New Sites - General / Re: Front Page

I've stopped uploading there.  Seems a complete waste of time. Shame as when the sales do come in the commisions are reasonable.

I wonder how many microstock reviewers (not on SS particularly as i think they are serious enough but in general) would recognize a photo of for example Robert Frank if you showed them one. Do they know who Man Ray is? In short wondering if they have serious photography training and interest or if they just know how to check for noise, purple fringe, etc. What sort of tests do the agencies run to choose appropriate reviewers?
Why on earth would they need to recognize a photo by Robert Frank or know who Man Ray is or even need serious photography training just to be a stock reviewer?   They are quaility controllers and that is all they need to be.

All I know for sure is that so far in June, 2012 I've earned less than 15% of what I made on FT in June, 2010.  >:(   FT doesn't seem to give a flying proverbial that they are messing with people's livelihoods.
Me too, I am at just over 15%.   It has made a huge difference to the way I live.

Has anyone noticed a positive change in their DT sales in the last few days.

I'm now on my third day of doubled sales (both quantity and overall earnings).  One of those "faucet turning on" moments.  Maybe there was another best match shift this week that boosted best sellers?
Yes the tap seems to have been turned back on for me since the 17th

I think today is a unique example for me at DT.  Usually sales are pretty average lately, but today less than half what I would normally make on a recent weekday.  I checked my search positions and don't see anything amiss.  Might be some sort of technical issues.
I hope that you are right Lisa as today is like a weekend day for me after having  a pretty good week.

I haven't any sale on DT for more than 5 days!
What is happening there?
I think there has been yet another search change as my files have picked back up in the last few days.
And totally crashed again today.  I don't remember ever having such a bad day mid week!!!!

Keywording, at best, is less than perfect.  Easter is a Holiday; Christmas is a Holiday.  A search for "Easter Holiday" is likely to return ALL holidays ... if they are properly keyworded with "Holiday."
Calling this Spam is the cause of much of our disagreements.
And, I have noticed that many of us are much more eager to criticize others than review our own shortcomings.

Yes  agree with your examples but Christmas trees are never valentines day by any stretch of the imagination.

Yes. The button is tied to the search terms, which is part of the problem. If you search for a red apple and hit the flag button instead of the add to lightbox button it is flagged for the words red and apple.

That explains a lot - thanks.  I've had images flagged for keywords twice and both times the "offending" keyword was fine.  One was an underwater picture taken at the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, flagged for the keyword "Australia".  I forget the other one.  Both times the flagger had no images in their portfolio, so I thought they were someone out to get a keyword-reporting bonus.  However, with your information it seems more likely they were a buyer who just hit the wrong button - makes more sense.  I responded with a note both times and never heard anything back.  I try to be careful with my keywords but occasionally get a bad one in there, especially if copying from a similar image, but so far haven't been flagged for one that really was bad.
Most of my flags are from buyers - no uploads after joining the site a while ago.  Some people insult people that flag them but they could be shooting themselves in the foot if it is a buyer.  Also if somebody does a search of for instance a red apple and a green apple comes up the flag will show on both words although only one word is incorrect.
I sometimes flag when I see a search screwed up by a serial spammers.  I once flagged dozens of christmas images messing up a valentines's day search.   I can assure you that I couldn't care less about the couple of cents that you get but just don't want the buyers leaving the site in frustration.

I have just been and looked for one of my highest selling images using it's most relevant keyword.  It usually sold several times a day at FT and has about 2000 dls but I've just realized that I haven't seen it sell for ages.   On the dl search it comes in on the second page (20 a page),  but the relevant search where it used to be one of the first images I now can't even find it after going through about 10 pages.

On FT, is it not the case that higher ranks can set higher prices (the punter pays more as well as / instead of just a higher cut for the contributor)?  If so, is it not just possible that buyers are simply taking cost into account thus favouring the small timer?

I keep reading this, but it isn't borne out by my sales.  First off, since they began dropping images that haven't sold in 6 months (including seasonal ones) to 1 credit - and leaving them there even after they sell - , most emeralds, etc. probably have thousands of 1 credit images.  I know I do.

If the argument that customers are simply buying cheaper images is true, then I should be seeing a high proportion of my sales going to 1 credit files.  I'm not.  Vast majority of my sales are still on 2 credit images, both new and old.

In FT's case, the anecdotal evidence points overwhelmingly to the fact that the best match is favoring based on contributor rank, NOT image price.  Wish it wasn't so, but there you are.
That is exactly what I am seeing as well. My sales actually went up instead of down when I originally put them from 1 credit to 2 and at the moment I am selling new images and 2 credit images.

Tough or not, that's the deal you signed up for.

I get flags all the time on good keywords and usually it is somebody with no port so is almost definitely a buyer that clicks it by mistake. If the keyword is correct then there is nothing to worry about.

It doesn't necessarily need one.  It depends on how many prints of the book that they do.

I've just been through my last 4 pages using Sean's script and found one for 10c and one for 11c.  Pathetic!!!  I wish I hadn't looked.

Is there an easy way to see what an image has sold for at IS without clicking on each sale?   Pages open so slowly for me at IS that I never bother clicking to look at individual sales.

Use Sean's incredibly useful scripts:

Duh, thanks I had totally forgotten about that script.  I changed my computer last year and didn't re-install it.

I've noticed another complete turn around  in the last few days.   The new files have virtually stopped selling and old files are selling again.  Is anybody else experiencing this or is it just total coincidence.  Also seems to be a higher percentage of credit sales as opposed to subs

I am experiencing a dramatic decline  in sales on FT. i was wondering if it has something to do with one of these best match shifts again? my 7 day rank was usually around 600 to 700 but for last couple of months I guaranteed a good place below 5000 ,wow!!, all of a sudden customers decided not to my pics any more? I was wondering if it is only me?  BTW I've  got around 2K files there.
Are you uploading?  My sales are about 70% images that have been uploaded in the last month or two. There was definitely a drastic best match change about 3 weeks ago.

This is an old thread.  The origianl post was nearly 4 years ago.  Possibly a lot has changed in that time as the quality of micro has got better and better.

Wow must have dug down deep to find this 6 year old thread.

What Dt are willing to accept is besides the point really.  It is up to us to make sure that we have a valid release for each session.   If there is a problem it will be us that are asked to provide it not DT.

Me too. From 2006 through to 2012, every year is represented.
2006 x3
2007 x4
2008 x5
2009 x3
2010 x1
2011 x2
2012 x2
I wonder how buyers are finding some of those images.  One of the 2008 images only has 20 dls so it can't be  near the front of any search.
