The US has double-taxation treaties with about 70 countries, including China, India, Russia, Indonesia, all or nearly all of the EU.
You know that for contributors in some treaty countries the rate is not zero - ie taxes are still deducted by the USA. All other things being equal, the ideal would be to deal with agencies based in countries which do not impose these taxes.

@Baldrick
Your point about the taxes only being levied on a small proportion of sales is useful. I am surprised that only 10% of your SS sales are US and wonder whether that is typical. I think I have always assumed that the US market represented a much larger slice of SS's business.
With respect to what people would otherwise be required to pay in taxes, the picture is much more variable and layered depending on the how and where. For many people living in non treaty countries any US deduction will represent an additional take - since they would either not be taxed at all on this income or else, more likely, they will then be further taxed by their own authorities.
I agree that US tax should not be treated as if it were an agency commission. But it makes no difference: Many people are going to get a better deal on those sales if they can make them through an agency which is not based in the US.
But - to reiterate - I take your point about the take being actually only about 3% in your case. That is useful information. So thanks.

never had to fill in a form @ IS and could be wrong (was just referencing an earlier post)
Perhaps I was not clear enough: The point is that contributors to sites like SS and BS which are only US based and do not have international offices are required to pay US taxes if they are from countries which do not have a tax treaty with the US.

At one point I would have said - sure if you want to support .28 per dl instead of .38 per dl, but since SS seems to want to do that themselves it might not really make of a difference if you are getting lowballed from SS/BS
There is also the fact that a growing number of contributors internationally would be taxed at a whopping 30% because they come from countries which do not have a tax treaty with the USA. $0.38 - 30% = $0.266 ---- and even less at Bigstock

Not everyone has a DSLR with them everywhere they go.
I guess if given the choice and with a DSLR in your hand, obviously you'll shoot with the DSLR. But what's the saying, "The best camera is the one you have with you," or something like that...
I believe that it is analogous to the introduction of the original 35mm miniature format in the 1920s - and also its adoption by the world of fashion in the 1960s (which was a youthful reaction against the formality and gloss of the 1950s). iPhone and handheld natural light smaller camera photography in general very much suits the informal sort of look and feel which so clearly chimes in the current economy and the uncertain political and global environment. People are capturing reassuringly informal and off-beat images with small cameras which they would never get walking around with giant zoom like a tourist. If you look at the history of photographs and how they are used, the sort of pictures which are current always reflect the times.

I hope Symbiostock is a big success Lots of hearts have gone into Symbiostock. Anyone who dared to question whether it is going to be a success would certainly see their post voted into invisibility.

Latest iPhone (the 5S) looks like the business. Details about the camera at: http://www.apple.com/iphone-5s/camera/But don't buy on technical specs - also consider what apps are available. I still have the 4S and like it very much too. If money is short I would recommend a used 4S. Check that the lens is not scratched. And talking about phone camera pictures -- have a look at the wonderful work on VSCO grid: http://vsco.co/grid

It's an insect flying...
yep. Very close to the camera - much much closer to us than the bird and hence out of focus.
or very far
If you focus on a bird at that distance I should have thought that everything to infinity would be in focus. Only foreground stuff would be out of focus.

... oh no wait! I voted this one down too. Sorry. What a rubbish answer. Thanks for the support. Next time you get hit with something I will make sure to stick that in your face too.
ETA: but I also voted down the post you were responding to. So it was equal. itchy trigger finger

down voting looks like people are agreeing with the agencies.
No it doesn't. It means they disagree with what you wrote. That's how the voting works for me. For example I voted you down in the post where you seemed to suggest that Symbiostock offers an effective alternative to Alamy. The reason I voted you down is because I disagree. You are not being realistic or thinking about what Alamy provides customers if you genuinely believe that. FWIW that is the only one of your posts on this thread which I have voted down. On other threads I could equally vote you up for saying stuff which I agree with.

The D-bags who should be apologizing have absolutely no shame and will never admit they're wrong.
Seems like all sides of the debate are completely intransigent. And yet it must be obvious that this is theatre and that there will be a compromise at the last possible moment so that everyone can claim victory.

Where does it say that? I don't think it does. Not specifically. It's an assumption based on the diagram - and based on my own experience of transferring money between my current GBP account and my account in France and vice versa. Never a fee but I get charged on the conversion. Perhaps I am wrong. @Lisafx - understood. Yep that's the number which matters.

Yes, this is definitely the case. Not only have sales volumes diminished, but ....
I don't believe we definitely know that sales volumes have diminished ? They might have increased. There are many more contributors now and some huge and varied portfolios. People with fewer or less varied pictures may be getting a smaller share of exactly the same sales volume.

Alamy is listed in the UK, an EU country. My understanding of the legal situation is that they are not allowed to charge more for bank transfers to the EU than for transfers within the UK. By not charging UK-UK transfers but charging UK-EU transfers they might violate this rule. I am not completely sure about this, though. But Alamy might want to double check this, in order to avoid a formal complaint
Where did you get this idea from ? It's not just something that you think should or might be true is it ? Why should they not charge a different rate given that their bank will bill them a different rate ?

I'm not wasting any more time on this thread.
You have not demonstrated that Paypal is more expensive than either banks or Skrill when the exchange rate and all charges are taken into account.
1073
« on: October 15, 2013, 11:34 »
carry on getting ripped off by PayPal every time you exchange currency.
Can you say for certain that a Paypal exchange (even including any fee) is definitely always more expensive in total (and taking into account the rate used) vs receiving the money directly to a bank account or to Skrill ? The Skrill rate may not be as good for example. Some banks may charge to make a conversion on receipt of funds - equally it is not clear to me that the bank rate is necessarily better than the Paypal rate. Could you give us a breakdown of the numbers please.

It speaks to sales volume dropping
It could be down to lower prices and sales being spread amongst many more contributors - so everyone gets less. There are definitely many many more contributors. And there is definitely downward pressure on the prices which are actually negotiated.

Make sure that your public liability insurance is adequate and covers events. You will be working with the public but cannot assume that you will be covered by the event's own insurance unless that is specifically contracted.
(and the event insurance may have conditions which would exclude you)
