Title: Sales in China
Post by: Goofy on February 22, 2014, 11:31
Maybe it's just me but do some of you find that sales in China (Chinese buyers) are very low compared to the rest of the world?  Not sure if it is due to censorship that their government requires?

I talked to a friend in China about the business and he feels that it would be difficult to do for many reasons. He told me what happen to Google and how they were kicked out.

Any thoughts welcomed...

I can think of 2 reasons. Stock licensing is still fairly new in China, and the Asian market is dominated by Asia-based stock agencies (not Getty,SS,...). I'm an outsider though, but these are the impressions I get on the little research I've done.

If my Alamy pics are bought and put onto UK newspaper sites, you can bet your bottom dollar they'll be on at least 10, usually more Chinese sites within a very few hours, and many more within a few days, together with the article they were illustrating, so there must be a strong thieving culture in some parts of Chinese society.

Once there is a substantial amount of intellectual property created by its citizens that the government can tax, i bet we will begin to see some laws regarding intellectual property theft. I would guess within this decade that is a possibility.

China is a Communist country. People who expect that commercial enterprises will proceed there in the same way that they do in other places and that 'Marxism' is a meaningless label may be disappointed.
