Step 3, how do I select both the new ellipse and the copy of it? It seems difficult because they are right on top of each other.

When I try to intersect, it says 'The filer produced no results. Please select two overlapping paths.'

I think you can right click..and then there is option select object under..something like that..

or you can just select both thing..and hold the shift and select the top..then it will deselect the top..so only the below object is selected.

for filled or non filled object..look for the panel on top..there is one for color and one for border or shape..the border u can chooose none..then it is non filled.
