it's a random and rare moment when you see a glimmer of Old Blighty left in Canada.

Doing some "pixel peeping" I got more sharp images with monopod and handheld with IS OFF.

we did similar test when i was at college and got the same results. the VR motor thingy can cause vibrations.

you can just leave "tiger" as "tiger" though, without the extra tick marks.

I'm quite pleased to see both UK & US spelling most of the time. As discussed in another thread, I sell more (on SS) to Europe than the US so this is important.

1154
is that the same as "sunflower seeds"? those giant black ones we buy for the chooks?
Yes, but without the black or black-and-white husk.
The difference is commercially important, because although more expensive, there is no mess (wild birds discard the husk which then causes mess and possibly spreads diseases).
that's the type of notes I put in for the reviewer. think how much more they learn about stuff that way.

you can batch things using the template feature, which I'm getting my head around. Yes, extra work to make a template, but I did a few for different price points. still a few extra clicks but I can't see any pesky categories so that's good. (although there is mention of categories, I haven't seen any, so i shall remain in blissful ignorance so long as the files go through ok)

perhaps we should ask them to provide us with a copy of their passport? :D

Lets all remember this is a made up event just as the Mayan Calender. The idea that we the consumers will stop buying products and services in inane. I own two shopping centers and my tenants are having the best business in years.
you must be a realistic landlord. Here in Australia retail is dire, with most just paying wages and rents, which are outrageously high.

It's another one of those sites where you have to learn how they do stuff, which is diff to everyone else.

In the marketing world that is a BIG no-no; customers don't want to have to learn how to use your site. Unless you've got some super awesome way of doing stuff, don't make it different just for the sake of being different.

I'm getting the hang of it, but I've had unfinished xmas files there for over a week that needed more editing, oops. i will call Pond5 my 2013 project.

even when using DeepMeta the kw still gets reassigned in the upload process, so i have to go back in at some point and manually check them all and remove the wrong association. yes, it's v time consuming.
they do take suggestions for terms, and a while back I was sending heaps through but I kind of gave up, they should pay us for being so helpful, I'm not here to fix their site for free.

1161
I agree it's annoying but I am quite glad they take kw so seriously.

If you have a picture of a dog bowl then words like nose, whisker, hair, tail, bark etc just don't belong there, and yet ppl just pour them in. It's so frustrating when you're searching for images to see so many that don't relate to the search terms.  And who is to blame? Us actually.

i've recently uploaded images of xmas baubles hanging in a sheoak tree at the beach, and the number of images that also come up when you search for "xmas baubles at beach"... you get candy canes, starfish, santa, people, santa hat... and even a pair of sandals somehow is in there before my image, with "christmas" as a keyword!! how did that even get through is a mystery to me.

I also had no idea fotolia had rankings (although it's only my first year). I find their site tricky to find stats so I usually don't look often. And right now the page seems to be down...

brilliant. I suspect I'll have use for this in the next month. today I couldn't log in to my online banking account when I needed to. I should charge them for the inconvenience.

there's a Coke ad on a phone booth that's on my school run every day, that's clearly an iPhone style shot of a "teen at rock festival" type image. ugh, it's soooo grainy and out of focus, it hurts my eyes to look at it. But I suspect I'm in the minority? Most ppl prob just glance at it and assume it's a cool pic.

Newbie Discussion / Re: Hello all
« on: December 04, 2012, 05:40 »
you got a few big guns to come along and say hello, that's impressive!
I still call myself "new" after 8 months here. I shall do so until my my port is 2K+
(I'm not new to photography though, and it may be a hard curve for you to try both at once. microstock is way harsher than college, or any of the newspapers or magazines I've contributed to). And these forums are not like others where 80% seem to be amateurs talking nicely to each other.

Just warning you.
Put your big girl pants on and you'll learn so much from the best of the best.

You should return the funds to Getty as soon as possible __ after deducting your 'Administration and Handling Fee' of an uncannily similar amount.
seriously, we should all +5 this one. I've been saying similar stuff to my bank and other finance places of late. when I stuff up they charge me $10, when they stuff up they say "sorry". Not good enough!
seriously, we need to start fighting back with our own BS "Admin Fee", in all aspects of life.

