Cameras / Lenses / Re: Canon 500D/T1i (17-85mm kit) vs. Nikon D90 (18-105mm kit)« on: February 28, 2010, 22:58 »
Here are a few differences that would matter to me. (I shoot with a Nikon D300.)
The D90 has a dedicated top display for exposure information. The D90 has two command dials, which make changing Manual settings much easier (back for shutter speed, front for aperture). The D90 has a much higher resolution display. The D90 permits you to set White Balance to Kelvin color temperature, very convenient for studio lighting. On the D5000 you'd have to have a gray card and capture a custom White Balance. The D90's pentaprism provides a brighter and larger viewfinder display. The D90 can control other Nikon flashes using Commander Mode. The D90 has a DOF Preview button. 1153
Crestock.com / Re: What the heck is going on with Crestock?« on: February 26, 2010, 20:03 »
I gave up on uploading a while ago. I'd been uploading a few at a time whenever I got a sale, to the point where I had 1000 images in the queue. Eventually they were all reviewed, and all were rejected. Pretty obvious that they never look at them seriously if they couldn't find a single one worth hosting. I uploaded a few more after that, which have been sitting in the queue for months. As surprised as I was to get my last payout after three months of waiting, I'll be even more surprised if Crestock ever returns to life.

General - Top Sites / Re: Oh no, please! Not Canstock!« on: February 26, 2010, 13:00 »
Agreed. Over the last twelve months, BigStock has generated 6.3% of my total. CanStock's only 1.4%, just behind Crestock. Heck, with this month's performance, Veer has already passed both CanStock and Crestock with 2.2% of the total. (18.9% for the month, 2.2% over the past twelve.)

Software doesn't break from wear, Warren, but it can break when conditions arise that it wasn't set up to handle. Sometimes new modules are added and they interact with older modules in ways that weren't tested and have subtle bugs. Or there are timing-related problems, which aren't that uncommon in big transactional systems. These can show up infrequently, which makes them hard to debug, but can occur more often as the system gets busier. More traffic often reveals bugs that were there from the beginning but just didn't reveal themselves.

I had a $2 download on Feb 19th. The one before that was on the 1st. I had seven in January, plus two $3 downloads.

I'm having a pretty typical month at BigStock, maybe a little down from last year but up a bit from January. No decline to speak of.

Veer / Re: 9 sales today at Veer« on: February 22, 2010, 19:02 »
Four for me, all Large, all non-US, $3.50 each. With the ELs I got earlier this month, Veer is outperforming even SS at the moment. Sure would be nice if it keeps up.

Adobe Stock / Re: The Latest from Chad regarding Purchase incentives and commission structure« on: February 20, 2010, 14:36 »Sure, we don't see how many sales get refunded at BigStock due to the 7 day waiting period... That doesn't make sense. The waiting period only applies to how much of our balance we can request, not to when it's reported to us. We see sales as soon as they happen, and would see refunds if they were deducted from our sales. If it didn't work that way, if our reported balance doesn't include sales within the last 7 days, we'd be able to request the entire balance they did report. Keep in mind that a big part of the problem with the way Fotolia handles bad transactions is that there's no statute of limitations. I've had deductions from transactions that were more than a year old. Did it really take them that long to notice? 1162
iStockPhoto.com / Re: Canister Changes Postponed« on: February 20, 2010, 13:01 »
I'm almost disappointed. I just reached my gold canister with a little over a week to spare. the only difference for me is a few more upload slots, but I was wondering if I'd make it in time. All that stress for nothing! Or at least for not much...

Just got mine as well. It only took three and a half months, and I'm only two thirds of the way to another payout. Wonder how long that one will take.

Veer / Re: Wow! Major sales at Veer!« on: February 17, 2010, 15:18 »
I don't agree with your assessment, Alisa. My first encounter with Fotolia was rather unpleasant (nine rejections from my first ten, with the lone acceptance a Photoshop effort based on scanned content), and it took a while before I tried again. I've never been happy with their review process, and of course far less so as they've cut my percentage twice and pretty much guaranteed I'll never see an increase. They make me money and their upload process isn't too painful, so I persevere.
Veer's an unknown quantity. I had so many rejections among my model shots that I stopped uploading them. And yet... the three extended licenses yesterday were all models. So I'll try uploading some more, and when many/most are rejected, well, I'll hope what's left makes money. I think they're wrong in their rejections, but hey, it's their site. I'll upload if they get me sales, and stop if they stop. There are sites I prefer and sites I don't particularly like. But this is business, so I make my choices based on a cost/benefit basis. But not entirely, or I'd have given up the whole thing long ago as worse than minimum wage. 1166
Veer / Re: Wow! Major sales at Veer!« on: February 16, 2010, 19:26 »Congrats!!! I haven't gotten with Veer...I always heard they were fairly slow...am I correct? They've been slow for me; $28 in six months. And their reviews are even less forgiving than Crestock, if such a thing is possible. I suspect today's a fluke that won't be repeated soon, but I'll be happy to be proven wrong. 1167
Veer / Wow! Major sales at Veer!« on: February 16, 2010, 18:13 »
Doing my way-too-many-times-a-day check of the agencies when I stopped dead. My total revenue at Veer had jumped an order of magnitude! Three medium sized sales, followed by three extended licenses for each of the same images. Total revenue: $110.25. Let's do that a few more times, shall we?

For what it's worth, the iStock pictures I've opted into partner programs are all on ThinkStock. Nothing from SX has shown up there yet. 1169

I couldn't get in at all yesterday with Safari, even after deleting cookies. I did get in on the first try with Firefox. This morning, it's back to working with Safari. I'm guessing a programming glitch on their end.

General Stock Discussion / Re: The stock site you recommend to buyers« on: February 11, 2010, 01:49 »
How competitive are Shutterstock's On Demand licenses? I'd be inclined to recommend SS because of the way they run their business, as well as the size of their collection. Heck, maybe I'd recommend BigStock; they're part of SS now, and they've been relatively drama-free.
