Just got credit for a Oct 31 sub. I think that might be all done for now?

@Ramin: What did the October 7 email say?

When the politics and hate take a break, we never got an answer to the question. What did theOctober 7 email said? We don't have the answer that started a political war on an assumed guess.

The people who had an unfair advantage because the search favored old pictures with more downloads count, lost that when SS changed the search to something fair. That's why gbalex and friends had long time pictures on the top of the search. Of course they are bitter, it gave somebody else like us a fair chance to get to the front of the search where all those old pictures held spots just because of age, total downloads and a bad set of algorithms. SS made it better and fairer for the rest of us to get higher search placement and make more money.

You know what, it's not September anymore and it's not the first week... (other thread)

Istockphoto, Where greed meets incompetence

We all know this ... AFTO.
I knew I had the wrong thread. I needed to gripe though! (Still do!)
 :)

This is the right thread. Over a month since the change. 1 week is to short. 1 month isn't very long. Any change up or down could be normal variuation and nothing to do with the new.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Travel photography Sales
« on: October 28, 2014, 21:56 »
Cutting costs is only one part of the equation.  In order to make money you have to work hard.  You won't be successful if you look at travel photography as something you do on the way to doing something else.  That's a terrible approach and if you're going to do that you might as well stay at home.

Taking a trip to do travel photography is a terrible business approach. You'll never recover your expenses.

I received an e-mail from DP regarding the 3% royalty.

Currently, we are changing our monthly subscription royalties, so you will be receiving 44% out of each monthly subscription download.

2 months no change, anybody believe DP crooks now?

I wonder how many other places he has this collection of 4000 stolen pictures. I hope Alamy sends him a bill for a refund. We need some laws to stop this.

How much should my RPI be to make $1000 a month on SS?
That's a very strange question.  If you have 1 image your RPI needs to be $1,000 and if you have 1,000 images your RPI needs to be $1.

You can't help me from the poll? How many pictures do I need to make $1000 a month?

?????

The poll will not help you in personal forecasting.  That's not the point of the poll.  The poll is to give you an indication of how your SS RPI stacks up against the rest of us here.

To find out how many pictures you need to earn $1,000 a month, see tickstock's answer.  Calculating revenue involves three numbers:  RPI x Number of images = INCOME.   Plug in $1000 for income, divide by your current RPI (you would be wise to lower it a bit if you're forecasting long-term), and you get your answer.

Lower because ROI is going down on microstock? The poll is to see how I stack up on SS for 1 month nothing else? What next do we compare shoe size?

Despite some claims to the contrary, this thread is one of the most interesting I have seen on the forum in months.

Why?

I know my own RPI on SS and microstock overall.  It's a useful tool in my personal forecasting and goal-setting, regardless how anyone else is doing.  (And no one can tell me RPI is not useful in my forecasting.  That's just a silly argument.)

But the real reason this thread is insightful is because I've always wondered how I'm doing on SS compared to the overall base of contributors.  I don't mean in total dollars, because port size varies wildly.  And I don't care much about "I'm up 8% on SS this month" or "I'm down 20% this month" because that's just top-level trend info.

This thread has showed me that my RPI is right in the middle or slightly above the average of others here, assuming people are answering accurately.  Is that actionable info?  Of course not.  But if your employer posted a breakdown of everyone's hourly rate, wouldn't you be VERY curious to see it?  Of course you would.  It wouldn't necessarily change how you work, but it would give you an indication of whether you're doing well or poorly on average compared to your co-workers.

This poll has filled a true gap in market intelligence.

How much should my RPI be to make $1000 a month on SS?

General Stock Discussion / Re: Acceptance of "paintings"?

OK the question is, is there any market for "paintings" made from photos?

Correct! That's definitely part of the original question.
I wouldn't distinguish between the real and digital paintings (as long as the latter ones are done in good taste).

There is at least one of the frequent contributors here who happens to paint as well, and he has many of his paintings included in his stock portfolio, so I would assume that the paintings sell.
Hard to say whether they are bought for advertisements or for printing an art print to be hanged on a wall. Hardly to be used as editorials!

Only if you believe that frequent contributor. Does he sell on IS?

I'll wait for somebody whos been in Micro for over 6 months to make these claims. You want money to know best number of keywords, based on what? Title description. How did you come to these heavy work decisions.

Heard back from the user -- he licensed it through iStock.  I'm not crazy about them using it on Facebook.  I think it's probably not quite kosher to do that.   As someone said, I'm happy to know that they at least paid to use it given how many times I've had photos stolen.  Guess I won't make anything of it.

Why can't he license and use it?

Amazing!
They probably need to get it out of the way ahead of the big shake-up.

Proof that they could get it done on time and just don't care.

1416
So someone tell me, is it official = now? Have the flipped the switch and 5 = 1 and no more sizes, and collections have merged Etc.

My last two DLs after the 2nd have been listed as large for $1.25 commission. This is better than the .44 for a small that I got on the 2nd.

