Adobe Stock / Re: Breaking the rule
« on: May 28, 2008, 19:55 »
My impression: Fotolia slows down (sales), more rejections - mostly for "type of photograph".  ???  ?!

123RF: decent review times, sales steadily growing. They must be doing something right  :)

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Uploads disappearing...
« on: May 17, 2008, 03:02 »
OK, false alarm. Eleven of the uploaded images showed up directly in the "Active/Pending" list, but four have been stuck as "Unfinished", which I have discovered only after clicking on the "Upload" button. So, I have finished up whatever needed finishing - but it is confusing... ???

iStockPhoto.com / Uploads disappearing...
« on: May 17, 2008, 01:20 »
...at IStock.
One week ago I uploaded 15 images. My uploader says 15 images uploaded OK, IS says received 15 images. All show up in the "Active/Pending Images" queue. All is OK with the world.

This week, I uploaded anpther 15 pics. The uploader says: 15 images uploaded successfully. IS says: 15 images uploaded. But...in the "Active/Pending images" I only see 11 new images. Also, Total Uploads count shows the number of all images I uploaded, minus the "disappeared" pics. So - are they gone for good ?

Did this happen to anyone else ?  I do not mind uploading these pics again - but what bugs me, is that my upload limit is used up. If this continues, I will be using the upload limit just to reload the images which should be on the IS server, except that...they disappear  >:(

On the positive note, though, the first 3 approved images are online and I got the very first download - $0.75  ;D

Thanks. Now I do not know if the "5" is 5 out of 5, or 5 out of 15...  ;)

Correction: I know now. Thanks again.

iStockPhoto.com / OK, so I am dumb...
« on: May 16, 2008, 06:43 »
...but could someone (pretty please) explain to me what this is:

On Istock site, when you go to "Upload" and then "Total uploads" - you are taken to  a page with all your images. The stats have number of columns: Image - Edit etc. The third column is the icon of a camera. What does it actually describe ?
The entry in that column is: "5.0 (1)".

(Forgot to add: finally I got accepted at Istock  ;D )

Mostphotos.com / Re: Who has had sales at MostPhotos?
« on: May 15, 2008, 19:46 »
Had a couple during my 2 months there: no complaints, as the site is still in the process of taking off, modifications, figuring out its bearings in the marketplace. I like the site, and its unconventional approach (which may be either good or bad - time will tell).

Shutterstock.com / Strange - number of downloads
« on: May 07, 2008, 01:10 »
What is the chance of getting identical number of downloads on SS for 5 consecutive days ?  It happened to me and did strike me as strange, so I did the numbers. I took all my downloads for the last 3 months, performed some statistical analysis - and the result is: 0.72E-6. Less than 1 in a milion...

Go figure.
And no - it is not 0 downloads  ;D

« on: May 06, 2008, 22:24 »
No plug-ins - just SpySweeper and PC-Cillin running. But - as I said - things fixed itself w/o my intervention, so I think it must have been a hickup on the srver (if such thing exists  :) )

Thanks. It must have been a server problem or some such - all is back to normal now.

« on: May 05, 2008, 07:45 »
Anyone else ? The site rejects my perfectly valid username and password, only to accept it after 3 or 4 attempts. But sometimes the browser just says "Done" - but nothing shows up. Fotolia started playing up couple of days ago - and is getting worse. Sometimes I can't even get the site. Any ideas ?

I have noticed that after one of my antivirus/antispy programs cleans everything (including cookies), I can't log in directly as a member: first I need to go to www.fotolia.com (I presume that the cookie is sent while connecting), and then I can log in using http://www.fotolia.com/Member/Contents

But now even the www.fotolia.com seems to work very randomly.

It really pisses me off.

I use Mozilla, have Java script and cookies enabled etc. No problems whatsoever with any of the other sites (and many others) - it is just Fotolia  ???

Glitch ? Maybe. But my last upload had ETR of 17 hours, which looked OK and more than acceptable. It was counting down to 5 hours, at which time it was reassessed as 70 hours. Three days later it was down to 6 hours - and again it went up to 30 hours or so. 10 days later the pics have been reviewed and accepted. So - I am not sure it is a glitch.

Software - General / Re: If you don't have Photoshop...
« on: April 14, 2008, 08:45 »
You could also try PictureWindow. Works in 16bit, and essentially does all that PS can do - although it needs getting used to and some things are just easier in PS. But it is a  good oiece of software, and is pretty cheap. I think evaluation version is also available free.

"...in our litigation-happy society..."

I doubt that as a society we are really that happy to sue everyone. I think this litigation culture has been invented and promoted by lawyers, for whom this is a gold mine. Perverting the original meaning of law, order and its implementation has become a subject of laborious studies for a lot of people who subsequently make a living out of it.

General Stock Discussion / How do the sites perform...
« on: April 11, 2008, 06:41 »
In my case - it looks like this (income, per day, normalized to 1):

SS                     1
StockXpert                   0.33
Mostphotos        0.27
Dreamstime        0.17
Fotolia              0.11
123RF               0.09
BigStock           0.07

I do not even mention Crestock or Canstock - since I deleted my accounts there.

It looks like most of the big 6 are not performing very well in comparison to SS...

