Strange, but VERY funny!

I just used a screen capture utility to grab the image below which is right-click protected. Watermarks are a MUST for photos on non-microstock sites!

Bigstock.com / Re: Tiresome keyword system advice
« on: September 19, 2009, 09:01 »
I'm assuming that you have IPTC data embedded into all of your images. If so, the FTP process is fairly painless. If not, you should be doing so (a great piece of software for this is Photo Mechanic by Camera Bits for PC or Mac) since all of the sites automatically read that data and populate the title, description and keywords fields.

When I first started in micro, I didn't know about IPTC data and my post-production time was significantly increased as a result. Now, I keyword once for each photo, then upload. A huge time-saver!

Hope that helps.

I try to avoid that by breaking shoots up into different batches. I upload the same number of photos every week, so I just put a couple from each shoot in the folder for each week.

Those are good questions. I've been doing this for 5 years and still don't know the answers!

it just allows you to see the image (not a very big view) and all the file info on your monitor.

Why not use an image viewing software like XNView set to view most recent file with large thumbnail file? I played with that with my Nikon and was pleased with the workflow.

It seems like everything that I FTP shows up right away.... Maybe you should contact Veer support.

Go into your Workspace and click on the "Select Files" tab. You can also click on the "New" link right under the word "Workspace" on the right-hand side near the top. The files that you uploaded should be there.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Highest sync speed in pro-sumer DSLR?
« on: September 17, 2009, 10:58 »
I had purchased a D70 from someone on craigslist and had no problems with a 1/500 shutter speed using my radio triggers on the strobes. Unfortunately, 6MP doesn't really cut it for microstock if you want larger size sales.

I am interested in freezing motion (hair whipping, jumping, etc.) in the studio. Perhaps in the future, as I acquire more knowledge and skill, I'll be using the strobes outside. For now, I use reflectors when shooting outdoors.

The problem for me using small on-camera flashes is the amount of light. I love the fact that I get pure white out of my backdrop straight out of the camera and am not willing to lose that.

Thanks for all of the advice and please keep it coming!  ;)

The D70 (at only 6MP) has a sync speed of 1/500, but I can't seem to find anything else affordable that does... :-\

General Stock Discussion / Extended License
« on: September 16, 2009, 22:23 »
I was curious if anyone was willing to share what types of photos they get the most extended license sales on. We have only gotten a couple and so I was curious to see if there is a "type" of image that does better than others for the extended license. Thanks in advance for any information.

I forgot to mention that I'm using $40 eBay wireless triggers for the strobes. Don't laugh! They fire around 98% of the time for me!  ;)

Cameras / Lenses / Highest sync speed in pro-sumer DSLR?
« on: September 16, 2009, 17:56 »
I was wondering if anyone knew what the highest flash sync speed is on a pro-sumer grade DSLR. I only use strobes, not speedlights, so I'm constrained by the camera sync speed. Unless I'm incorrect and you can use high-speed X-sync with strobes.

If anyone has info regarding any of the above, I'd greatly appreciate it!

The color predictions are not only valuable to us as photographers, but to those of us that are designers as well. Whether you buy into it or not, LOTS of people do, and that is what makes a trend. I'll be using those color and thanks for the info!

is there a way to get a pc to sit loading his pages, I have a number of idle pcs at work at the moment, the university at which I work probably wouldn't notice the bandwidth difference, but he may

Sure there is. It's called a "Denial of Service" attack. Ask your local hacker, they can probably help out!  ;)

That's very well done. The use of gobo is often neglected. This is how you get those nice skin tone and the lovely clean separations, due to lack of light spill.
Congratulations. Love the skin tones of the model. Your strobe tubes must be well used to have gotten rid of the sickening blue tint that plague new studio lights before burning in. Well done.

Thanks! I just set a custom white balance before the shoot and I'm all set. Plus, all 3 strobes are the same brand (el-cheapo $65 eBay), so that  helps with temperature differences, as well.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Microstock tug o' war
« on: September 10, 2009, 19:19 »
Thanks for the info Sean. I just get so frustrated with CV! It makes it extremely difficult to shoot concept photos when you can't put the concept into the keywords. I'll try to keep my venting under control in the future.  ;)

I would say that those numbers are purely subjective. For a full-time pro, the numbers have to be higher than for a hobbyist just looking to make a few extra bucks.

If you are happy with the trend of your sales, then your images are successful! Don't listen to people telling you how much you need to make in order for it to be worthwhile... If you enjoy shooting (and editing, and keywording, and uploading!) photos, then you don't have to make as much to feel like a success.

If you're strictly business, then you'll need to have more downloads.

I can only assume that many of you (and I'm sure that you know who you are) are only producers of imagery, not buyers. I happen to be both and I can tell you from years of experience that I will look through many more than 200 images to find the one that I want.

Many buyers on micro sites are in a position similar to my own: They are buying an image for a client project. Therefore, they need an image that represents that particular client, not just some "businessman in a chair isolated on white".

Even with the millions of photos available, I often have to settle for an "almost" shot, rather than finding one that is exactly what I need. It is one the (many) things that makes me so mad when photos are rejected for "we don't need any more of those".

With intelligent keywording (which iStock doesn't allow! >:() you can get your image in front of the person looking for just what you've produced, regardless of the number of images available on any given site.

Perhaps we as photographers should spend a bit of time talking to local ad agencies to find out what they are looking for, rather than guessing and hoping to get it right.

Newbie Discussion / Re: understanding copyright on tech design
« on: September 06, 2009, 22:55 »
If you remove the logos and product numbers, etc. you should be all set unless the design of the product itself is highly recognizable. For example, I've had a photo of a cell phone rejected for copyright (see image below). If you stick to more generic designs you should be fine.
