^ where did I say I want to go it alone? nowhere.

"please don't speak for "all of us" because you're not speaking for all of us. I'll speak for myself thanks."

sorry, I got the impression from that statement.   you of course know that alone we can't achieve anything, so speaking for yourself is even more useless. even united we may not be able to make a difference, but I'm willing to join in and try.

« on: January 14, 2013, 18:14 »
we should really leave our worst files up, so buyers just see B-grade content.

I'm not really keen on trying to take down iStock, but I think our hands are tied? putting that many high quality images out there for free, training ppl to expect free images, is going to hurt us all.

I only have a small port so I'm just a little tin boat floating along with the big ships, but I'm in.

Furthermore this needs to stop with this one deal. Right now there are other ways to sell your images and still make money. If this precedence isn't squashed right now- soon there won't be any other outlets.

I completely agree with you on this. but I question the wisdom of reacting versus planning a strategy based on facts.

So far, the facts are that Getty decided to give away my image for free on Google and stated they have more plans to do so.  My reaction to these facts are that I'm going to deactivate my images.
I'll for sure do 1000 on feb 2.  Not sure I feel like clicking that many boxes for too many hours but I'll commit to 1000.  I may get addicted and do more though :)

^ fair enough leaf. no one is questioning the anger or the concern, or what this deals means for all of us, so all the power to you and how you choose to handle this. how you handle it is your prerogative. you're not speaking for me, you are speaking for yourself and that's cool. it's those speaking for all of us that I take issue with. spamming this concern into social media without organization or strategy, or answers from Getty doesn't help anyone.

no disrespect, but what are you doing in a community forum if you want to go it alone?

Even if your image is better and perhaps more appropriate why would they pay for your image when mine is available for free. 6000 free images may kill the value of 60K images still for sale.
+1
very well said and exactly the reason why we should ALL be worried, regardless of our images being on Google Drive or not. And they are training people to expect free images, how sustainable is that?

1006
I'm not concerned about my kids, but certainly about models I've shot I would be more nervous.

there's a couple of options I see:
she can buy the copyright off you, and have you remove them, and take her chances with what may already be out there.

the marketing and PR people could be clever and use her to their advantage with "miss X has switched from Bank A to Bank B because we're so good, etc". Fun bank ads get everyone's attention.

Vannphoto:

When the largest and most respected stock agency starts giving away images, it not only tarnishes the reputation of this industry but punishes the rest of us.

again we are trapped. at the moment this scandal is still just known within the stock community, do we dare let it go wider? will that help? will we look like greedy, spoilt brats? (despite the fact we get 25c per sub dl, most ppl think we earn much more) the music industry beat this (to a degree) but they didn't have an army of amateur musicians willing to upload free content.

1011
It is very disturbing to hear that f the Google deal continues, then there will be no reason for people to buy images...anywhere.

we've all thought the past few months were the beginning of the end; it's like witnessing a train crash and we can't do a thing about it. can we?

General Stock Discussion / Re: A newbies view of the MS market
« on: January 10, 2013, 17:33 »
I wish I worked in our marketing department so see thru the eyes of a buyer thus giving me more insight. I am going on my 2nd year and still wandering the field looking for my vision... ::)

what's annoying is that the reviewers are far pickier than the buyers. but then having images accepted into this higher standard is pretty rewarding.

General Stock Discussion / Re: SS Jan/Feb trends
« on: January 10, 2013, 17:17 »
I'm happy, although it's my first January with SS (having joined in Feb last year) and my port also is very small (190) so I cant compare to last year, but I was sitting on something like 36 dls when I looked yesterday. I was expecting Jan to be bad so I'm pleased to see it's quite normal.

I haven't looked at your port but you've got to really look at how many diverse topics you have, not # of images. Esp when our ports are this small. keep shooting!

Wow great community service and I'll bet it appreciated for a long time. Interesting project.

Thanks Pete. Yeah, it's the first photographic project I've been excited about in a long time.  Seniors are great to photograph too.  So much life lived that shows up in their faces.  :)
what a lovely project, I should look into this also this year. my mil works in aged care so i'm sure she could make it happen.

It was mostly in jest, but the explanation was interesting.

I found it amusing. :D

PhotoDune / Re: Model Releases on PhotoDune - what to do?
« on: January 09, 2013, 16:58 »
I haven't bothered updating my port with them, even for non-modelled pics I just put PD at the bottom of the list as "too hard". I know I'm of little importance (for now :) ) but Lisa has the same feelings...

It's great to have feedback from the company, but eek! not a photographer Josh?, I dearly hope you aren't a reviewer also. So if you are the tech side of the business, you are saying you haven't bothered to investigate how your competition works? you haven't even gone through an upload process elsewhere?  Your comment that your site "is simple" is based on what experience?

How your site works (from our side) will also determine the quality of contributors you attract.

yes I've been reading these threads with much interest.

geez, exclusives just keep getting hammered? do they get any new sign ups??

my other thought was: ooooh, microsoft has lots of customers, maybe they should the new stock agency. i'd sell my stuff at 25c for a million downloads.

Don't they own Veer?

do they? no idea. why wouldn't they use their global brand name to take dominance of the industry? we could start converting everyone to buying images instead of stealing. although i'm an Apple person i'd be willing join microstock as a stock agency.

why not directly draw on screen? why limit yourself with ancient graphic tablets..

because it's nice to be able to watch your work without your hand in the way?

what?  :D

my hand was in the way long before the computer era..

remember it all started with pencil and paper and nothing is more comfortable than drawing on paper.. if anything, drawing directly on screen is more natural..

you get all the tactile warm and fuzzies from paper, less so from a screen.

123RF / Re: 123RF still offering 50% comm?
« on: January 07, 2013, 18:06 »
yes, they did promise that we really wouldn't notice the lower comms due to higher sales volume.

and now that they've dropped down a notch in my workflow I upload there as my 5th, so my port will grow slower and i'll not see the alleged volume increase. It will be half my fault if things stall.
