No, it's in English. I didn't know that. I have to look into it. I'm just uploading some Italian images there. At least the names there are in both languages.

Site Related / Front page link at the bottom?
« on: February 26, 2007, 20:53 »
I mostly enter current thread from the front pages. When I've finished reading a thread, and if I don't want to post anything to that thread, it would be nice to have a link back to the front page at the bottom of each page, since some of these pages are rather long.

Is it possible? It would save at least me several seconds ever year that I'm not sure what to do with yet, but I'm sure I'll come up with something   8)

Dreamstime.com / Ooops... total revenue down
« on: February 26, 2007, 19:49 »
I sent a request for payout at DT yesterday. After doing so, the amount for "Total Revenue" was reduced to "Old Total Revenue minus Payment Request".

Have anybody else had the same experience? Will it be adjusted up again, or should I contact them?

............  my saga continues at 123rf.   27 pix in review now...  20 days, uploaded on February 6th.

what's that all about?
                     8) -tom

Same here. I have 42 in the queue, some of them almost two weeks old. All my batches from before 14 Feb have been reviewed though, but sales have been slow as well recently, and much slower than they used to.

What is a travel shot anyway? A shot from somewhere you don't live? But everybody live somewhere. Are my photos from Italy travel shots at StockXpert, but not at Paxxion?

I think the travel shot label needs a re-definition. As agencies and customers are becoming more and more global, only shots from the most unaccessible places can really qualify as travel shots, and in my case, they would go to Alamy anyway.

Frankly, it bothers me that SS has never corrected a long-standing bug with the logout message (it comes up in random languages and has been doing this for around a year).  It may be a small matter, but it makes me wonder about the security of the core code  . . .

That bug was discussed on a thread at the SS forum, and I think the conclusion became something like "it's kind of cute having it like this, so don't change it". Buyers don't see it anyway.

i have one sale to, but 2 euros and 48 cent paypal costs... i dont like it i think

With very few exceptions, I've priced all my photos to at least EUR 5. There's not really any reason to go lower. If buyers want a high res photo at IS, they have to pay that much anyway, and this is a local site in a local language, something that means added value for many buyers.

General Stock Discussion / Microstock - for pros or hobby photog's
« on: February 26, 2007, 04:30 »
I think it will go in the opposite direction. The key to success in microstock is new uploads all the time, preferably every day. For amateurs, that's a tough tasks. Those who gain are the "microstock professionals, people who make a living only from microstock. There are a few of them around already, and my guess is that there's a market for a few hundred of them. Other people will have to settle for a pay-out now and then.

New Sites - General / First sale at Paxxion
« on: February 26, 2007, 04:24 »
I just had my first sale at Paxxion. EUR 5.00 minus PayPal fee. Still it adds up to more than USD 6. It's impossible to say what the future brings on the basis of only one sale of course, but it does mean that they have at least one customer   :D

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Is that all that Canon has got?
« on: February 26, 2007, 04:20 »
i'm still hoping they have a 1ds mark III in their back pockets ready for the upcoming pma

They don't, and here's why: for most pro photographers, the 1D3 has everything needed, including megapixels. I did a test, and upsized an 1D3 file to 70x100cm, 300dpi, and it works fine. Lots of detail. In many ways, this camera is a digital F5, the camera that could do anything you threw at it, although from another manufacturer.

If they are going to develop the 1Ds further, I suspect they have to move into the medium format territory. That means higher prices, new lenses, and possibly another body. There are speculations around a new lens mount, but I guess they'll try to stick with the existing one if they can. There were lots of unhappy photographers the last time they changed.

What we will probably see in the not too distant future, is an upgraded 5D, with the same amount of megapixels as the current 1Ds, and a few more features. The introduction of the 5D probably hurt the 1Ds sales a lot, since there isn't much difference in image quality, so it make sense to develop the more successful of the two.

If I'm right, they will end up with one reasonably priced, high resolution camera for studio and light use (5D plus), one heavy duty work horse (1D3) and one cutting edge, state of the art, very expensive Hasselblad competitor that most of us can only dream about.

All pure speculation of course, but there are clearly changes on the way.

no full size sensor, no sense in an upgrade

Ummmm.... what does the size of the sensor have to do with it?

lens conversion. costs heaps to get wide angles

Valid point. I have that problem for concerts (on stage). I need a fast wide-angle, and the only combo that will cut it is a 5D or 1Ds with 24mm f/1.4. Very frustrating.

