General Stock Discussion / Re: Adobe Stock Fashion - Mockery
« on: September 19, 2016, 15:44 »
Hi everyone,

I saw this on Bored Panda:
http://www.boredpanda.com/adobe-stock-apparel-clothing-line/

They are not actually for sale but it is making fun of stock.

Sometimes I feel embarrassed to say I do stock photography - like it is becoming a joke. I take it very seriously ... Maybe I'm too sensitive ...

Maybe you take all of this too serious. The shirts are funny and the jokes are appropriate for the industry that makes thousands of these cliche standard shots, and people who think they can make money, shooting many more of them.

How about this, dio you find it offensive or a good poke at stock?  http://www.boredpanda.com/soldering-iron-stock-image-fails/

Maybe this says the same things that the Adobe Ts make fun of, but will anybody be offended by the truth?

https://boagworld.com/design/stock-photography/

Note the date. 2010 and it's never going to stop? Buyers want something different not the stock cliche's, I don't know why photographers keep pumping out this junk and expect it to sell.

iphone is merely copycatting other mobile brands now.

Minus the earphone jack, which means a $150 wireless headset to make it play. Thank you Apple again for making your product what the dictators at your company want us to have. User unfriendly except the Mac-nazi's and Chauvinists. This will some day come back at them, like it did to iStock.

The earnings on my contributor page has been reset to zero. It still shows up correctly in the total earnings section on the monthly spreadsheet. I have never paid out before. Anyone experiencing anything like this?

Yes, pretty much every month. And there's also a question like this here every month. Congratulations on making first payout. Next you will get an email and a few days later a paypal payment.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Uber vs microstock
« on: September 07, 2016, 20:13 »
And this is the thing with micro-stock this is what makes all agencies work on the assumption that some lost some gained. If fifty contributors leave today they are easily replaced by another hundred tomorrow. This is why they can do whatever they want with us and all we can do is either put up with it or bail out at a loss. On this score micro-stock must be a heavenly paradise for an entrepreneur.

I agree except if 50 don't leave we are still getting replaced by 100 new people every week. How do the new people upload 18,000 new a year when we are hard pressed to add 1000?

I'm going with Zero. Nobody is forcing us to do Micro and nobody is forcing Uber drivers to work for a below minimum wage. Do micrstockers make minimum wage for the average person. Not the few percent that make a good wage, of all the people doing this, the returns are paltry, along with the percentage share of sales being being slave labor.

Voluntary slave labor which makes it like what? Anyone know a Microstock pimp who gets referral fees for recruiting us?  ::)

« on: August 29, 2016, 11:10 »
I don't understand why everyone is upset about that map.

It's fun, but not really useful.  I would be fine with the map vanishing altogether, if everything else was fixed.  Heck, just fix half of everything else.

Agree. Never ever, understood the usefulness. sales in the middle of the ocean?.. Please. they have always said it is not accurate at all. Having Best august in 3 years.

Would you rather they don't report sales when there's no IP address to tell where they are from. Then people will complain that sales are showing in earnings but not on the map. What's your solution to make people happy?

No one knows ...especially Istock ::)

You nailed it.

Check now. My images are back almost the same. #1 shot is back in #1 - the rest are close.

What did I say? Just wait and it will come back.

About the map, oh the hunatity, what can we do, the beta map crashed and burned. But my sales earnings summary is working.

Do people just watch all day long finding things to complain about? Must be terrible living in a dark negative cloudy world. We all need to have deep sympathy for Laurin because he's been dropped for four years. Poor guy, who claims to have record and TV royalty music deals, runs a teaching photo business, is wanted by Hollywood for his famous photo mad skills, but microstock is his life complaint? Get Real! Does Mr. Beverly Hills need these 25c downloads? Doesn't anybody else see the contradiction?

"im currently working with about 16 people who really show they have what it takes for a career and I don't mean 25 cents at a time. It is so much better for me to do it by e-mail. they can send huge files, No threat of theft as on the forums and I can fix things and share so Much better. For the Ones that Really want a Life in Image making. And I can do it for free because it doesn't require Models, studios Upkeep and 10 Hours a day.

My biggest regret is Missing thousands of great friendly People I've met from every corner of the world, we could discuss, get mad at,kid around with, be sad with.....A real Online community. I don't feel that at all anymore.

I will be reading, just not Posting in the general forum or critique forum which has been My home base since day one. I am here and will always be here for any Photo/Camera/Lighting related question you have and so will My Cousin, Best friend and Pardner Dave."

