It's annoying that there's such opposite information out there.
At college I learnt to format every time I do a new shoot.
Download every day.
use a card reader, no connecting directly to the computer.
nothing about deleting in camera, which I do sometimes do when I'm running out of space (and my spare card is not with me)

iStockPhoto.com / free downloads are XXXL?
« on: January 03, 2013, 19:12 »
just followed a link of the freebie of the month from iStock and the dl is available for free up to the biggest size (11MB!). Is that normal? I thought freebies were only ever 72ppi blog sizes? (DT does this?)

FL - Fotolia

What's FT???
Following the FT rule, Dreamstime would be DS, Shutterstock SR, Stockfresh SK and so on.

There are 2 words: foto and lia. BTW, these are differently colored...

It must have something also to do with how we pronounce it. I dont pronounce it "foto-lia". more "fotolllia"

English isn't your mother tongue though is it? (judging from your other post where you described your female cousin as "he"). SR and SK make no sense at all. Then again, try to find any rules in English that make sense.

there's a lot of people wishing there was a "dislike" button on fb though.

I listen to foreign music when I don't want to be too distracted - anything I don't know the words to.

otherwise I don't have a favourite, but I'm loving this thread.

I got noise cancelling headphones for xmas: a must for any photoshopping mum. :)

I don't use ps for all images; sometimes I can tweak in ACR and be happy with it. however, I made myself a set of actions that is now a one click tweak and 90% of my images get that. It's not overly time consuming to go into ps, click on the action, wait 5 seconds, double check, then save.

for people you still have to go in and remove blemishes, no one is immune, from my young kids with their scabs and bruises, to models with blotchy skins and blemishes, to oldies who benefit from a little airbrushing....

perhaps it would be better that we only had a set number of + & -'s to hand out? then they might be used more wisely.
although that would also stop us freely sharing the love, which is not a good thing.

In my house now we have a new habit of saying "minus 1" when ppl do things wrong, but it's pretty tongue in cheek.

the bonus of living on the other side of the world, I slept through all that drama and all is well.

Just had an unexpected sale at Zazzle (I put my photos on everything possible there, because you never know what will sell!)........

An iPad case with a whole wheat bread background.

are you serious? someone bought that for their ipad case? maybe they were an organic baker?

my doggie pic keeps on selling, 6 sales since the 20th. I've now scrambled through the rest of them looking for any others that might be as good.

I haven't tried yet but can you copy n paste the kw into the metadata? it's all good and well to offer a kw service but we still need kws done and put into the metadata.

frankly i'm tetchy over the lack of words in the ss dictionary, "colour" being one that I often get caught up on!

Too dang cold here.  We're nearly finished packing.  Probably leave tomorrow; maybe Friday.  Headed for Florida -- destination, Key West!
Pulling the RV with unplanned stops along the way.  Stops in Everglades on the way in and coming out are planned (extended stay) stops.
Hope to increase the nature, wildlife, landscape ports but the primary objective is FUN... Warm Fun.   8)

Nice! "Too dang cold" hey... we have 40 degrees Celsius today, 44 tomorrow here! Too dang hot... :) But then thats Australia in summer
MM, are you in Perth? or perhaps Melbourne? (they've got hot weather, suckers)

It's wonderful and breezy up here on the sunshine coast, and it may well be in the 30s but how would you know? :D it's bliss.

The worst part about a sunshine break and my warning to the OP: the warm weather makes your brain turn to mush and you slowly dissolve into a wonderful lifestyle of lying on the couch reading a book, to lying in bed reading a book, to fetching fish n chips from the shops, opening a bottle of wine, followed by a lazy swim and more lying on the couch. My goal to add 200 pics to my port during this holiday is not looking solid anymore...

Newbie Discussion / Re: Workflow Advice
« on: January 02, 2013, 20:12 »
I am just getting started, and this thread helps a lot.  The idea of a spread sheet is great, but transfering / entering file names gets old really fast.  Does anyone know of a easy/quick way to do this on a Mac?  I use Lightroom, and Photoshop.

Thanks

outsource it to a 12year old in exchange for a bottle of coke.
works a treat in my house :D

backlighting is often nicer with these, and if done with a reflector on a cloudy day will give a nice result.
I wouldn't even touch the flower category, unless I had some genius unique idea.

SS .51
iS 2.34
DT 2.09
DP 2.15
123 .55

those figures (of my top 5) look good thanks to a few nice ELs (xmas pics) so probably will dip right down again next month.
it's easier to get higher figures with a smaller port?

SS still outsold everyone but iS.

why can't they just say, "look, we hate it and frankly, you can do better"
or maybe a bit softer " we're just not that into it"
FT does that.

they say something about aesthetics, which is a bit insulting when their site is not up there in user-friendliness.

@ Oldhand: At our 2.800 sqm compound are several residential and commercial buildings constructed. At present there are 7 households with about 25 persons aged 1-84 years living there. Plus several pigs, dogs (Dobermann, English Bulldog, Rottweiler and Labrador plus mixtures of all...), cats, chicken, roosters, rabbits, pigeons, ducks, frogs, lizards and sometimes a snail. It`s like a zoo. One of our youngsters is studying vetenarian and takes care of all animals. Unfortunately there is no caretaker for some of the noisy and drunk humans...

your use of the word "compound" makes it sound Amish or Mormon... until the alcohol bit. :)
could be fun to try to do some pics of animals lined up.

The other day I registered at 123rf and submitted 10 pics which have been rejected by FT. I was very much suprised that all 10 have been accepted by 123rf.
But 123rd was accepting the photo. Now I am confused if it is realy a lens problem. What is your opinion?

Cheers, Jochen

you'll learn that diff agencies have diff likes and dislikes. 123 is pretty easy to get accepted on. when I first started submitting I uploaded some snaps to them and they were all accepted, I was so happy. zero sales on those images though, due to lcv (low commercial value).

you may also learn that despite your pics being a "byproduct" of your real work, you end up spending a lot of time on them and the return doesn't justify it (compared to your mailorder business).

Also, the past two years both Christmas and New Years were on a weekend day.  I think both holidays being on a Tuesday this year was a detriment to sales as it provided more opportunities for folks to take more time off from work.  Just my theory, but I think it makes sense.

this is very true - and quite nice for us holidaymakers :)
anyone selling into asia shouldn't have been hit at all, but I guess for most of us Europe/US is the main market.

On which site did you experience the greatest increase in gross earnings?
Choose one of the following answers.

compared to what? if this is my first (real) year they've all gone up.

the end bit was weird, and kept saying my email was already subscribed, no matter which boxes were checked or unchecked. then it locked me out.
(no biggie, I don't want to have to post a reflector to Australia)