No youre very wrong. Its destruction for a purpose, i.e. its done on purpose and for a reason and the IS admin cant do anything about it because they are themselves just minor players in all this. Got nothing to do with it.

So far the strategy has worked out superb. Getty has got them exactly where they want them and frankly it might all be for the better? after all as independants we were not treated much better before, were we?
Personally I am much rather in the hands of Getty then the present wobbling IS admin.
Besides at the moment IS, is selling very well for me. Cant complain at all.

LOL, that's the most self-contradictory post I ever read on these forums, at least since Lagereek had his meltdown and disappeared.

Hang on... You look familiar!

Sigh!  the ususal little microstockers neewbie glib. ::)
well, it's a change from the usual "ignore the newbie" attitude

Not you!  like your port btw. :)
you should see my etchings sometime.

canon lenses seem so much bigger than Nikon's. I once got to use a 400mm prime - belonged to my teacher at college, and as I was one of a few Nikon students he let me use on an excursion, (plus me being the mature age student and owner of an X5 he may have trusted me more). I had to keep telling my classmates to get out of the way as I was shooting 4m behind them, lol. lovely lens.

I wonder when Microsoft will end up the same? Maybe Apple will eat them up...

Actually except for some Mac blind followers (and the fact that it is MUCH better for graphics), and the myth that Macs work better and don't get viruses, Apple would already be out of business if Microsoft hadn't propped them up.

ouch, them's fighting words

Here my thoughts on this topic- It's sort of like 4 cylinder car with and without turbo. Yeah, the regular 4 cylinder can do 90% of what you require of the car but the turbo sure is nice to have for the extra power or speed when you want or need it. The IS or VR are nice to have when you do need them. Therefore, if you can afford them why not!

Yes, if you are trying to justify the extra premium most would agree you are not going to get the most bang for your buck. Just like paying extra for F/1.4 instead of F/4 on a zoom lens- most will not use the F/1.4 and the F/1.4 has flaws at that extreme range as well.  The sweet spot on most lenses are from F/5.6 to F/16. But if money isn't the primary objective than why not...

T

LOL, didn't you write something in another thread about not being so mad on buying gear? That should extend to this obsessing too. :P

I can't say what I feel. I have a 80-200 nikon lens without it, cos I couldn't afford the other one (70-200) at the time. I use that lens mostly with a tripod cos it's so heavy, else I shoot at 1/350 where I can, which seems to keep me out of trouble. I'd certainly be keen on the VR version at some stage, but I'm not into buying equipment unnecessarily.

General Stock Discussion / Re: What are your goals for 2013?
« on: December 04, 2012, 00:28 »
It's still a bit early for this discussion.  Let's have another thread late on New Year's Eve when I'm sitting at the computer with a glass of bubbly.

Sounds good but my answer will be the same.

Microstock or otherwise, what are your goals for 2013?

I do agree with Lisa's discovery. I figured the same for myself a few years back. (and why people here sometimes criticism me) Everything isn't about how to monetize and market everything you take. I was driving down the highway thinking, can I shoot that, will that be good stock. And I said to myself, I'm not seeing things anymore. I don't enjoy nature, and the fresh air. I'm not enjoying the scenery or the ride. I'm only thinking MONEY!

actually I find I see the world differently thanks to my photographer's eye. I see the way light dances across the back of leaves, or even the back of a grubby fence, and i am delighted. Somedays I feel like I was blind before. Somedays I think others are blind. Somedays I think "it can't be this easy, I see the light there, looks amazing, shoot it". Some days it's not easy and on those days I am frustrated.

I love that everything I do/buy can be photographed for stock. I'm looking at a huge pile of receipts and stuff (doing tax work in my office) and I think, "that coud be a cool shot", so even during the drudgery of office work I see something that would work and it cheers me up. I don't always shoot it, but I capture the moment in my head and I feel good for it.

perhaps in a few more years I'll feel differently?

Here's a better idea: tell Apple they are using their logo for iPhoto on their website. Maybe Apple will move in on them faster.
