I took this in Singapore, needless to say it's been downloaded numerous times. I wish I could get it on DT though.

Edit: A re-edited version eventually made it on to DT. :)  Passenger wearing face mask at airport" border="0

If you mess with a pig you should take the precaution of wearing a mask and condom.

That was a pathetically poor joke, but for some reason I'm still laughing.
When I first heard that cases started to occur in Australia, my first reaction was that it will come to Bali as Aussies come to Bali. And yes there have now been a few Aussie tourists with the virus, who have been imprisoned in state of the art Balinese hospitals.

I've decided that I don't need the frustration.....I think I have to wait 90 days to delete the photos that were recently accepted..so in 90 days I'm gonna ask for what they owe me and close the account...Maybe I'll get lucky and I'll sell ONE or TWO more pictures in the mean time.......lol....I really doubt it.

So what was the outcome?

« on: August 10, 2009, 02:41 »
I had one sale with them last year in July. I think I got a Euro. I only have about 40 photos with them, however I hardly have enough time to upload to the major sites. Would be nice if Yay became a bigger player though, nice site and good service.

50% of what? They don't really make this clear. The 12 pounds is if you have a feature photo, not for a sale. (if I read it right)

They aren't very clear about the payments and fees.

"In number terms, that means your non-exclusive images will sell for anywhere between $150 - 3,000; and your videos will sell for $500-1,000 / minute. Exclusives? The sky is the limit."

« on: July 21, 2009, 07:46 »
"We can, as I offered, respond to individual reject cases, preferably like this in public so that others can see and understand too - straight from the reviewer"

Well that's great I'm often left with entirely different signals. I get a lot of rejections which indicates I'm doing something wrong, however the images I get on line, to be frank, sell like hot cakes which indicates I'm doing something right. If I could sort out the first part I'm laughin.

It's got to be hard balancing act being a reviewer. Hopefully, they get it right more than wrong. However, every photographer has his stories about how they get it wrong. Around 2 weeks ago I sent an image twice by mistake to an agency, the first file was rejected for composition, the second was accepted. It sold a day later.

"we are focused on our own business unit and no one else." Well we are focused on all of you and everyone else. So you will always be compared by us and it's not such a bad idea to compare yourself with others in order to improve yourself. If I look to the right, I see you in New Sites/Low Earners and I know you're not a new site. Although I would love you to be right up there with the model you have.

However, it is remarkable that you have spent the time giving me details of what you think could be improved with my images (Not that I agree with all the points, but a lot of them are valid). I still believe that more adequate answers could be provided by you and other agencies. "The overall technical quality of this image limits its stock value." This just pisses me off as it doesn't tell me anything. It doesn't have to be personally typed by the reviewer, just more details in the standardised replies. I could be wrong but I think I am less likely to run away if I'm told why I was rejected, although others might react differently.

I appreciate the time you spent and your sincerity. See you on my next round of rejections ;D

Thanks for the response. You make valid points. Although, standards are pretty high these days, whether subscription agencies or not. It just seems that a contributor has to learn what an agency wants, which is often difficult as standard rejection answers are often too vague. However, I'm all for learning. These are the photos.

« on: July 20, 2009, 00:02 »
I recently joined Zymmetrical. It's on iSyndica, so I thought why not. Sent 3 images to them. Took weeks for it to be reviewed. I actually logged on today to ask them when they will be reviewed. I saw all 3 rejected for the same reason, "The overall technical quality of this image limits its stock value." I guess if they were rejected for different reasons, I could believe more that the reviewer spent time analysing them. Yes I don't have the best camera in the world, but 2 of the 3 I sent are on SS and I find SS pretty tough. That's pretty frustrating. I'll keep sending to them, I just hope Zymmetrical is not one of the illogical agencies out there.

Today they tweet about adding Veer and AlwaysHD. How about IStock and Shutterstock we have been asking for a while?
I don't think it's a question of iSyndica not wanting them. IS is currently not supported and SS are for whatever reasons not participating yet. However, I think both these agencies could participate if they wanted to, I hope they do in the future. Dreamstime, Fotolia, StockXpert, 123rf, BigStock and currently 16 others think it's a good idea.

Dreamstime.com / Re: DT stock rank game
« on: July 05, 2009, 00:00 »
The game is great, I average around 70% and am always kicking myself when I choose the wrong answer. They already had the game, so didn't really spend any resources in sharing it with us. I personally think that microstock should be fun. This year I'm not getting too much joy with Dt, over the last 2 months I've been getting an 80% rejection rate. Alas, it seems my photography is getting worse. However, sales remain steady. Maybe the game is perfect for people like me, I go to the site and instead of trying to get my photos online, I just play the game instead.

Microstock News / MicrostockIndonesia.com
« on: July 02, 2009, 06:08 »
Hi I hope it's ok to post this. It really won't have any affect on msg's ratings and popularity. A few weeks ago, the forum www.microstockindonesia.com came online. I've commented in the forums a few times and it's actually quite a good set up. Very few members at the moment, I think 11. But It's nice that Indonesians are able to discuss Microstock issues in their own language. Fluent English in this country is still quite a rare thing. Ok very small news indeed, but I'd just thought I'd mention it.  :)

« on: June 20, 2009, 06:29 »
You can't forget that buyers do have a choice in their searches.  If they want the freshest they can search by most recent.  If they want the most popular they can search by most downloads.  They can reverse the orders if they want the most obscure.  When I buy photos I usually search other than by the site's default.

