New Sites - General / Re: flattr

I think this doesn't concern stock photography. Looks like a social network donation system where you can donate to someone offering something for free - like freeware fonts, flickr photos etc. If someone uses the stuff you offer for free they send something back.

Magnum Photos entire archive of prints - billed as the most valuable collection in the history of photography - has been sold to an investment firm run by the boss of computer giant Dell.

Nearly 200,000 original press prints of images captured by photo legends such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa and Elliott Erwitt have been sold to MSD Capital, a private investment firm run by Michael S Dell, chairman and CEO of Dell Inc.

The Magnum Archive Collection - which dates from the 1930s - documents major world events such as the D-Day landings.

And it includes portraits of world leaders and Hollywood stars such as Marilyn Monroe.

The photos will be 'preserved and catalogued' at the Harry Ransom Center, a museum based at the University of Texas.

The photographers will retain copyright and the licensing rights to all images in the Collection, according to a statement released to Amateur Photographer.

Details of the deal have not been disclosed.

About the prices, i think they should not be more expensive than the other micro agencies.

For it to be successful, prices would have to be dramatically lower than the other micro agencies.

I agree that as a new product it would have to be cheaper to compete with the established agencies but if we do that we should soon expect lower prices at all the sites. Selling a little more expensive or at the same price we wouldn't undervalue our images further.

Alias is right proof of ownership is going to be hard without paying someone to take care of legal issues. About quality control though i think that the same way you can find good images through the mass of  photos on flickr you could find through this site too.

104
I've given this some thought in the past and i think this could only work like a free flickr site with an add to cart option. It wouldn't possible to review all the files without paying reviewers so everybody can upload what they want with only an automatic plugin checking for excessive purple fringe, acceptable image size and resolution etc. As for a way to sort good files from bad files further every buyer could have the option to rate and comment on the file he bought.

About the prices, i think they should not be more expensive than the other micro agencies.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Yuri's Site gone to darkside?
« on: November 12, 2009, 19:58 »
I used the site a couple of days ago and didn't worry too much about the message - i thought it was my antivirus getting confused as it does sometimes with java, iframes etc. I closed the pop-up warning windows on each page and had no problems getting my work done.

Always wanted to say thanks to Yuri for offering this application, i use it all the time, so i guess it's my chance to do so.

Thank you Yuri!

I don't know if this has been answered yet in the forum - but does anyone know what goes on with the main portfolio view? When i find one of my images in search and click on my username i cannot see the rest of my portofolio anywhere, just a notice that i haven't published any portofolios yet

Shutterstock.com / Re: rejections vs earnings
« on: June 20, 2009, 08:44 »
What i'm saying might apply better to the big-6. I understand that new sites or low earners accept more but are unable to sell as much in volume as the established sites. Let's not take any of that into consideration, it doesn't matter how much they sell, at what price, subscription etc. If from a port of 500 you got 30% accepted at FT, 50% at IS, 60% at DT or SS it would be interesting to see how much it affects sales for this specific port. Each site was given the same amount of images, what they accept or reject, how they sell, market and price the images is not to be taken into consideration.

Example (port of 500 new images submitted last year to these agencies)
FT - Accepted 150 - Profit in the period of the next year: 150$
123RF - Accepted 300 - Profit in the period of the next year: 150$
DT - Accepted 300 - Profit in the period of the next year: 250$

Maybe we could have a poll to see what is our rejection rate vs earnings at each site.

If for example from a port of 500 images SS accepted 300 and FT 150 images, you probably made more money at SS last year.

If we all voted  and if something like this is easy to setup i think we would have some interesting results and i think it would bring the rejection rate down on some snobby sites!

Some images that got accepted yesterday are not showing anywhere sorted by "most popular", i checked my port twice. I can see them though when i choose newest first.  ???

Site Related / Re: Adorama discounts for Microstockgroup members
« on: November 07, 2008, 06:34 »
Thanks Leaf!

Just a quick question for Helen.

What happens with people ordering from Greece, are we allowed to order from the international site or do we have to  order from adorama.gr?  I cannot find Greece in the drop down menu in the international site. The reason i'm asking is that i'm looking at a lens and there is a 200$ difference in the price.

