@sgoodwin & @pixelbytes

Do you sell photos or illustrations? And how large is your portfolio?

Photos, with the occasional illustration made up of photos.  The statistic I like to look at is total return per accepted image per year.  From 2010-2013 at CS this has ranged from $0.24 to $0.32 - not great, but much better than BS which was $0.08 to $0.16 and not much behind FT at $0.18-$0.41.  Of course, none of those are very good compared to SS, where total return per accepted image per year has ranged from $1.83 in 2010 to $2.33 last year and so far this year is slightly higher.

Stated another way, I have made from $24 to $32 per year for every 100 images accepted at CanStock - not bad for the few extra minutes needed to submit there every year.  I shoot mostly landscapes, travel and simple isolations so I assume most people do much better than that.

I thought I had stopped getting sales there but I just logged in and have done quite well the past week, including some decent credit sales, not just all subs like usual.  Almost makes me want to start uploading there again, except for that credit sales for subs payout deal.  If they change that to something reasonable I might think about it.  Or not.

Sales there are very variable but overall I have made more there than BS and almost as much as FT.  Uploading is very easy and that keeps them on the upload list for me.

With a week to go in September, sales volume is off about 10-15% from what it was before the summer.  For me, based on the map the reason is an almost complete loss of sales from Europe beginning about the second week in June.  I was hoping it was just due to summer vacations but so far it hasn't picked up this month.  It used to be when I checked overnight sales every morning there would be a big bump from Europe (I am in the US), but since the second week of June those dropped off considerably - this morning none, and the new normal seems to be only very few if I am lucky.  The past four months the loss of volume was made up by more than usual high-value SODs or (this month) ELs, but if those sales hadn't happened it would be grim.  Not sure where the Europeans are now getting their images but a big drop there is what I have noticed.

All other sites seem to have decreased as well so it isn't like someplace else has started to take off.  Total monthly DLs the past couple months were less than the average for last year so it is definitely a big drop.  Whether this is just due to the huge increase in the number of competing images or a drop in sales at agencies I don't know.

Just saw the Shutterstock ad on Facebook. More than 1,100 likes and hundreds of shares. Meanwhile, iStock's FB page collects more and more disgruntled posts, mostly from buyers. Time to buy shares of SSTK?

No, the time to buy was right after they went public - they are up about 350% from then and were up almost 500% at their peak.  I thought about buying some when they went public and didn't - missed opportunity.  I still think they should give contributors stock options.

Back to the OP - the new iS so far isn't doing much, won't hold my breath waiting for improvement.

Fewer DLs, less money per DL.  So far not working for me or iS.

Mine have stayed at $0.30.  Maybe that is for one of the image pack "subscriptions"?

Maybe this is just a summary of the data from a much longer actual thesis in Turkish?  I can't imagine awarding any kind of advanced degree for posting histograms of survey questions with no introduction, materials and methods or discussion.  We don't know anything about who was sampled except they do not seem to be very successful since most sold fewer than 100 images in a month.  I didn't look after the first few pages as I doubt it can tell us anything interesting.

I have never had two payouts in a year. Of course my port isn't that popular I guess.
I try and create new stuff and upload at least one or two photos a day on average.
The problem with my port is I don't shoot people. That seems to be the most popular
target. I've been with SS since 2007 and  there is no change in sales always three to five sales a week. My port doesn't get found gets lost in the maze of others. I finally got a payout the other day and that will probably be the last one until next year sometime unless buyers find my port more often. KINDA DISCOURAGING!

Wow, you have been submitting 1-2 images a day for the past 7 years?  If we take 1.5/day as an average, that is about 548/year or 3833 over the past seven years, and you only get 3-5 sales a week?  I'd say that's much more than kinda discouraging.  You should get some sort of perseverance award - I would have given up long ago with that kind of result.  I tried to look at your port but couldn't find it.  I don't shoot people or other popular subjects either but get much better results than that with far fewer images.  If it isn't the quality of your images then it must be keywording - are you using the free microstockgroup keywording tool?  If not, you should try it out, it's a great help.

Thanks for the explanation, but it still seems way too complicated.  Why not just: buyer pays Envato $XX, author gets 36%?  Isn't that the net result for non-exclusive sales?   Or does it depend on the sales amount?

Envato / Re: PhotoDune Non-ex Rate Increase from 25% to 33%
« on: September 01, 2014, 10:31 »
I looked on their site and it's still confusing.  In the example they give of a $100 purchase it works out to be a 36% commission, with a 55% "author's fee" that appears to be constant on the 80% remaining after the buyer's fee is subtracted.  If the "buyer's fee" is always 20% then it would work out to a 36% non-exclusive commission to us for all sales - 3% more than before so that will be a nice raise.  Unless the buyer's fee varies then we will not know.  I assume a variable buyer's fee is unlikely so hopefully it will always be 36% to authors - a step in the right direction.  Thanks to Envato for that!