Go play your guitar and enjoy life. I'm tired of wading through you piles of BS.

Popular search finally got screwed up for me. A search term in which I had the #1 spot and 2 in the top 3 for years now I'm suddenly half way down the page. Fortunately buyers are scrolling past the crap and continuing to buy my images in approximately the same rate. Interestingly, several images that were always right beside mine on the top row are still there, so the 'algorithm' seems to be subjective.

I'll try to find the thread above and see what they are saying.

Here's what they are saying
whatever there doing It's GREAT! for me. best sales Month in a few years. July was the worst In Years. August is red Hot. Like the Old days. Now...If this could stay and,,, get back the SOD,EL and Footage Im a Very Happy Camper. Almost feel Like saying Im sorry.

I say wait 3 weeks and look again you might be back on top. New files go up. Files that have downloads and views, move up. There's no way yours have magnetic glue for the top of the page no matter how good they are. None of us do. Why should we? You mean everything new should get sent to the back of 100 pages and die there? Do you want you new files to be sent back to be buried? Can't have it both ways.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulip_mania it started here......

Rare Beanie Babies there's a good joke. By the bucket and bin full at resale shops 50c but they still list on the value guide for $4-5 people paid more for the little cases and have closets full of the dam things.

Grannies buy these stocks, because they hear it's hot. Enron, Worldcom, Tyco and others. Then they collapse and little grannie gets screwed, but they don't need the money. SSTK investors don't have any idea that the PE is way out of line or the profits from sales are down 60% from a few years ago. Sales went up 200% profits barely make a gain.

At best SSTK is a $30 stock. That's tops and high for real value.

1037
Isn't there any kind of forum or even a place where they post notices to us on the iStock site any more? I can't find it in the links or in the site map.
They don't seem to be bothering to review files, either. I uploaded a handful a few weeks back and they're just sitting there pending, except one they rejected  because it was editorial and they don't like shutterstock's caption style.

That's false and you know it. I change nothing between my SS and IS editorial file caption and they are accepted at both. The problem is something you are doing, like that old all caps or punctuation. I upload identical to both and get no style rejections. It must be you.

If it sounds like complete BS, it probably is.

The anti gov't conspiracy theorists are working overtime.

I became convinced long ago that stock market prices are divorced from reality, especially now with the computerized high-speed trading... it's about the traders, has nothing to do with Shutterstock or its intrinsic value. Not anymore.

Doesn't look so i impressive when you look at the longer term chart.
https://uk.finance.yahoo.com/echarts?s=SSTK#symbol=SSTK;range=5y

What caused that huge drop during mid-august of 2015?

Wasn't that a Getty deal with Google, or something like that, that made the market reassess SS's prospects?

Right and no matter what the price now, SSTK is still over priced over valued. Anybody who can read the reports, income is up, percentage profits from sales are way down. Jon gets paid with stock not income. When stock makes money to a specific point, he gets more as a reward. Stock price is his income and many other EOs there. They need to make the stock go up any way they can.

Welcome to the dollar store man.
Sorry, but we cannot sell you the gold rolex watch you are looking for a dollar, our apologies.
:-)

You haven`t actually read the thread and/or post, did you?
I was just jocking, hence the smiley at the end.
It is not your case, but in general customers could not expect to find niche quality photos in microstock.
For 30-40 cents per download I really cannot see anybody traveling to a specific location for a shooting.
I only do video, but I suppose in stills at these prices you can only shoot what you have avaible around you with zero costs involved
Except where people live near the "niche" the only way to make things work these days is to be ruthless in minimising costs I think.

You and Tror are right. Less of us are willing to work for 25c to make a specific good location image. No way to make back expenses. Or we decide to upload to where we can make back more and not to micro. You get what you pay for has been happening.

General - Top Sites / Re: Fotolia no sales
« on: August 05, 2016, 12:19 »
Hi, I started recently, got some 50-80 files on FT, IS and SS. While with IS and SS I started having downloads right after uploading some 20 files, FT has zero movement for me, some views and that's all. While I understand that my portfolio is still tiny, I was expecting at least a fraction of what is happening for me at IS and SS to get me going.

I was wondering if the country selection on FT maybe has any impact? Or FT is simply a lower performer and need bigger amount of files to get thing going?

Probably you don't have what FT customers need. In my experience, best sellers at FT and SS are different. I don't know much about IS, but I guess IS is closer to SS with compared to FT.

