Wow, and I always thought I was a left brain person, especially since I am right handed and told I make technically correct but boring images.  I saw her clockwise and no amount of refocusing, squinting or trying could get her to change direction.

Seen this on the SS forum too but didn't reply over there.

When i open it i see it turning anti clockwise... but concentrating on it i can change it to turn clockwise.... and even back to anti clockwise... does that make me a weirdo.?.

Patrick.

I think it makes you normal?  I can't for the life of me, get it to go counter-clockwise.

I'm glad someone can make it go the other way. I wondered if it was a hoax.

heheh

Ant-clockwise when I opened the link and then she turned around and only went clockwise (lefthanded)

Amazing!

I see her going clockwise and, try as I might, I can't see her going the other way.

I would guess ... if the the theory is correct ... that most people on this forum would see her going clockwise, being as we're visual and creative (I hope).

Anyone know of a forum for accountants where we can post this, and see what they see.   ;D

Funny thing is that I have been in the IT industry for over 20 years, yet I see her going clockwise (and only clockwise).  I have asked about a dozen other IS staff to look at it with the following results:

4 men see her only going clockwise;
3 women see her initially going clockwise, but then changing direction every now and then;
2 men see her initially going clockwise, but then changing direction every now and then.

Out of the group I polled, nobody only sees her only going counter-clockwise.

One question that came out of it was "what is the definition of clockwise/counter-clockwise?"  In my poll, we all determined that we would be looking down on her to determine the circular direction.  But others might determine direction by looking upwards towards her.

I did the same thing. I think this is a hoax. (mainly because I can't see her moving counter-clockwise). If you asked her if she is moving left or right, it would be right. Same if you look at here from a downward angle as the image forces you do to since you can see the top of her head.

Can anyone see her actually moving counter-clockwise?

I haven't check this current link, but it mus the same I was sent the other day.  I can see her turning in both directions, mostly clockwise, but eventually counterclockwise. I didn't find a way to guarantee I see her turning counterclockwise, even doing math like I was told (tried square roots).

Regards,
Adelaide

Yes, I've now seen her going anticlockwise. It took a while, but suddenly she switched and I couldn't get her to go back to the way I first saw her.

I found it helps switch direction if you cover up the shadow/reflection of her feet.

As for the right/left brain thing ... I'm suspicious of that. I showed it to my wife (who is a very much more organised and process-oriented person than me) and she saw it going clockwise too. I think most people see it going clockwise because of the shadow/reflection of one of her feet that appears and disappears. It makes more sense for that to happen when she's going clockwise.

I can make it go clockwise, anti-clockwise or swing from left to right and back again.  I takes me quite a bit of concentration to make it happens.  Try looking to your right to the edge of the page and look at the image out of the corner of your left eye and then the opposite with the other eye and she should change directions.  Or look at the feet and imagine that they are going in the other direction and then they should suddenly change.

I see her turning clockwise when I first look but after a while I can get her to switch back and forth.  I find moving my eyes in the opposite direction and blinking gets her to switch.

I know what it is, and it's nothing to do with right/left brain.

In the article it says that most people see her going anticlockwise. But most people I've shown it to, and on this forum, see her going clockwise at first.

But, consider that this is an Aussie paper and it suddenly becomes clear.

People in the southern hemisphere see her going anticlockwise, and people in the northern hemisphere see her going clockwise.

It's exactly the same as the way water rotates as it goes down the plughole, innit?

That works, but only until I move my head back. I really don't think it reflects on whether you're right or left brained.

i was conviced people just had their clockwise - anti-clockwise mixed up until I saw her going both ways.

the tip about looking at the corner of the screen (in addition to blinking the eyes) helped :)

that thing is bonkers though, i really wonder how it works.  When it goes clockwise her right arm and leg are sticking out.  when it is going anti-clockwise her left leg and arm are sticking out.???

Since there is no such thing as left or right brained, I wouldn't get too concerned about it.  :) The whole concept is nothing but a popular myth based on a flawed study. When the study was repeated to verify the data, the results were completely reversed.

This won't stop people from believing in astrology, the full Moon effect or other popular myths, but at least everyone here can know that they are using all of their brains.  ;)

ps I saw it counter-clockwise first, until I concentrated, and changed it. It's possible to make it turn either direction with practice. Nifty optical illusion. Human perception is an amazing area.

Something about taking a course in human perception and having the professor use Andreas Feininger writings and photos, as some examples, always stuck with me. If you stick your nose up close to a wide angle photo and can focus, it's not distorted at all.

I can see clockwise and anti clockwise. It appears that the loop of the flash has a change in direction every some many minutes to confuse everyone into thinking one way or another.  ;D

I have tried and tried and tried. And I feel dumb. I can't see her spinning clockwise.

heee.... heeee......

THE ANSWER is about SHIFT!

Try to look away to the left and read/ concentrate on words/instructions whilst out of the side of your eyes make it turn the other way whilst still focusing on words to left, once you have done this shift your attention back to the figure nd Voila!

Works for me  :P

Try it and let me know how you get on  ;D

I see her spinning both ways.

When she is spinning clockwise her left foot is on the ground, when spinning anti-clockwise her right foot is on the ground.

Or am I seeing things?

I can't seem to get it to turn anti clockwise. I even tried repeatedly hitting the left side of my head, just in case that side of my brain had gone to sleep, but that didn't do it either.

I see her spinning clockwise, but if I concentrate, I can switch to anti-clockwise... for a short while and then, suddenly, she turns clockwise again.

Well, as a cartesian, I thought I would better fit in the anti-clockwise category... but as a photographer?

Completely useless I guess, but interesting  ;)