So what I should do is buy a 5D, a 1Diii and lenses for a few thousand dollars, plus some black paint for the long lenses  ;D

There is clearly something wrong. Changes are being made to the site. I hope they have control of what they are doing. I hate losing sales because of technical glitches.

I hadn't had any sale there.  The deal sounded a bit fishy in the end, because the so-called site buyer never did anything with the site.  By then I did an Internet search with the name of the buyer, who apparently was from Australia, and I only found a maestro in the Sydney Opera House (if I remember it right) - not likely a stock photo site owner. I wish I knew someone with more contact with the previous site owner to clarify this.

Regards,
Adelaide

I think Laurin was in touch with him at some stage. He didn't have anything positive to say about the experience, to say it in a polite way  ;D

RAW.  I experimented with JPG, but the quality viewed at 100% was clearly not equal to RAW, at least not from my camera.  And supposedly the more important microstocks view our submissions at 100%, n'est pas?

It depends a lot on the camera. I use a Fuji S3 and an Olympus E-1. Both of them produces very good jpegs from the camera. I've understood that this isn't always the case with all camera though. the Fuji is actually preferred by many wedding photographers, partly because of its dynamic range, and partly because the jpegs give a faster work-flow. That probably makes sense for people who makes thousands of shots a couple of times per week.

Does anyone here think that the live preview function will be useful?

For macro, absolutely. I haven't checked if it's possible to zoom in for focus adjustments, but that would be nice. For PJ's it's probably also useful in crowds when they have to hold the camera high, not being able to use the viewfinder.

They want typical stock photos, not too artistic and very, very clean. I have sixty-something photos there, but still no sales after a year. I upload now and then, but don't waste too much time on them.

1. The best if you upload regularly is Shutterstock
2. The best if you don't upload regulary is Istockphoto

Thats my experience and opinion :)

I agree, but the upload limits a iStock can be a problem. For me, Dreamstime generates about the same income as iStock, and there are no limits.

I agree about the weather sealing. While Canon as well as Nikon make good, weather sealed bodies,
Unfortunately only in Canons 1D series.  As Ametures have to stay inside when it rains.

one up for the 4/3 guys I guess.

I bought one of the last E-1's here in Thailand when it went on sale, and paid only $700 for it, and an additional $700 for the excellent 11-22mm f/2.8-3.5 lens. It follows me everywhere. It's such a nice camera. Only 5MP, but those are very nice pixels   ;D

Are they saying that 10mp is enough?  isn't the 5D 12mp?  therefore aren't you trading off the 12mp of the 5D for the speed of the 1D.  I thought they were going to bring out a 22mp one as well.

This looks to be a pure sports photography camera.  It shoots 10 fps @ 10 MP!  Wow!  Pro sports photographers are probably drooling over this one.

The nice thing is that the very complete feature set makes it a good all round camera as well (read my post above). We may be getting back to the "old" days, when each manufacturer had one top body that solved most photographic challenges, unless you needed some particular feature. That would be a very positive development in my eyes.

If canon now has 4 stop IS technology (in there 70-200 f4L IS), why arn't they rolling this out across the board.

Note: I want the 100-400 L so was hoping they would upgrade the IS to 4 stop (from 2) and upgrade the weather proofing (to lose its name "the dust pump").

I agree about the weather sealing. While Canon as well as Nikon make good, weather sealed bodies, it's very hard to get a clear statement with regards to weather sealed lenses. Olympus made that very clear from the start of the 4/3 system, and now Pentax has done the same with some of their lenses.

photographers will no longer need to trade off resolution, image quality, and speed against each other.

Agree this looks like a well rounded camera and very tempting.  I just want it in a smaller lighter body since my main use is travel.

The difference between 10 and 12MP is totally unimportant. Nobody can see the difference anyway, even at very large formats. What makes the 1DIII so interesting isn't only the speed, but the complete feature set, the image quality (also at high ISO), the weather sealing etc. The 5D is basically an amateur camera with a big sensor. It's a nice camera, but for pro use, it's not nearly in the same class.

And for travelling, I have the Olympus E-1. Compact, solid, weather sealed body and lenses, excellent image quality and very good ergonomics (much better than Canon in that respect).

That is the first Canon camera ever that has made me consider changing from Fuji/Nikon. Apart from ergonomics, where Nikon still excels, this seems to be the best all purpose DSLR ever.

And all that for ONLY $4,000!

Ummm... not really. Then I would need the 24mm f/1.4, the 24mm TS, the 50mm f/1.2, the 85mm f/1.2, the 135mm f/2.0, a couple of zooms, black paint for those awful, white telephoto lenses...
