I was finally able to receive payment from Pixmac this week, and this morning received the PayPal payment which had a $2.37 fee deducted from the $53 I was owed.

The amount doesn't match the 2.9% + 30 cents a transaction for debit cards or the outside the US fees (.5% to 2% for bank account funded amounts and 3.4% to 3.9% for debit/credit card funded). The deduction is 4.47% of the total.

Is this how payments from Pixmac typically are? I think if there are fees they should pay them, but as this is a first and last transaction for me (I'm trying to get my portfolio onto Pond5 as review time allows), I'll just take the loss and be done with them if it's always this way.

- pixmac
- signelements
- featurepics
- allyoucanstock (did)

there are 3 more agencies I am in that do this...

I last received a payment from them in August 2012 for $53. I just checked PayPal and there is a $2.63 fee. I hadn't noticed before. No idea what it is for...

Yes, $2.37 fee deducted from the $53 but I think  deduction comes from PP because pixmac sent 53. Who knows?

I think if they don't have mass pay you get stuck with the fees.  I paid a fee from Featurepics on my one and only cashout and there used to be a fee with Zymmetrical also.

Does Pond5 have fees?  There have been a few "who should I upload to - Pixmac or Pond5" questions lately.

If it's everyone getting stuck with the fee, then so be it, but not one of the other agencies I receive payments from makes a deduction from my balance for fees.

Not one.

It is an agency cost to process and send payments, not something the contributor should be covering - otherwise it's just one more way to try and increase their take from the gross.

Thanks for feedback, and I guess I have one more item to add to the list of things a fair trade agency should do/not do...

I just dug up the Featurepics amount I paid but it doesn't actually say what the fee is for.  (Note though that we seem to get more Paypal fees in Canada than you do in the US).

Amount received:
 $56.23 USD
Fee amount:
 -$1.93 USD
Net amount:
 $54.30 USD

I get my Pixmac payments through Moneybookers and haven't had any deductions.

We've been discussing that shortly with Lucy a few moments ago and the fees are strange.

When I was reading the hidden pages about various PP fees within the PP universe I can remember there was some cross-border fee. Something that's applied for transfers between some territories like EU<>US or so. But honestly, I'm guessing. PayPal has several types of fees, applied in various situations.

My fee was $7.34 on a $160 payment.

They are obviously using a different method of payment than other sites like Dreamstime, Fotolia and Shutterstock as those sites don't have fees.

unless there is some kind of special treatment for Czech Republic ;D

signelements based in the UK (fee also)
featurepics based in the USA (fee also)

It doesn't look like they are using "mass pay" or they would automatically pay the fees.

Pixmart is correct. With mass payments, the sender pays the fees. If not then its you who pays the fees. And depending on currency and cross border payments, you pay different fees. It also depends on the percentage you are on, which depend on your payment volume coming into your PP account. And all countries have different fees. You cant compare US PP accounts with UK PP accounts, etc.

I am unhappy about these fees, And I am not sure whether I am comfortable uploading to a site that doesn't see this as a problem that they can put right.

Quite a few of the smaller agencies pass the PP fee to the contributor, while most of the larger agencies cover the fees for us. It is similar with Payoneer. Istock covers the fee, but Veer and others don't. The cost of doing business, I guess.

As I noted above, this is a one-time thing as I expect to be paid by Pond5 in the future. However, the attitude that it has nothing to do with the agency bothers me.

iStock isn't in the US and I never paid any "cross border fees" to receive my USD payments from them. DT I think pays me via a US subsidiary even though they are based in Romania, so no fees there. PhotoDune is in Australia, but I don't pay any fees there either.

At a bare minimum, an agency that is going to pay you less than the full amount if you live anywhere but their home country (and I expect even there you might pay fees to convert from USD to the local currency if they are nominally paying contributors in USD) needs to spell that out up front so that contributors can decide if they want to take that cut.

It is not OK to just brush this off as a PayPal problem. If other agencies that are not in the US can manage to pay the full amount, why is that not standard across the board?

Massive +1

I always get paid in full, from all agencies, and non of them are in my own country, and there are no fees, not even cross border fees.

Its a choice they make, and then brush it off as a paypal issue.

The only times I get hit with fees are at sites that don't pay in US Dollars. Yay is Euros and SignElements is Pounds; I get hit with conversion fees at both.  Somehow all the others manage to pay me the full amount I earn, I assume via Mass Pay.

sorry but that is not correct

- YAY doesn't have any fee
- MP doesn't have any fee (pay in EUR)

I don't believe he said it properly.  I believe that (like me) he is paid the full amount in the currency it is due, but after he receives the payment he pays a conversion fee when he converts to his local currency.   This post is about the fee for mass pay payments that most of the agencies assume - that it appears Pixmac (and Featurepics in my Canadian case) do not pay.

I know it isn't a perfect solution, and I hope PM pursues this with Paypal and gets on board with Mass Pay.  But in the meantime, anyone with a moneybookers account might consider getting their Pmac payment through them.  As I mentioned above, I have not been charged a fee when collecting through Moneybookers.

Thanks for the correction. As I said, the only fees I've had are conversion fees from other currencies to dollars.  That was the case with Yay, since I didn't see any value in having a balance in Euros.