True, but I wonder how many buyers use anything other than defaults.

Not many from my experience.

I occasionally buy images. Instinctively, I want to see what's new. If the search engine is not on new images as a default, It's so simple to change it. I'm sure other buyers have the time and the awareness to make that extra click.

Read the fine print next time. You could also set your exclusive buyout price at 1$ and then buy your pictures yourself at DT :P

I just tried setting one of my pics. to $250 for exclusive buyout. A text came up saying the minimum value allowed is $350.  ::)

Nikon / Re: Nikon D90 or D5000?
« on: May 30, 2009, 08:15 »
nikon 5000 doesnt have AF engine.....

if you want shoot macro shots and use AF you need for example for 100mm nikkor which is very expensive..

tamron 90mm or tokina100mm or sigma 105mm for nikon have not  engine for AF, so you will focus manually (sometimes is good, sometimes is not good)

Yeah the lack of AF in the body is a major issue. It will limit the amount of lenses which are available to me. I went to Denpasar, the capital of Bali today. The shops only have a D90s, although I can get the D5000 online at www.camera.co.id Anyway, I managed to hold a D90 with its kit lens, however both were completely wrapped in plastic, so couldn't get a good feel. The shop owner wouldn't take the plastic off. The body felt the right size, however with the 18-105 lens on, it felt top heavy. The body alone was $1140 and with the kit lens about $1500 (before haggling). So the kit lens, which I didn't particularly like, is quite expensive. However, they were selling the Nikon 18-55vr lens for $160, so thats an option. The D5000 on the site above is about $960 with the 18-55vr kit lens.

Nikon / Re: Nikon D90 or D5000?
« on: May 29, 2009, 09:47 »

The D90 is much more advanced than the D200 technically but its build is like a toy. Here in the tropics with very high air humidity and temperature, I had 3 "toy" cameras broken down. The ruggedized D200 still hold very well. Three days ago I fell from a rock with it and a corner hit the rock but everything still works fine. I had it dumped in a swimming pool for about  0.5 sec and nothing happened. If the environment where you want to use it is not hostile like a studio in a normal climate, go for the D90.

Wow, I've heard that the D5000 is less solidly built than the D90. I guess I really need to see these two cameras, not sure if I can have a play with them in the shops though. There is about a $500 price difference in Indo. between these 2 cameras. The D90 is holding it's value which is an indication of it's popularity. I'm sure it can't be worse of a build than my Pentax istDL which has survived comfortably in the tropics, unless I just got lucky. The tilt screen on the D5000 would be a bonus for shooting in crowds, however, my feeling is that it might be a risk to buy it. It would probably be in several pieces after hitting that rock.

Nikon / Nikon D90 or D5000?
« on: May 28, 2009, 09:40 »
I want to change my camera. I know the saying a good worker doesn't blame his tools, but about 90% (an estimate) of my rejections are for image quality reasons. I have a Pentax ist DL, I quite like like using it, although probably don't realise it's inadequacies until I upgrade. I like what I've read about the D90. My first camera was an fm2, so have a soft spot for Nikons. The D5000's advantage is the tilt Lcd. I would actually use it to shoot. I often take crowd shots and it would be useful sticking the camera up in the air and then looking at the lcd to frame the image. However, I think I won't have too many choices on lenses compared to the D90, as there is no In body focus. Any of you able to offer any advice? I don't want to buy the D5000 only to feel I should have got the D90. Cheers.

How I would love to feed the beast. However, circumstances dictate and I can only give the beast a low carb diet.

I think the apparent favoritism for new submitters is due to the fact that the 'new images boost' gets watered down the more images you have online.

That same 10 images/day extra downloads you get when you upload 20 more images just doesn't seem as spectacular if you are already averaging 60 downloads/day, sure it makes a difference but not the 100% or 500% increase in earnings you got when the 10 extra images were a significant boost to your portfolio size.

This seems like a logical explanation. If it is however something to do with being the first month online, then I might notice soon, as my first month is almost over. Still getting what seems to be a lot of downloads for the amount of images I have online. I wish I had more time and faster speed than 60kbps upload speed to do microstock.

1274
If there is any at all. I was accepted on ss on April 17. I just have 22 images there, but 47 downloads. I've heard that newbies get preference. I think this is speculation, but it could be true as 47 downloads seems a lot. I can understand preference for new images but not for newbies. Do any of you know anything about this? Cheers.

1275
SALES? What sales?
I was on there for 7 months with nearly 2,000 images and zip, nada, nothing for sales.
It is also easy to delete your port there which I did.
Great easy site to upload to but that is all.

-Larry

Why did you take your images off?

I'm going to be 72 years old this June ...... I don't think I will live another 50 years to get my first payout on Yay. Who knows it could take even longer than that!
-Larry

I never understand why people take their ports. off places after spending time putting them on. Yes I know they have an easy upload, but time was still spent. Plus its always good to have as many files online to get ur name about. If someone was browsing Yay, just checking out the site and saw ur photos, he might look for them elsewhere, with the agencies he usually uses. So basically it's more exposure, plus if Yay becomes good and that's always a possibility, ur photos are already sitting there, while others will be trying to upload their photos and getting frustrated with stupid rejection reasons.
