Interesting comments from everyone.  I've just taken a look through the latest exclusive uploads, and - yes - there are lots of holiday snaps and many images which are borderline quality (IMHO).

It remains the case that iStock appears to have the customers.  Where else can an image get 1,000, 2,000 or even 3,000 downloads in a three month period (looking at the top downloads list).

As a matter of interest eendicot, can I ask why you have decided to upload to only DT and no other agency?

Your 'starry night' is excellent BTW.

Hey, calm down everyone.  You know I was talking in a general sense.  Sheesh...

Look at it this way.  iStock has 1.5 mill images accepted out of a total of 3 mill sent in.  Someone has had to pay good money to examine and reject half of 3 mill.

A diamond exclusive is allowed to submit 200 images a week.  Why?  Because they hardly need looking at.

A 30% profit from a diamond exclusive is a more valuable and reliable business asset than a 70% profit from the other 80% of contributors.

Marco I couldn't diagree with your statement more.  Exclusives are THE profit centre for iStock, and for any other agency that chooses to run an exclusive contract.  In any business 80% of the profits are generated by 20% of the customers etc etc.  The exclusives give a constant supply of high quality unique images, highly saleable and commercial.  In stark contrast the non-exclusives are made up of thousands of weekend and holiday snappers many of whom bombard the agency with images that get examined and rejected.  Think of the cost of examining and rejecting all those hundreds of thousands of images.  That's money down the toilet.  That doesn't happen with exclusives.  Many of the exclusives run their stock as a business; they provide the best and only the best, generally speaking.

The thing that sets iStock apart from the rest is its exclusives.  THEY give it unique images to market and sell and do special deals NOT the non exclusives.

And another point: how many high quality exclusive type photographers are there in the world?  Fewer than some people think I reckon.  There will be a battle to get the exclusives and it wouldn't surprise me at all if in a year or two an agency like iStock closes its doors to anyone who is NOT exclusive.

No - its the exclusives (generally speaking) that drive the profits and the marketing.  Its the OTHERS that are not profitable.

Just my opinion.

DT seems to have died over the last few days.  Anyone else getting the same impression?  Or is it just me?

General Stock Discussion / Re: Your worst performer?
« on: March 13, 2007, 13:38 »
I am only at IS, DT and SS.

I closed my accounts with 123 and StockXpert.  Suspended uploads to BigStock a month ago and will close that account once the 90 days have run.

I would rather focus on the best (for me) and devote extra time to dreaming up ideas and creating good photos to submit.

1183
Well, ever since I started looking at this microstock business a few months ago I have believed that prices and commissions would rise over the next two or three years.  The days of the 25c are numbered.  It is just a question of time.

Two comments in SS's release above are important.  One suggests that they are raising prices (and hence commissions) in order to continue to attract the best images.  That suggests a commission increase is indeed on the cards.

The other remark is their 'supply of fresh images in each search'.  This ties in with observations made on this board that once images stop being 'fresh' their sales die away.

iStockPhoto.com / My first EL at IS...
« on: March 12, 2007, 23:12 »
Well, having uploaded my first picture to IS on Feb 5th, I've now got my first EL overnight, generating a commission of $10.

Although nice to have the $10, it is somewhat galling that someone now has the right to print 500,000 copies of my picture and all I get for my hard work is a measly $10.

Still, I suppose that without IS I would not be selling pictures anyway.

1185
Unlikely.  I have been having difficulty working out exactly how SS makes a profit.

Think about it:  a monthly subscription costs $159 for a maximum of 750 downloads.  If each of those downloads pays a commission of 25c, the COST to SS is (750 x 25c = 187.5).

Unless I am overlooking something.......

So perhaps it has been operating as a loss leader, and now it has a library it can increase subscription rates to generate its profit.

Unlikely that contributors will get more.....

Big difference of course is that at IS it has taken me five weeks to get 70 pictures on line.  The same 70 at SS has taken just four or five days.......

Two or three days should be about right at the moment.