1039
For me sales volume dropped off from 5-20% beginning in June with the worst last month, and I had 0 downloads yesterday for the first day in a very long time.  Decent amounts of SODs kept the revenue steady so I always made payout but was nervous a couple of months.  Based on the map the reason was an almost complete drop in sales from Europe beginning after the first week of June.  European sales started to appear on the map again last week and there were a few more this morning so I'm hoping it was just a long summer vacation and will return to normal this month.

Are we getting 36% royalties instead of 33% for none exclusives?
Good question

That's what it sounds like to me, but they sure make it confusing with all these fees - why not just list the commission percent like every other site?

WMY there for me.  Mostly subs so RPDL at $0.83 - first time below $1 all year.  Less than 1/10 of SS this month.  Hope it picks back up in the fall.

General Stock Discussion / Re: State University Buildings
« on: August 29, 2014, 13:43 »
I have submitted them as commercial before to those agencies and it was not a problem but haven't tried recently.  As long as they are taken from public areas or roads it should not be a problem legally (but I am no lawyer so don't take that for legal advice) - and public universities are public property.  Just be careful about recent buildings as they might be copyrighted.  SS used to have problems with individual buildings but not so much for views of campus.  Some agencies won't take them unless they are editorial - you will just have to try and see about current policies, they will let you know very quickly and most of them are overly cautious.  SS removed all my images of a certain campus a few years ago, presumably due to a complaint, but with others there has not been a problem with the same images and of course you also can submit them RM to Alamy.  They typically are not big sellers but you will probably make enough to pay for gas if the campus is not too far away.

« on: August 29, 2014, 13:27 »
This is terrible.  I have to go to Exeter for a couple nights next month for my real job and was thinking of renting a car and driving around Cornwall for a couple of days.  If I had known I won't be able to take stock photos of anything there I would have scheduled to come back right away and skip it.  I will definitely avoid any NT properties but it doesn't look like much is left.  Should have gone to Spain instead.

It should not be legal for them to do this.  For buildings or gardens that require an entry fee I can more or less see it, but for public access landscapes it makes no sense at all.  Hopefully someone will challenge them and the courts will be more reasonable.

If you didn't receive the e-mail then you probably don't have any UK sales.  If you go to the Build a Downloadable Sales Report button you can generate a report, then look in the Region column to see where they were bought.  Unfortunately that's as much as you can find out as far as I can tell - no way to find out the rest.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Who is on your blacklist?
« on: August 26, 2014, 07:58 »
OK, I'll play.

I agree with cascoly - no blacklist, but no longer submit to:

Crestock - slow and inconsistent reviews, low sales, low commissions (20% I think and 25 cent subs doesn't work for me)

Cutcaster - no sales originally, then got some sales and put them back on distribution, but they reject too much and no more sales so stopped uploading again.  If a slow-selling site has a higher rejection rate than SS they get dropped.

Yay - almost no sales and weird pricing, not worth even the minimal time needed to upload

Depositphotos - once I found out about the subs royalties for image packs they went off the distribution list

Panthermedia - sales are too low to be bothered by the clunky upload process

iStock - ditto above.  At some point I may start uploading again but every time I even think about getting into DeepMeta to do all those categories then something else becomes more important.  If I can copy and paste categories and keywords as someone said the other day then I might do it again, but it's too much bother right now.  They were worth the time when sales were good but not so much now.

On the cusp:

Envato - too many rejections and 33% commission isn't that compelling for a low-selling site.  Sales so far are enough to keep them on the list but just barely.  If sales drop or they continue to reject too many they will be off the distribution list.

GL - almost no sales.  Their easy upload process keeps them in the queue for now but at some point I may stop bothering.

On the positive side the smaller sites that I like and wish had better sales:

pond5 - 50% commission, set your own prices and good sales of video.  Upload is not the easiest but not horrible - hope they do better in the future.

featurepics - easy upload process, 50% commissions and enough sales to keep them interesting.  No subs so RPDL is higher than all of the major sites.

Veer - they've had some problems in the past but now have fast and reasonable reviews.  Sales are not great but for me they have the highest RPDL of any of the regular stock sites (except for Alamy and pond5) - a good ratio of ELs to regular downloads.  They listened to the community and made subs payouts a percentage of what was actually downloaded so usually more than the minimum.  Hope they can sell more in the future.