Just like that, it's in effect now? Wouldn't we expect down time for the big switch? I didn't notice anything, didn't see the usual messages here "is IS down...".
From their posted FAQ:
When will these changes go live on the website?
We are planning a September 15th launch but changes may start to appear as early as September 13th. The site will require a limited weekend outage but you will be notified in advance.

I don't actually understand your confusion. Your last 2 DLs were L size for $1.25, and the previous sale was an S size for $0.44. Since an S is 2 credits and an L is 5, those royalties don't seem unusual to me.

People are leaving because of a change that hasn't launched. He's seeing downloads increase before the change. Somebody said their SS sales went down when IS made this change. Goes back to people seeing before it happens or clairvoiance. That explains the question why no shut down though.

For indies, they just become a mid-low tier agency and get uploads according to their new lower priority status.

Yup!

Yup! Indies just took another cut.

Some reviewers work fast and accept quick. Other reviewers work fast and reject big batches. Luck of the draw. Reviewers are required to work hours and are supposed to work weekends. Should be the same all days all week. To many rejects for wrong reasons is the fast review making rejections. No consistant way to know what they will do or who will get your pictures.

Shutterstock.com / Re: How are sales going?- Shutterstock
« on: September 04, 2014, 22:15 »
Low number of SOD's lately. Does anyone else experience this as well?

Yes totally. It's almost like Shutterstock is giving new contributors better positioning over old farts like me to encourage & motivate them to upload new, fresh content so they don't just give up.  There certainly doesn't seem to be any commitment to the longer-term contributors who've shown their support and dedication over the last 7 years. Now, this is how I feel and what I believe is happening, but I have no proof other than my ALL OF A SUDDEN horrible sales over the last few months. Yea, a SOD here and there but the overall downloads, especially OD's is nearly non existent. I have over 3000 files on SS. Yesterday I made $1.24 in OD.

+1

Accumulating empirical data seems to suggest they are handing out port demotions based on the years we joined. I have seen three tiers of image placement demotions and have been at SS since 2004. And yes the drops show up on a graph very clearly. Sudden drops with no recovery.

July and August were ugly in comparison to last year and the previous 8 years. In fact I had better sales in 2006. In the short term it looks to me like they are taking full advantage of the increased earnings that IS defectors bring in the form of lower royalty payments. Ask yourself why did they disable the TOP 50 weekly images. The simple TOP 50 query worked perfectly for 9 years and they had no problem outing our best sellers for those 9 years. It is plain that Shutterstock does not want us to see the contents of that TOP 50 Query now that they have demoted our ports.

Empiracle data? Do you have real data and research. SHow us the documentation and records of the empirical data. That would be a first over rumors and false accusations of demotions or caps. Then when somebody does good you change clothes and become a skeptical data wolf doubter. You only see or accept the people who boost your preconceived conclusion.

I liked Etuiante better when he was Joma St L. I wonder if somebody stole a 6 year old account password. Just doesn't seem right.

SS has always been the highest performer for me, and it continues to be so, but for the first time in the several years I've been a contributor there, I failed to make payout for two consecutive months (July and August).  I've had a few months here and there that I was just a bit short of the required minimum for payout, but never for two months in a row... until now.  I'm wondering if it's just a fluke, or is it the beginning of a trend?   :-\

What's your payout set at? How many images do you have? Can you link to your gallery on SS?

Try to push this site towards professionalism and relevence instead of away from it.

The solution I would like to see, and I'm repeating myself for your benefit, is minimum 50% commissions from some agency, across the board for any downloads, that are NOT by subscription.
If you just want one agency that does that it already exists, Pond5 has 50% royalties across the board.  Alamy also has 50% sales.  GL has 52%.  I don't think Pond5 or Alamy or GL just existing will solve anything.  Please explain what you mean?

Now they just need buyers. The artist side is taken care of. I guess better pay isn't the answer according to you but a protest group or union is what we need. I'd want the truth and more money. Mantis and Cascoly are right. Share information and expose the truth when they try to cheat us.

If my father can take the time to speak to both employees and customers as well as run a complex global comany with 10,000 employees and $3.1 billion in revenue.

What are you doing here? Playing at "the photographer"? It's better for you and for 10,000 employees that you stop playing with images and think about your real life...

He's so rich he doesn't need to work it makes microstock is a good way to pass time and educate all us low life common people.
Does SS care? Why? People take 28 cents for work that costs much more to shoot. You make under minimum wage. Worst of all SS is the best place by 3 times and you ask if they care. They pay the best, don't cheat us, and what does that make the rest? Do any of them care?

Apparently so. The OP's first link leads to an error page.

All do now.

1425
That is not the point,  it is about RPI not being a good indicator of an agency's performance. Any earnings someone makes is only representative for their portfolio, it is no guarantee you will make the same with your portfolio.

Same reson for rpi between agencies not any good if they aren't identical pictures and numbers. What sells one agency might not another. Photo has rpi value of 0 and sells many times on another, how does that compare. Photo accepted one but not accepted another. People with 500 won't have same rpi as people with 5000.

RPI would be good if all the same pictures all places.
