Cameras / Lenses / Re: dust inside the lens
« on: January 02, 2013, 11:42 »
Sorry about not answering right away, we are on a road trip and don't always have reliable internet.
Anyway, I see the issue only with that lens and it is pretty clear from looking at it that the problem is right at the front of the lens, although it is hard to tell where exactly.  It could well be a fungus, never thought about that but the appearance of the "cloudy spots" might support this. I'll see whether I can open the lens and clean it, if I damage it so be it, it is pretty much useless at it is.
Thanks for the link to the article, I'll check that out as well.

Cameras / Lenses / dust inside the lens
« on: December 28, 2012, 20:09 »
Hi all:
I have a very annoying issue with my Tamron lens (AF 28-300 mm) it appears that somehow dust or dirty got into the lens and has accumulated smack in the middle at the front part of the lens giving me nasty cloudy spots on every picture.  Of course, I notice this on a road trip where I only brought this lens.
Any ideas how/why this could have been happening and more importantly, whether there is anything I could do about it?
Thanks so much for any help and advice.

Hi everybody:

long time no speak ...
Anyway, I am planning a trip to Melbourne in late Feb early March and have some time on my hand that I could use for photography.  I was wondering whether anybody knew of any courses, classes, meet-ups.  I am interested in anything for a 1-day workshop to informal gatherings for a photo walk.

I would really appreciate and ideas and suggestions you might have.
Thanks,
Tina

Off Topic / Re: Sometimes the snow comes down in June

it rained in California yesterday - first time in my 10 years here that we had rain in June.  Bad year for summers, it semms.

My little boy just started sports and it looks like I am going to be forced into taking sports related pictures if I want to use my camera during the weekend at all ...

As products go, I have heard that people (portait photographers) do well selling decks of playing cards.  I have made costers myself with some success (never really pushed it so it is hard to say).  Not sure whether these are new ideas - maybe I am getting old, too.  :(

I want to send a couple of links to my portfolios to somebody but somehow can't figure out how to do this for shutterstock, istock, and fotolia.  :-[
I looked around on the site and searched this forum but nada.
Any advice?

Thanks!

Off Topic / Camera for my kid
« on: February 03, 2009, 02:28 »
My 4 year-old wants my camera and he sure can't have it.  So I decided to get him his own, kid-friendly camera but so far I haven't seen anything I like.
It should have more than the 2 megapix that seem to be standard for kids.  It also doesn't have to have any Disney characters printed on it and certainly Hannah Montana is not required.  Since he bangs it into everything all the time I would prefer a camera that has a smallish zoom lense, that is one that doesn't extend too far out and it should be light.  Oh, and I don't want to spend a lot of money as he will bang it into everything ...

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Tina

Shutterstock.com / Re: How did SS perform for you this month?

One word: pathetic!
IS and Dreamstime are picking up the slack but SS has been very disappointing.  Sigh

Off Topic / Re: Selling rights to a picture
« on: January 11, 2009, 02:10 »
hmm - interesting point.  I never even thought about writing an agreement (yikes!)  I have a bunch sitting somewhere on a computer but where, oh where.
Btw, there are no people on the picture.
Thanks for the input so far!

Off Topic / Selling rights to a picture
« on: January 09, 2009, 23:35 »
Somebody wants to buy the rights to one of my pictures.  It's not one I have on any microstock or is otherwise making me any money.  I like it but I don't love it.
I have absolutely no idea what I should ask!
Any and all experience and datapoints would be helpful.

Thanks

Off Topic / Palm Springs Photo Festival
« on: December 18, 2008, 13:19 »
I am toying with the idea to invest part of this years (meager) microstock earning to attend this festival.  Has anybody any experience with it?  Is it worth it, especially the workshops?
Thanks for your input!

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia sales? how have yours been lately?
« on: December 12, 2008, 13:17 »
Good sales in November, a bit slower now.  As mentioned before most sales are in Germany and for me also in the Asian markets (China, Japan and India as far as I can tell from the names).  Also some extend licenses - very nice!
They also accepted almost everything I uploaded the last few weeks.  I am liking it more and more.

Off Topic / Really good lab
« on: November 24, 2008, 16:19 »
I have a question for all of you living in the SF Bay Area.  For a photo competition (TPOTY) I entered I need to now submit actual prints of the 4 pictures I sent in (never thought it would come to that ;-)
I don't have all that much time so I'd like to have them printed where I live (it is also a bit of a control thing).  Does anybody have a suggestion for a really good lab to have these prints made from digital.

Thanks

Dreamstime.com / Re: Whats up with DT?
« on: November 20, 2008, 12:33 »
Initially I wasn't a great fan of DT.  I had all those rejections because of MRs that they had previously accepted and my questioning that in the forum led to my posts getting deleted (okay, right, they can do that, they have the legal right, but should they?  I think not).  Anyways, I just got 44/44 accepted and I am starting to like them more and more ;-)

General Stock Discussion / Re: Forums in microstock sites
« on: September 12, 2008, 18:52 »
I haven't checked DT in a while.  I managed a couple of times to get whatever moderate criticism I had removed faster than I could type it.  If they can't stand a tiny weeny bit of criticism I have no interest in that cleaned up version of reality presented there.

