Well he just asked a bunch of teenagers at the beach. I'm not surprised at the answers. BTW, one of the young women was from Australia. The group of Asian teens knew most of the answers, even if they were a bit unsure.

I'm asking because kids here learn this stuff in school, not just about Canada of course, but about every country in the world, plus much more about industry, culture, population and other stuff.
Yes, you are right. The group of Asian kids knew most of the answers. I'm also amazed that Australian girl didn't know the answers. It's not some small country like Lichtenstein or Andorra. Canada is a big country and a US neighbor.

Anyway, he could choose the dummiest people on the street. Maybe these examples are not an average persons.

I suspect that if you are talking about the average beach going teen, these answers are about on par. The surfers in southern California are legendary for their stupidity.

In any case, he probably did find a few people that knew the correct answers, but those would have been edited out due to lack of entertainment value.

Actually you will find that teenagers around the US will give the same answers. Saying our kids here that surf are stupid is just showing your ignorance.

It's not only about Canada and not only teenagers. I interact with many Americans on different social network. Most have no clue at what North African countries are or where or on which continent Brazil is.

I don't talk in general obviously, some I met knew as much as I do. Sometimes it's how interested you are at things that make the difference. I have seen a lot of Canadian living in countryside with the same issue at geography.

I guess every country has more or less of these people who know nothing about the world. But Americans are a good target because America is powerful, and weaker like to laugh at powerful. There is one more video. These guys really did their best to show how stupid people can be.
I would look at this more as a general issue on our planet, rather than just American problem.
School systems really vary from country to country, and I know that our school system learn us A LOT (too much) about other countries, so to me it looks unreal that someone says that Australia is Iran, or North Korea. But that doesn't make us smarter in the end. It's just bunch of data packed in our heads, and obviously this data doesn't help us to get out of the mud.

I was visiting a cousin in California this summer, and she was going on and on about how smart Canadians are - how our education system is so much better than what she received - and she pointed out "I know, because we finished 2 months before you did and every summer we came to visit and I had to go to school with you every day!"

These Q&A's with Americans are quite common up here and hugely entertaining, Rick Mercer (a political satirist) has his "Talking with Americans" routine, I could only find one crappy quality very old clip - not a word of what Mercer says says is truthful, but even the politicians agree with him.

Ric Mercer Talking with Americans

While I was looking for the above I found this for LISAFX -  is that your hubby at 38 seconds?  Man on Hold?

Everything you wanted to know about Canada ...

Off topic, but when I was looking for a clip from Mercer, I found this photo challenge on his website:  You may have to know who these politicians are to enjoy this, but some of the public's submissions are pretty great!  (Especially the Tony Clement ones)

Film makers produce these so that we can all gloat and feel superior.

It would be hard to find a group of people in any country who are so dim and out of touch.
