this happened to me last month, someone (new, zero images) flagged 'boutique' on my image of a sale tags on rack of women's clothes (in a boutique). I replied politely but firmly.

I've got nothing since the 11th; yet there have been sales since then.

however, as my first year in stock this could be my WME at IS, going by current trends.

my $balance is updated but nothing else has budged. only when i go into last DL do I see what's been happening.
(Yay, a new xmas upload has sold, that one sale will surely cover the money we spent buying the beach permit and driving up the beach in our new 4x4, and I broke one of the xmas balls I was shooting) Actually shouldn't be too ungrateful, $2.50 for one DL is nice enough (paid off the broken ball that never got shot). And nice to know that a file only 2 weeks old can be found and purchased.

doesn't the taking our jpegs and turning them into TIFFs kinda fly in the face of image quality? Why not ask us to upsize our own files and provide them in whatever format they want?

me too. i've only got 3 files up there currently, I gave up on them when I couldn't work out the MR system.
i shall wait for some big sales to spur me into ftp... they've quietly moved up the ranks of late so I'm going to put some stuff up.

This is good  ;)
glad you saw the humour in that.

all agencies should consider hiring staff in Australia  ;D or NZ so they can truly be working round the clock.

As it is now, everyone is trying to sell everything to everyone.   In the long run, I hope to see the small agencies find ways to distinguish themselves from the big ones, in terms of marketing and content.  Eventually, those of us with small portfolios of  unusual or niche material should be able to find small agencies that are something of a 'match',  and then it would be worthwhile for us to submit to them.

I agree with you in a lot of ways.  I have been in micro from day two or so and found that many sites, when they start up, let's say the first 3 million or so images, will take just about anything, or import an unedited api.  I think that's a mistake.  I think the first 3 million are critical, and having a clean site from the beginning is key.  A slower boat of higher quality.

Just thoughts.  I am writing a book on the subject (108 topics so far, kill me) from the inside out.  I think a lot of the slower sales at bigger sites is due in part to a glut of images and search fatigue.
this might be a dumb question, or often asked, but why don't agencies start culling non selling images after an arbitrary time period (say, 3 years?)

well I've just stuck a bunch into ftp, not holding my breath.
I don't like the interface, but I may change my mind once i'm more used to it.
at least i dont' have to rethink all my keywords like we do at IS.  and no categories! bliss.

does nobody know? I'm looking for any info on how to attach MR to images. not intuitive!!

ok, that link did help. took a few minutes for my release to appear, and then there's a dropdown menu below, but not in the edit process for each file, in the main page where "needs edit" files are waiting.

i have <100 files at PD because of this same issue. It took me ages to work it out the first time, and I was so put off I concentrated on the learning the idiosyncrasies of other agencies. I just don't get the point of uploading a batch of images with the MR when all my MR are sitting in the MR folder anyway. what's the difference? I've got a bunch of random images that have been sitting in Unfinished (or whatever it's called there) for months, because even though the MR is in the right folder, I can't find how to attach it.

the poll here will be v interesting for IS, if only half the month is accounted for.

half of my original subs have sold. one that was rejected but later accepted has outsold the originals though.

Newbie Discussion / Re: Workflow Advice

I now use a spreadsheet with the file names along the side,  agencies along the top and a Y, N, or P for yes, no, and pending. Blank spots mean it hasn't been submitted yet and a / for "I'm not going to submit this image there".    If the file sells anywhere I place  * by it's name in the spreadsheet.

You'll have to try a few methods and see what works best for you.
love a good spreadsheet.  :)
I use colours to indicate whether they've sold (green), pending (yellow) or gray for "don't bother" (notably: similars at DT, and another agency doesn't take ppl shots, or for DT exclusives)

I also track monthly uploads, dl and sales which can be converted into pretty charts to make me feel good. :)

i have my files names alphabetically and sorted in folders.
I have a TO do folder with raw files awaiting processing (that have been copied over from their home where all RAW originals live)
I have a WIP (work in progress) folder that stores all my .psd versions (now broken into folders as there were too many images to scroll through, and i'm only at 300!)
I have a spreadsheet with all files listed and whether it's accepted rejected sold etc.
i don't keep track of individual sales diligently, I tend to update it sporadically when I;m in the mood
one HD per year is enough so far for storage. have used just over half a TB this year so far.

Even though I'm a newbie (my first real year) I also don't bother resubmitting rejected files.
(Except last week iStock rejected a xmas file for 'sensor dust' that no other agency had noticed, and the file is already selling on SS. Buggar me, they were right, 2 spots! So I fixed it and reuploaded.  I just rename the file with R on the end.

« on: November 25, 2012, 01:10 »
they all have different genres that sell well (or in my case, that's what I've found)
I sell more landscapes with 123 than anywhere else.
however, for selling files every day (in my case, while I sleep) you want SS. :)

1222
I think it took me a few (3 or 4), cos I didn't know where to find a record of what i'd already submitted and I had no clue which ones were rejected each time. I think I kept on putting rejected ones into my submissions.

1223
is it normal to put in 3 of your keywords into the search and not see your file come up?

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Anyone using Nikon D800?
« on: November 24, 2012, 22:12 »
anyone able to compare it to the D4?

I met a photographer recently (famous portrait 'tog in my city) who has 2 of each and doesn't like the D800. I'm looking to add video to my future work offerings so need to upgrade the D700 soon-ish.

At least I already have great lenses. and yes, that 24-70 is my 90% used lens, but I still think the 50mm is sharpest.