I do not know...of course "the law is the law" - I am just wondering if anybody really knows what that means. To me - a picture of a trademarked item or a name is NOT the same as using a trademark or breaking copyright. If Coca-Cola name is in the pic - I am not using a Coca-Cola name to sell anything or to promote a product - I am selling an IMAGE. I think maybe it is time to undertake a class action and get a Supreme Court ruling on the issue  :D

But seriously - at which point it has become a no-no to have a name or a logo in the pic ? I just can't believe that any of the mentioned laws were conceived with the intention to forbid photographing logos or trademarks. Or - maybe the consumer should undertake a class action against the owners of the trademarks - let them have the trademarks etc. just do not display them in public nor in TV, as this violates my privacy by forcing me to view all this crap.

I think we all have become a race of slaves. We do not think anymore, just repeat "it is forbidden, do not do that, of course you can't have any trademarks or logos in your image". I am just wondering how does this look like from a sound legal ground.

There are two possibilities here: either the law actually does not forbid this (in which case we, including the microstock sites, are just overcautious), or it actually forbids this - in which case the world is seriously f....d up (and no smile).

Adobe Stock / Re: How to request a payment ?
« on: April 10, 2008, 04:49 »
Thanks, Chode - but there is NO "Convert credits" at "My credits".  So, the question still stands...

Adobe Stock / How to request a payment ?
« on: April 10, 2008, 03:41 »
The FAQ on Fotolia website state : "To convert credits into cash go to the My Credits page of your Fotolia account and click on the Convert credits into cash button."

Fine - but there is no such button there. There are two "clickable" options there - "Buy credits" and "Transfer credits", none of which serves the purpose.

So, the question is: how do I request a payment ? Is this information (FAQ) incorrect ? Do I need to actually click the "My Conversions" tab and select "Convertible credits" ?

StockXpert.com / Re: Everybody opted-in
« on: April 09, 2008, 19:40 »
Well, I did not opt in...since I never opted out. Subscriptions at StockXpert do not bother me much - about 90% of what I sold there comes from credit sales anyway, and the number of pics sold on subscription is lower than the number of pics in credit sales. Honestly - I do not care how they sell the pics and for how much - as long as they kep selling. StockXpert works OK for me.

CanStockPhoto.com / Re: Closing Account (not so easy)
« on: April 07, 2008, 07:47 »
If someone is considering deletion of files manually - you can open several windows and work all of them in sequence. Worked for me  :D  (just closed my Canstock account - a bit sad event, but it was not paying for the bandwidth used). Maybe others have better luck there - didn't work for me.

Let me put it this way: everyone wants things to happen RIGHT BLOODY NOW !

Which, to me at least, is quite unreasonable. I have joined MP about 6 weeks ago. Put about 120 pics there (more is coming). Got two sales and the first payout of $40. Had some jerks rating low or high on my pics - just blocked them, as my pics do not deserve neither 1 nor 10. No biggie.

It takes some time to build a site which can reliably sell pics. So far I am happy - partly because I do not expect quick results.

What I like:

1) Non-standard approach to the site form and shape

2) Decent pricing. Maybe it will have to be dropped a bit to attract more customers, maybe not - I do not care at this stage.

3) Folks at MP are trying hard - and I am willing to give them at least a year. It is easy to shoot a (good) image, upload it somewhere, and expect riches. It is much more difficult to make a business website work - so I will wait.

4) Folks there are responsive and on the ball.

5) Easy upload, easy contact, open to suggestions, trying hard to improve anything that needs improving (and sometimes things that do not need that too  ;) )

6) Overall - a bloody good start, good concept, good approach to most things.

So - I will wait and upload as many pics as I can, even if nothing sells for months. Right now they need images - preferably good images, in any quantities. I am trying to do my bit - because a success of a site like this does happen only if the contributors ACTUALLY CONTRIBUTE !

So - contribute ! If you do and nothing works for a long time - then you may have grounds for complaining. Right now - you don't.

Disclaimer: I have no association with MP other than contributing images - and as you noticed, I am NOT including my referral link. So - start contributing, and success of MP may become a self-fullfilling prophecy.

End of rant  ;D

These stories sound just...well, kind of unreal. Shutterstock on the whole appears to have pretty consistent review process, some of the rejections are (or used to be) a bit unjustified - but that was mostly due to sometimes a bit cryptic reason for rejection. But for the most part - the rejection is described well enough to have a second look at the picture - and to start wondering how I could have ovelooked this before ?  Most of the rejected images I was able to fix and resubmit - and they were accepted. I also learned to pay attention to things which the reviewer may be looking at, and to fix them before submission. Works for me.

Funny  :D  but it is not that bad.

Mostphotos.com / Re: voting system reaching annoying point
« on: March 29, 2008, 20:26 »
While voting can be considered as good or bad feature - it mostly depends on the users how it is received. Just do not engage in childish behaviour - and all should be fine. Someone slams your pics with obviously biased ratings - just block him, problem solved. Do not get annoyed, do not engage in "revenge" ratings. The number of stupid people roaming around the site and giving everyone "1" or "10" is very small - why should this annoy you to a degree that you consider dumping the site ?
