There's quite a good documentary on a street photographer has just been released on DVD, Finding Vivian Maier

Watching it right now. Impressive, interesting. Street photographer that never showed much of her work to anyone and was very reclusive.

Twin Lens Rolleiflex for much of it.

15 years ago, I sold cds and dvd on ebay that way, but it was never very profitable, even with 100+ images on the disc; competition kept the price below $10 for the most part.

early on, when ebay allowed digital downloads it was reasonable to sell that way, but they disallowed that many years ago

Maybe after 15 years it is possible to sell more expensive

Was that a joke?

Here we have it.....the start of a new price war.........
But the prices went up, not down.

BEST VALUE
Professional
Download 350 images every month, including access to all JPEG and Vector sizes

US$ 169
per month

US$ 394

no more 750 a month plan ? That's why 25 a day went away, it would have been 12 a day. When do we get the raise.

anyway, the whole point being is that where micro is headed is ugly, and it does not bode well for any of us if it keeps going this way.

Yes, most of us agree with the above statement.   Problem is we don't seem to agree on what to do about it, or even if we CAN do something about it.

yep, getting photographers to stand up united for a cause is very similar to herding cats.

i do my bit by not supporting SS primarily for their sub model and that to me is really the downfall of the whole industry sooner or later.

in fact when i first toyed with the idea of microstock 8 years ago, before i went exclusive i went with many other agencies with the exception of SS, again, subs were bad news in my books and the 0.25 they offered was a complete kick in the nuts, and sadly that is still the same rate on offer.

SS is the downfall of the whole industry? You really are blinded by your hate.

Thanks John for posting this thread. It is so refreshing to hear something positive in this forum and the ensuing happy stories that follow. I too have been full time shooting stock for many years.

Ginger... Go girl go.

Same here good to read something positive.

Adobe Stock / Re: Adobe changes at Fotolia
« on: March 29, 2015, 16:10 »
I went to see my stats at two of my best performers, SS and Fotolia, with a lot of curiosity last night, since Fotolia is making some big changes now. After an initial  Fotolia boost last week, the things are back to normal, with SS winning. SS fought off another attack. Who is next?

Just wait.

Just wait for lower pay, more profit for Adobe? You double this month because FL couldn't go any lower for 2 years.

You're right. Seriously, Adobe is now saying, "here's what we get from FT now, how do we get more moving forward?" There is really very little chance they will enact changes that up commissions. My guess is that they will use the go-to carrot everyone else uses: the infamous volume argument.

You may have missed it, they have enacted changes that up commissions.

Does that tell how much you will get for a cloud download subscription sale? Didn't think so. Just wait means, bend over and get ready.

No news about The Chad being hung out to dry, then?

Still there, Talked to him a few days ago. doing well.

Next time you phone Chad could you ask if it's Benito Mussolini or Francisco Franco who was his most influential childhood idol?

Now when I sign in I see a red-bannered offer to buy credits for $12 each or 3 for $33. Weren't the new lower credit prices on par with Shutterstock before...about $14.50 each as an entry point?

I get this banner. Save 20% on credit packs with the promo code CREDITS20NOW. Ends March 20, 2015 at 11:59 pm MDT.

Yadayada I am not allowed to share those details anymore. It's all still on the SS forum for everyone to read.

Okay the SS forum search is broke. Link please?

This has been talked about many times but since it's come up again I have another datapoint that supports SS auto-control turning down (or controlling) sales.  My first 2 days of March were low ($15 ish per day) based on my daily average (avg-$30), then day 3 was a monster day, well over $100, then the next 4 days NO OD's, NO VIDEO SALES, NO SOD's and low subs. No days over $13 since my big $100+ day. This happens ALL THE TIME TO ME.
Wrote about this a while back on the SS forum and was hounded down by the establishment, just dismissing the argument without any info to back up their claims, while I had posted graphs and examples. The one person who did agree with me, had analysed his own data and came to the same conclusion

Have link to your discover, graphs and examples?

Who did you review for and how long?

I imagine they are creeping up because so many people pulled their work that the ones left are the only ones left to buy from.

Only ones left are the ones that DP pays to vote them up. Many people pulled because of bad 3% pay, lies, selling to partners for sub pay while the partners sold for full price. DP has been caught in denial lies. I don't believe the poll is true, only people who make money stayed. NO, low earner, no future.

General Stock Discussion / False Envy
« on: March 02, 2015, 23:06 »
The researchers surveyed 736 college students and found that, basically, if you quietly stalk your friends on Facebook and then realize that your life doesn't measure up to theirs, you feel bad about yourself.

"If Facebook is used to see how well an acquaintance is doing financially or how happy an old friend is in his relationship -- things that cause envy among users -- use of the site can lead to feelings of depression," said Margaret Duffy, a professor at the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

http://guardianlv.com/2013/08/facebook-causes-depression-new-study-says/

If you quietly watch your friends on MSG and then realize that your life doesn't measure up to theirs, you feel bad about yourself. If MSG is used to see how well an acquaintance is doing financially or how happy an old friend is, things that cause envy among users -- use of the site can lead to feelings of depression. If you believe the messages and think you are missing out. You have MSG and Microstock envy.

Believe in yourself and your own work.

Oh yes lots of images coming in BUT...

I've noticed another pattern lately that will surely shake things up a bit in the coming years.
The more successful photographers and designers, those with their unique quality, style and concept are barely uploading anymore so either are moving elsewhere or have already done so. Once and a while they will upload their leftovers to the greedy bunch but that's about it. These people have realised or starting to realise their work and talent is worth far more then pennies and it shows in their sales outside of microstock. Not only the lack of sales but the treatment by agencies and their staff is what makes this even worse. This has gotten a lot worse in the past years too. So to me those numbers are not equal to success, especially not long term.

Anyone else noticed the same pattern? more people being fed up, especially in the past few months?

ps. this is not just about SS but overall.

Yes I noticed the same pattern that you see. People moving from Microstock to elsewhere. I don't think Microstock cares about quality now just numbers and money. Fed up people have been leaving for years, that's not new.

New Sites - General / Re: 500px
« on: February 16, 2015, 10:28 »
Hey nitrus,

500px is a photo community for discovering, sharing, selling, and buying amazing photography (full disclosure - I work there). Our community's photos are available for licensing at prime.500px.com. You're right - it's not your typical stock photography marketplace.

The link KnowYourOnions posted is a bit out of date now, a lot has changed over the past year :) We now offer one of the highest royalty rates in the industry - 70% net for every license sold.

Mantis, I'm sorry to hear you had trouble with uploading. If you like, shoot me an email at [email protected] and hopefully I can help address some of your concerns.

Hi Adriana

Is there a possibility of having watermarks in the future? If it wasn't for this problem, I would join 500px in a flash. As it is now, I just don't have the time to do all this extra work.

Annie

No watermark?

The search on IS is so bad that clients can't find anything. Can't buy something they can't find. This is good for your other sales.

Yeah, they said it was fixed, but still broken.

It's not fixed. Mutlimillion dollar company and they don't know what their ftp and uploads are doing. Then they write it's fixed when it's not? Not good.

Pond 5 is no different from the rest. Pixmac was cut from partners many sites, closed, because they held pictures illegally. Now they are a team. What did we expect. Free pictures you lose sales. Just like rest.