Same here. File types that sell on FT have never had 1 sale on SS or IS. What sells over and over on SS few or none on FT.

IS is so poor and unstable I can't decide what sells and doesn't. With the partners and ts but paid, it means more different buyers might be there. With their confusing pricing, plans, collections, and subs, it drives buyers away. Inconsistent can't make sense of downloads there.

Yep mine rose for a while maybe a year ago, but this year has been steadily declining

Used to pay 50c a download until SS bought them. Nothing but fall for me. I left.

If they kill off exclusive and keep the new money, they will make a bunch more profit. I'd be happy if they gave indies a raise but why would they? This will be grab the money and nothing else. We get less or nothing more. That's the way Getty thinks. All for them, none for us.

1046
theres contruibutors who blow up PD or Nasa images and improve quality, so there is something to say for that, but then again, some indeed just sell originals, in the end, an original pd image can be copyrighted. its a mine field

Not illegal to sell PD images or edit and sell them. No you can't copyright the original PD image just by copying it, making minor adjustments and selling. If you combined PD images and made something new, maybe.

Alamy contributor put the collection up, not Alamy. Alamy used IS company to find and send notices. Alamy should have removed or blocked the collection and her images as soon as Highsmith contacted them with the facts.

Getty and IS send these letters out like peanuts and don't know what their computers are doing. We don't get paid for these claims or payments. Shake Down Crooks is a nice way of calling Getty what they are. Then they have their shadow companies sending out these claims for others?

Nice to see Getty getting a bit of their own medicine.

This could change some things for us as well. Make DMCA for payment instead of just a notice and free use after take down. Time to make people pay for stealing our work.

http://www.thestranger.com/slog/2016/07/28/24405612/could-this-lawsuit-change-photo-history-a-photographer-is-suing-getty-for-1-billion

"By giving away her work for free, Ms. Highsmith has reduced the potential for a working photographer to get assignments or sell stock of those same subjects. It is SO challenging to get enough good paying work as a photographer when you are competing against FREE! In addition, the more high quality imagery that is available for free, the more photographs in general lose their value in the public eye,"

1047
It looks like they are equal opportunity thief - I saw watermarks from SS, DT and 123 on only a few images so there are probably many more.  This should definitely be reported to the agencies and I hope they follow up.

Reported for what?  http://corporate.findlaw.com/intellectual-property/parody-fair-use-or-copyright-infringement.html

1048
you really should read the lawsuit https://www.scribd.com/document/319553374/Gov-Uscourts-Nysd-460787-1-0#fullscreen&from_embed

it is a good read i have to say, interesting stuff, looks like getty and alamy are caught red handed and its quite unbelievable that 2 professional agencies have made these cataclysmic mistakes

Alamy used Getty operations Picscout and LCS to find infringing uses and send out the notices. Alamy has also allowed the Everett Collection Inc to sell on their site. Not really Alamy cataclysmic mistakes. Don't forget that when we upload editorial only they can't verify ownership of every image, the trust is placed on the person uploading. In this case the Everett Collection Inc.

Getty and the companies they created are the major offenders. I can't see them getting away with this illegal use, and false claims of infringement.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Best seller all time
« on: July 28, 2016, 14:31 »
Don't blame the search, understand the competition.

In 2010 there were probably 2000 isolated apple on white of 1 million photos, now there are 223,473 choices of 100 million, for the same. Buyers will not buy your older shot, even if it's better then most of the new, because buyers have many more choices for exactly what they want. Not just because the search changed.

New photos get a search boost on most agencies to compensate for old photos having the most sales. This gives the buyers a better choice and selection, instead of the old files having a slanted advantage based on nothing but times sold. Agencies don't care about us or our place in the search, they care about buyers experience and best choices for new and different materials to download.

The algorithm is not going to change back to anybodys favor. Ever!

General Stock Discussion / Re: Is a photo of a map legal?
« on: July 28, 2016, 14:16 »
What does a song have to do with a map? Would I be confused by a copy of a map. U make no sense unnonimus.

The right answer for maps is public domain or out of copyright can be used. All others can't.

Beethoven is out of copyright, Chuck Berry is not. ELO either had permission and paid, they used the Berry lyrics. Permission is required from and royalty payment to the company that owns the rights to the song and lyrics.

http://chuckberry.com/licensing/

Map license to reproduce a portion could be legally obtained. Then hope that SS accepts that license.