SS I check, mainly because the links to the most active ones are right there so it is tempting.  I actually like to read the Everything goes category - gives me a much better feel for the sentiments out there about certain controversial topics (e.g. political or religious) as going to political or religious forums where people of one particular believe system tend to aggregate and bash the poor guy/gal who happens by and voices a dissenting opinion.   That won't happen much anymore, though, as we were all reminded a short while ago not to be nasty and opinionated and keep it nice and civil and not say things that others might find offensive by any stretch of imagination.  It's going to get much more boring - but on the bright side: I won't be distracted by the latest post about Sarah P. and might finally finish that 100 page presentation for my client.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Tear Sheets - Post your finds here

Finally found one of mine on the website of a German parenting magazin.  It shows my son looking pouty and so - approriately - it's used as an illustration for an article about the terrible twos.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Age as a keyword?
« on: September 02, 2008, 18:53 »
I think it was Photoshelter's School of Stock (but I am not sure) that specifically advised to putting the age in the keywords.  I do it with kids as precisely as possible (although it might be misleading even there, some 4 year olds look like they are 6, other more like 3) and for adults I write twenty, 20, 20s, twentysomething or 40, 40s, fortyish - although at least Shutterstock is not happy with the last option and constantly throws it back as a typo.

Thanks.  I sent them an email - I hope they fix it soon.  Makes me nervous.  Not that it is all that much, but I earned it - ever cent of it!

Shutterstock.com / Sales disappeared
« on: August 28, 2008, 14:32 »
I just refreshed my shutterstock account page and in front on my very eyes all sales after August 18 disappeared (including compensation for the referals).  Big fat zeros for all days starting August 19.  I closed the tab, opened a new one, still the same.  Pictures I uploaded are still there, just the money is gone.  Anybody else experiencing the same?

General Stock Discussion / Keywords
« on: August 05, 2008, 23:37 »
I just looked at SS top 100 keyword searches - something I should have done more frequently as it turns out - and was surprised to find a large number of Spanish search terms among the top ones, among them corazones (#1), flores (#8), manos (#9),  rosa (#10) past week, similar positions over the past month.
I am happy to keyword in Spanish, it will help with my efforts to study the language but I am still confused, will the search term "flores" find my flowers or do I have to actually add the keyword "flores" (as those pictures I spot-checked did).  If not, I really wish I would have know earlier.
What do you say?

Thanks,

Tina

Off Topic / Re: A month in Mumbai
« on: July 07, 2008, 07:21 »
I spent 4 weeks in Kerala earlier this year with my husband and 3 1/2 year old son.  None of us was sick for a minute, the food was delicious, people super-friendly, open and willing to accomodate us with all our questions.  They let us partake in there religious ceremonies, and shared their experiences openly.
Was it like living back home in Sunnyvale?  Well no, that's the point it's different.  If I wanted more of the same Safeway-Target-Starbucks-Bed Bath & Beyond boredom I would drive a mile to Cupertino.
As a European expat living in the US it always irks me to see how narrow-minded people (mostly Americans, sorry to say that but it is true) are when it comes to different ways of doing things, living ones life etc.  Not all is great back home, really, Europeans just can't believe how carelessly Americans are squandering energy, how huge their houses and cars are and that being "green" means nothing more than putting ones cans in the correct waste container.
Did I like the fact that Indians streets were littered with waste.  No, of course not and that will change, as people learn the slow and hard way that plastic does not biodegrade like banana peels.  Do I like to breath exhaust fumes at a vista point somewhere in the USbecause the driver is too lazy to turn the engine off while looking, eating a sandwich, or having a nap?  Even less - will they ever learn?

Okay - waiting for the oiutrage!  Tina

Panthermedia.net / Re: First sale at Panthermedia
« on: June 12, 2008, 06:14 »
Occasionally.  Just last week I had two in a row - a first with my rather small portfolio of just over 100 pictures.
I have been going from keywording in German to keywording in English but my "English" pics get few views.  I am going back to keywording in German for a bit to see whether that helps.  I had the impression that the translation of English keywords into German is, well, not so great and German buyers using German keywords get better results with pics that were keyworded originally in German.  No ides though whether that's reality or just my imagination.  ???
Any opinios?

I found a curious German word Heimweh, it should be das Heimweh ?

yes, right and here is another rule:  in a composite noun like this (Heim + Weh) the article is determined by the second noun (das Weh = hurt, sickness) .  In this case it is "das Heim" as well, but that it doesn't determine the article.Another example "der Bilderrahmen" = the pictureframe, = "das Bild" and "der Rahmen".
I am kind of stuck on grammar right now, it seems .  I am studing  Spanish and spent three weeks with a girlfriend who was studying English grammar to be an English teacher - must have rubbed of.

No, you aren't doomed.  It can be done and I know people who did it  :)  Didn't want to scare you either, just prepare you that - at times - you might wish you had choose to study, say quantum mechanics or neuroscience  ;D
There are actually some rules concerning the articles.  Here are the two I remember off-hand:
plurals are always "die" regardless of what the singular is, e.g. "der Hund", "die Hunde"
all (well, there might be exceptions but not many) words ending on -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft are female.  These are often abstract nouns such as Gesellschaft (society), Krankheit (sickness), Ordnung (order), etc (strange selection, I admit it).

Frohes lernen!