Cutcaster / Re: Sales on Cutcaster
« on: August 23, 2014, 06:52 »
When I started contributing there I had hoped that they would succeed but I have never had more than the odd random sale there so when they started with random block rejections i stopped submitting altogether.

+1.  After initially uploading around 150 images there as a test I stopped for  a couple of years due to no sales - they were the only site I was on with no sales at all.  I had a couple of small sales towards the end of last year and a larger one in January so thought maybe they were coming to life and started uploading again.  However, after too many rejections and no more sales I stopped - with a rejection rate higher than SS they aren't worth the effort.  These low-earning sites need to have: 1) a decent commission rate of at least 40% (CC is OK there); 2) an easy uploading system (CC is OK there as well as I recall); and 3) fast, reasonable reviews (CC fails there).  You can't be picky about images when you don't have sales or it's not worth the effort of uploading there.  That's why I no longer upload to CC (too picky), Yay (almost no sales), Crestock (random reviews, few sales, too low commissions), and iS (too complicated for uploading and no ftp).  However, I have kept up with featurepics, GL, photodune, pond5, etc., because uploading is easy, reviews are fast and reasonable and the level of sales justifies the effort.  Hopefully CC can turn it around but I won't hold my breath.

Thanks to previous posters for providing information about this.  I just went through it as well as I could and it was not as easy as all of that.  If you live in the US, it might be easier to just let Alamy handle it unless you think the amount of money will be large.  Here is my experience.  If anyone knows how I should have done it differently please let me know.

I went to the DACS web site, registered and filled out the online form as indicated by others by putting in "Alamy claim 2013" in all of the fields.  I have no idea if my image was used for books, magazines or whatever so just put it in for them all except for TV, which based on the image seems unlikely.  Ok, fine up to this point.

Eventually you come to a page where they want bank information, including IBAN and SWIFT numbers.  The SWIFT number is no problem, but apparently most banks in the US don't use IBAN numbers so I couldn't put anything into that mandatory field.  Eventually I just put "No IBAN number" or something like that and it took it.  The interesting part is that they never asked for an account number so I'm not sure how the money will get to your account once it reaches the bank.

At the end, there was something about non-UK residents and taxes.  The US has a tax treaty with the UK to avoid double taxation making us exempt from UK income taxes since the IRS will nail us anyway.  For this you have to send them a DACS residency form.  OK, no problem, I printed that out, scanned it and e-mailed it back with my Alamy sales report in csv format downloaded from the Alamy web site.  OK up to this point - annoying but not too bad.

However, to avoid them withholding a 20% UK income tax, you also have to get certification from the HMRC.  Here is where it gets to be a pain.  After perusing the HMRC web site, I downloaded what I think is the appropriate form - Form US-Individual 2002.  This form of course requires you to enter a full description of the royalties, date of contract and the UK payer - none of which you know because neither Alamy nor DACS has told us.  So of course we can't fill out the form until afterwards, even though the whole purpose is to avoid paying the tax in the first place.

The worst part is that you have to provide the HMRC with proof of US Residency for tax purposes, which requires the IRS to send them a Form 6166.  You get the Form 6166 by sending the IRS a completed Form 8802 AND A CHECK FOR $85!  So to do this and avoid them charging you UK income tax you have to pay the IRS $85 up front.  Not worth the effort nor the money.  I'm dropping it at this point, and if I had not already sent everything to DACS would just send Alamy their form and be done with it.  Unnecessarily paying the UK 20% I suppose is better than paying Alamy 50% but I could have saved myself a lot of time by not bothering.  Of course I'll change that opinion if it turns out to be a large amount, but I'm not holding my breath for that.

My recommendation: unless you have a lot of images that apply or think it will be a lot of money, it probably isn't worth the time and effort to do it yourself - much better to just fill out the brief Alamy form and be happy with anything you get.

After the second Alamy message, I went to the DACS web site to see how to file a claim.  The problem is that you need proof of where and how your image was used.  Alamy only said how many images you could claim for, not which ones or how to find the proof.  The problem is that once DACS takes their 18% and you split the remaining part 50% with Alamy we are getting 41 cents on every dollar.  I'd rather file myself but without knowing which image is eligible and where it appeared that is near impossible - which I'm sure Alamy is well aware of.  If it was a low-value sale it's hardly worth bothering about, but if it was one for $200 then maybe.   I wish Alamy would provide us with the image info so we could do this ourselves, but it could be quite a lot of money for them over all photographers so I'm sure they would rather keep their 50%.  I don't have time to search for other uses of every image I sold on Alamy so will most likely just go through them.

That image would be perfect for a Cape Town business to hang in their lobby - I wonder what size print he sold.  Kudos to the photographer for pulling that off!