General Macrostock / Photoshelter collection is closing
« on: September 11, 2008, 11:48 »
http://psc.photoshelter.com/about/index/news/20080911

Today, we regret to announce our plans to close The PhotoShelter Collection, our stock photography marketplace, effective October 10, 2008.

Going forward, PhotoShelter will focus our energy and resources on enhancing the PhotoShelter Personal Archive our original product that today provides thousands of photographers worldwide with bulletproof backup storage and robust ecommerce capabilities for managing image sales online. We will continue our commitment to developing new ways to use technology to advance the art and business of photography.

Just one year ago, we started the PhotoShelter Collection with a mission to change the image marketplace for good. Our objective was to provide an unprecedented selection of fresh, diverse, and authentic imagery culled from a global community of thousands of photographers, while * industry standards by treating our contributing artists fairly. Rather quickly, we built a unique position in the industry, fueled by integrity and a true passion for photography.

The PhotoShelter Collection became a haven where photographers could find a better deal based on our 70/30 revenue split, and access to professional insights directly from world class image buyers. Buyers welcomed the Collection as a much needed alternative - whether they liked the access to content never before seen, or simply because they appreciated our approach to better treatment for photographers.

Our unique approach, however, was insufficient to change buyer behavior on a grand scale and generate revenues quickly enough to satisfy our goals for this product line. Hence, our decision is to close the Collection.

We want to express our deepest gratitude to our contributors and buyers - for your participation and support of our company, our community, and our mission. It has been an honor and a pleasure to work with you.

As for the future of PhotoShelter, our team will refocus heavily on supporting our original product, the PhotoShelter Personal Archive. We'll continue adding new features that help individual photographers use our technology to market and sell images directly to their own clients. We'll also be hard at work developing new innovations that make best use of our industry knowledge and world class technology team. Our financial position remains solid and we look forward to working with the photography community for years to come.

More details can be found in a personal statement on CEO Allen Murabayashi's blog "A Picture's Worth" and FAQs posted at photoshelter.com.

If i'm not mistaken this font is either Arial or Helvetica. These fonts can be used in your designs as they are distributed for free with windows and are the default fonts used in the internet together with Verdana, Georgia etc. Just tell them the font is public domain, this should solve the problem.

One thing to note in this: the person cited in the article, Rebekka Guleifsdttir, is Flickr's Lise Gagne - an article in the Wall Street Journal even referred to her as "the web's top photographer". Personally, I take exception to this, and view much of her Flickr fame to be the result of her being young, attractive, and quite willing to publish provocative self-portraits in a predominantly male environment. Her work can be good at times, but not that good - there are very many other Flickrites who are much, much better. Give yourself a two minute break from things and click here to see her work.

I had only seen her stock stuff 'till now - i was pleasantly surprised by looking at her art photos. Some of those photos are very good and a few seem to be inspired directly by Francesca Woodman who also was "young, attractive, and quite willing to publish provocative self-portraits", there's nothing wrong with that. When i say inspired i don't mean it in a bad way - meaning influenced by not copied.

Will the autofocus work with these lenses on a Nikon? I think it's useful for macro. Also there's a nice page page on flickr about macro lenses where people have posted examples of each lens but i just can't find it right now.

I have in camera sharpening turned completely off and then just before exporting my final jpg from the raw i apply some unsharp mask at photoshop. Usually the sharpening amount doesn't exceed 100, radius no more than 1 pixel and no threshold at all. Hope this helps.

New Sites - General / Re: Has anyone tried Photoshelter
« on: October 04, 2007, 15:21 »
thanks jsnover for your anwser.

i was thinking of uploading some stuff on midstock sites as well - like mostphotos and l.oliver and the same question comes up on what to upload there as well. I did a very specific search on both istock and l.o. The search for "agaric amanita" returned 16 results on both sites. None of the images found were on both sites.

i hope we don't need a third portofolio for midstock!

 :)

Hi, been reading the forums for a while but this is my first post.

I have a question, what do you guys think - i have a different portofolio for alamy and the micros. Which of these two portofolios you think is better to upload to photoshelter? Should i upload my micro or macro images to them?

Thanks in advance
