica University
Post by: madelaide on January 09, 2011, 13:56
I came accross this site today:
University of Antarctica - The UANT / Antarctica Museum (http://antarcticaedu.com/museum.htm)

Hmm. The image of the "museum" is actually the Antarctic Centre, in New Zealand.  The address "is" in Antarctica, with a postal code THX 1138.  Hmm....  They even have graduation ceremony photos...

Links send us to the most varied places, some Antarctica related, others not.

Ok, nothing impedes people of making jokes, but wouldn't it be right to give some alert saying this is a fake site?

THX 1138 is a 1971 Science Fiction movie from George Lucas.
That in and of itself should have been a dead giveaway that that the site is meant as parody.

I know that, and that's what called my attention, besides being unlikely there is a university in Antarctica (I was looking for a museum about Antarctica, what doesn't need to be there).  But how many people ever heard about this movie?

That's kind of like the University of Tuktoyaktuk or "Tuk U" for short (Tuktoyaktuk is one of the most northern permanent towns in Canada).  They also have a website:
http://www.tuk-u.com/ (http://www.tuk-u.com/)
Of course there is no university there but I do have a "Tuk U" shirt that I bought when I was in Inuvik south of Tuk last year.

I saw this movie just a couple years ago.. very strange and great movie.. sort of surreal and thoughtful like a dream.

It doesn't look like it is too well seen though, it only has 16,000 votes on imdb
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066434/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066434/)

unlike for example requiem for a dream which has 200,000 votes
