Daneel, I don't see artifacts in your pictures, but I can see lots of dust on the phone and the microphone. Isolated images like these need to be cleaned up before submission; even if you get the images accepted, any potential buyers might be disappointed to find dust and that won't get you a good reputation.
Tom's advice is good - examine all your images thoroughly at 200% before deciding that you are happy.
Tom - IS reject more of my images than anyone else, but there is always a good reason, usually only noticeable at 100% or 200%. In the two months I've been there they have improved my photography no end. I now realise that some of my initial work was sloppy; the images I submit now are miles ahead of those in terms of finish and quality. So although it is frustrating, in the end IS will make me a better stock photographer.
By the way Daneel - you have accumulated an incredibly good portfolio using that Canon S3. Well done.

Nice to see your rush of enthusiasm Tina. Yes, it's amazing what can happen at SS.
I joined SS only about a month ago at the strong suggestion of Tom from this forum. I've managed to upload about 150 images with only 7 rejections, so all the worries about quality, noise etc simply aren't there (well not for me anyway).
Even more remarkable is that in my first month I have had 734 sales. Yes, I know that sounds ridiculous and I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes.
Someone on the SS forums made the comment 'SS is the only place where a contributor can get an immediate sense of success'. A good and valid comment I think.
Good luck and keep uploading to SS regularly.

I wouldn't get too excited if I were you. Putting my other hat on as an analyst of long term cycles, trends, harmonics, economics and humanity, there is every probability that between 2012 and 2018 the world will be engaged in either recession prompted by food price inflation, depression caused by a rapid drop in asset values (including property) and/or possibly a six year war.
The possibility of interest rates jumping to 12% or even 16% post March/July 2012 is very high.
There isn't likely to be much international air travel happening in 2016. Tickets for the Olympics will be cheap.
Sorry to be such a doom and gloom merchant, but there you are; better to be realistic.
Happy days.....

Thanks for the info everyone.
Kosmik - your 80 downloads producing 100th rank is interesting.
I know that over at IS the top ranked people sell somewhere between 500 and 2000 images per week.
So that makes an interesting comparison between the two agencies.
Nonetheless, if FT can sell 80 images a week from your portfolio, that's 400 a month and shouldn't be sneezed at.

Well I can't see the reflection of the photographer, and I think the horizon would be refracted away by the glass anyway.
But I am surprised at how many images I see where the photographer has failed to straighten the horizon.

Thanks for the info everyone.
Sharply - your 40 a week gives me something to aim for, and it seems that there is lots of potential above that given your ranking. That's comforting because it shows FT are actually making the sales.
Kosmik - can you share with us roughly how many downloads in a week get you to 100th position?

Well I took the advice of many contributors here and a coupla weeks ago started uploading to FT again. I must say I have been pleasantly surprised, and with only 120 images in my portfolio so far I have achieved 15 sales in just over a week. A good start I think.
Those 15 sales put me at something like 1367th place over a week. That's a useful number as it tells me that there are 1366 other photographers who got more than my number in the week. It also talls me that FT are making healthy sales. But it doesn't tell me how much others are doing.
Can the contributors in this forum give an indication of their placing over a week and how many downloads that represents. It would be useful for me to know that, say, 50 downloads is position 766 or something, and 100 downloads is position 250 or whatever.

Yes, Sharply, I think one should try to identify what sells best at each agency; for instance I have a number of images of dollar bills I took recently because the dollar is falling in value; dollars being flushed down the toilet, dollars in the form of a toilet roll, dollars being cut with scissors etc, all intended to show diminishing value. The customers at SS are buying these shots in some volume every day, whereas none of the customers at IS seem interested. My 'dollars in the form of a toilet roll' has sold 50 copies at SS in the last four weeks, but not a single sale at IS.
This suggests that the customers at SS are newspapers and web sites, all of whom are probably running stories on the dollar's depreciation at the moment, and using my images to show the currency's worthless value.
The customers at IS aren't interested because that isn't their market.