Inspections and approvals take six to seven days.  They are very fussy in some areas but more flexible in others.  In my first 70 uploads I have had only 2 rejections, but on the other hand I am a fanatic......

Interestingly, same 70 uploads to SS also only got 2 rejections......

1188
Not convinced about the 'views' argument.  If that's correct, why don't photos elsewhere get 300 views?

1189
None of the above.  Technically perfect isolated shots need to have the background at RGB 255.

I don't do isolations, but I suggest you use your favourite metering method and adjust the distance of the lights in order to get the background at the right level (using the histogram should help).

Trial and error I reckon.

Well done.

I agree with sim's comments.  Also, note that StockXpert doesn't want anything related to travel.  They seem to want to focus on business and food (just my opinion).

BTW Dave, I'm about a kilometre from you, in Roma Street Parklands.  If you fancy a coffee one day, send me a mail at [email protected]

You probably know that we also have hidesy here (in Clayfield).

General - Top Sites / Re: How many images
« on: March 12, 2007, 15:44 »
Things seem to be slowing down at IS.

Waiting list at IS has reduced from 30,000 images to 20,000 and approval time has shrunk by a couple of days.

DT input seems to be rising.

SS still going strong and approval is fast and efficient (possibly automated).

Perhaps IS has recruited some additional inspectors.  Or the flow of new images has declined given the complex upload procedure.

Time will tell.

1193
A tracking spreadsheet is a relatively simple thing to create.  You can do it yourself in less than half an hour.

I have a spreadsheet which I update weekly.  It includes number of images, number of downloads, total income, average income per download, rolling ten week averages of all of the above, percentage increase in sales and income each week, rolling ten week average of income increases etc etc.

Only takes ten minutes or so to update it each week.  The major numbers are then converted into bar charts.

Off Topic / Re: Someone from Italy?
« on: March 11, 2007, 07:30 »
I'm English but now live in Australia.  BUT I do LOVE pizza.  Do I qualify?

1195
Yes, sharply, I think I am already aware of that.  Tom's advice to stagger uploads to a regular daily flow looks sound.

1196
Tom, I suspect it has something to do with the subscription thing.  Subscribers are allowed to download their quota each month, and I suppose if they realise they haven't used their quota they will buy as many as possible just to use it up.  I can envisage a subscriber saying to himself 'Oh, I'll take a look at the latest uploads and download anything I think might be useful one day....'

Hence the importance of continuous uploading to 'always be in the latest uploads lists'.

Anyway, these are just my meandering thoughts.

Now at 24 downloads for my first day.  Okay, I've earned $6.  But $6 a day is very nice for not much work.  If I can get it up to $10 a day that will be $300 a month which is a good starting point to jump to higher levels.

Early days.  We'll see.

Microstock News / Re: Microsoft Announces HD Photo
« on: March 09, 2007, 16:52 »
Yes, it's about time someone came up with an improvement on jpeg.

RAW is fine, but in today's world there is no reason why we can't have a simpler, higher quality format with smaller files and greater manipulation ability.

1198
Correction - 23 downloads on my first day.  From 8 files.

Presumably this is what peeps meant by 'flash in the pan' and no doubt the initial enthusiam will wear off.

Presumably it will also 'die' if I stop uploading, as many people here have pointed out.

1199
Yes, I noticed that.  Lots of grey in the backgrounds too.

Buy another flash unit simply to light the background.  A cheap one will do.

Well, having got rejected first time back in January, I listened to everyone here and decided to apply again which I did just two days ago.

Got accepted.  Only two rejections - one for 'noise', the other for 'harsh lighting'.

These first eight photos became live on SS yesterday.  Overnight I got 22 downloads (I am in Australia).

22 downloads?  what?

Yesterday I uploaded some more.  26 photos.  Already got acceptance overnight.  100% approved.

Mind you, I am now the world's biggest fanatic over noise, composition and lighting.....

22 downloads on my first day?  What . goes on at SS?
