Shutterstock.com / Should I bother - continued (frustrated)
« on: March 09, 2007, 14:21 »
Thanks again for your advice.
So I signed up and uploaded 10 of my better selling ones or highly rated ones from other sites.  I kept it diverse - kids to grandmother-age (as requested in the forums),  racially divers (an African-American, several Hispanics, a Filipina), a still-life (wedding themed, sells well on Fotolia and iStock) - and, guess what - every single one got rejected.  Some without any explanation, just rejected.  None mentioned noise so I assume that wasn't the issue.
Unfortunately they just list the ID number and I can't find those on the website anymore so I don't even know which one of my pics was rejected for faulty white balance (or whatever) and which were rejected just because.  I would understand that they reject some, but all of them???

So now what?  Is that just a rite of passage they put everybody through the first time around or is it me?

Here are some of the rejects, please let me know what you think!

Site Related / How do I post pictures

Please help!

Thanks so much,

Thanks, guys.  I signed up and will get started asap.  Any words of wisdoms as to what they accept and don't accept (the unwritten "do's and don'ts), e.g. Fotolia hasn't accepted any of my landscapes in ages (overabundant category) so I don't submit them anymore - but I had to learn it the hard way.
I know better than to submit sunsets and my front yard flower pictures  ;) - but is there anything on the "unofficial" dont-list that isn't mentioned on their webpage?

Thanks for your help.  This is a terrific forum for microstock photographers!!

yeah, your right, we are suppliers - tellingly there is no "supplier service" department.  I guess you might argue that support fills that function but my point was: support I am not getting but attitude I am getting a lot.  Well, that's what's happening in an industry where supplier power is very limited   :(.

It might seem contra-intuitive to ask you guys whether I should go out and increase competition for you but I'll do it anyway  ;)

I am on Dreamstime (early favorite, fallen seriously out of favor), Fotolia (best $$ performer overall, very slow recently), IStock (smallest portfolio, best $/uploaded pix ratio), Bigstock (not worth my while) and as of recent Panthermedia (so far no sales and only a handful views) - should I add Shutterstock?
A lot of people here say its there best performer in terms of $ but the $0.25 per dld has so far kept me from going there.  So, what do you think - is it worth my while uploading and categorizing all over again?

Thanks for the input.

Now you got me started....
I am so annoyed with those guys I have pretty much stopped uploading.  They are extremely inconsistent which is extremly annoying.  I got pictures rejected for model release issues that used the same model release as many others which are uploaded and selling.  One picture gets rejected another in the same batch of the same model (mostly my kid) get's accepted.

Replies by support are slow and inconsistent as well.  One example: one person in support told me to upload a reworked model release under a new but similar name and they would switch it out another person told me to email them the new and improved model releases and they would switch it out.  Now what am I suppposed to do?   I suspect that whatever I do the job won't get done.

Also I am kind of sick of their customer service in general. The prevailing notion seems to be: "we are working sooo terribly hard and we won't take any crap (or suggestions) from you pesky photographers."  Well, hello, I am working hard too and don't want to apologize every time I ask a question or point out a possible improvement.  When I posted something along to this effect on the Forum recently the post was removed within hours for some bogus reason.

Okay, done venting now - its still bugs me, though.

Thanks for listening  ;)

Adobe Stock / Totally crashing on Fotolia
« on: March 05, 2007, 23:43 »
Since February I am having the hardest time with Fotolia.  I used to sell there steadily if not spectacularly a couple or three pics a day making my way up to just under 200 pics sold and then - nothing.  A week can go by without a sale.  Then they trickle in for a few days, onesies and twosies if I am lucky and then nothing again.
Anybody else sharing that experience?  What is going on?  I haven't been uploading much recently because I a) don't have that much new stuff right now and b) I am a bit disenchanted - but that shouldn't impact sales, right? -  ??? and  :'(

Thanks for your input,

Tina

Bigstock.com / Re: BigStock Sales
« on: February 28, 2007, 00:27 »
for me BigStock sucks.  I have 75 pics or so uploaded and I see the occassional sale.  I am at a whooping $21.50 ever since I started back in July or so.  Haven't uploaded anyhting in a while.  If it picks up I might upload some more stuff but right now my time is better spend on other sites.

General Stock Discussion / German microstock site
« on: February 27, 2007, 14:19 »
Does anybody have any experience with German microstock sites?  Which one do you recommend and which ones aren't worth the effort.
Generally they seem to pay more per download than the US/UK/CA sites but there also seems much less traffic.  Is it worth it to go ahead and translate all my keywords  (I am German so it won't suck too badly - but still, its a lot of work).

thanks for your input,

Tina

I am not a great fan of San Jose either but it was rated the safest city with 500,000+ people in the nation in 2006 (http://www.morganquitno.com/cit05pop.htm#500,000+) so you needn't be too concerend about getting kidnapped :-)
I currently work in downtown San Jose and like to shoot the tall buildings and especially the reflections - makes for cool abstracts - certainly nothing, though, that screams "San Jose" to the viewer of your pics.
I second the Lick Observatory recommendation - its a bit of a drive but well worth it.

If you want to venture further:  Santa Cruz, especially the Boardwalk if you are interested in shooting people having fun, then take a drive up 101 to Pescadero - very scenic drive along the famous California coast line and cute little town.  Cross back to 280 on either 84 or 92 (84 looks like a short cut but really isn't, its a long drive on windy roads).  If you make it to Half Moon Bay and there are strong winds make sure to check out the surfers at Maverick.
Finally 280 will take you back down to San Jose - that's a days worth of photo shooting.
One work of caution about Berkeley - I love the place but have never encountered such hostility towards photographers before.  Just raising your camera to your eyes may be enough for people to start chewing you out and demanding that you stop (I am risking being politically incorrect but I have to say the political correctness has gone to far in Berkeley).  Oakland was quite the opposite, people were totally accomodating and had no problem with me taking pics of their kids (I asked and I am a woman which helps with taking pics of kids).

Anyway, hope that helps and have fun.

Tina