Yes, SS seems to have an eye for what will sell. I've noticed that 'out of the box' images sell very well on SS; by that I mean images that can just be bought and used; the complete package if you like.
Perhaps the customers at SS are web sites and newspapers etc who just want to buy a finished piece and use it 'as is'.
The opposite seems to apply at IS, whose customers appear to be the design community; a browse through the designers section shows how backgrounds and partial images are bought and used to 'make up' a finished brochure or pamphlet.
On SS the best sellers are 'packaged products', whereas the best sellers list at IS includes lots of backgrounds and vector shape designs.
Anyway, that is how it appears to me with my limited experience.....

Yeah, Easter. Remember that in the UK, most of Europe and in Australia, the Easter weekend involves public holidays on the Friday and Monday. Many workers take either the week before or the week after off so they can get an extended holiday for just four days work vacation time. So last week was a slow down and this week is likely to be slow too.

Percentages don't work properly on calculations like this. I look at it this way:
The increase for subscribers is $40. If every subscriber downloads the maximum of 750 per month the 'income' to SS is (750 x 25c = 5.3c per image). So on this basis SS could increase commission payments by 5c and retain a small operating profit increase of 0.3c per image.
However, the bet SS is making is that most subscribers won't achieve their maximum download limit. Let's assume that the average subscriber downloads only half the maximum ie 375 images per month. Then the 'income' to SS has increased by 10.6c per image. On this basis SS could easily afford 5c extra per image or even 8c extra taking the download payment to 33c and still retain increased operating profits.
Of course SS as a start up business will have planned to book operating losses in the early years with profits to come later. It may have already reached the 'need profits' stage.
But it seems that a 5c increase is affordable, with 8c a possibility if SS wants to send an important message. It all depends on the subscriber usage numbers which of course only SS knows.

I am seeing lots of comments from some of the old hands at IS that they are experiencing a disappointing trend in sales.
At the same time the approvals list has dropped significantly from a peak of 30,000 to a current level of 17,000 (the lowest I have seen in months).
All of this is happening at a time when SS and DT seem to be accellerating (DT approvals list still 40,000).
Is this just a temporary thing or a sign of something else? Anyone have a view?

Yes, interesting articles. Thanks for posting.
Interested that FT sold 4 million images last year. That's very low considering the headline image numbers. Also, as they only employ 18 people and all but three work from home, this explains why they don't get the sales volume; sales need investment in marketing and promotion etc etc. They don't appear to be doing much of that.
The Shutterstock guy makes the most sense. Interesting that he's identified a 'middle ground' for mid priced images. Perhaps a development to come.

Had a quick look. Round neck T shirts are priced at around $29.50, Polo shirts are in the $49.50 to $59.50 range.

CJP, EVERYTHING is charged at twice the price in the UK!
Last September I emigrated here to Australia. We pay the equivalent of 40p for petrol. And people here complain about the prices! When I tell local people what I used to pay in England they are speechless.
In January the Sydney Morning Herald ran a front page piece warning Australians who might be planning a trip to England to be aware of the high prices; the article was prompted by the massive increase in tube fares making a one station stop in Zone 1 4 if I recall correctly. A 33% increase.
I can eat out at a great restaurant almost anywhere for 40; in Australia, France, Italy, Hong Kong; yet in London that same meal will cost 120.
London is now officially the most expensive City in the world for almost everything, with public transport right at the top of the list and almost laughably more expensive than anywhere else.
In my last few years in the UK I found I was buying more and more things on the internet primarily from Europe where prices are often half of those locally in England. Ha, even medicines are a joke; I occasionally use a Ventolin Inhaler; in England I would get one at a so-called prescription discount at 7, but years ago I found I could walk into any pharmacy in France and buy the same thing over the counter for 3.
To be fair to product retailers, they have to charge much higher prices to try to recoup the high transportation, storage, distribution and wage costs.
Good luck with your search!

The review thing is for others to give a rating on images if they wish to. Not sure if its important.
Tom, you'll find that the biggest selling images on IS are completely different to SS etc. Have a look at the top selling list and then browse through the 'designers' section.
IS appears to be the only agency who pay as much attention to designers as they do to photographers.
