Duncan Seems to be down for me today - both the www version as well as http://canstock... Another kick to the servers? Steve

Thanks GL!
I didn't hear directly from BigStock support, but the images have just been reviewed and accepted (with some rejections for artifacts etc.) as normal - no need to make images of the Federal buildings in DC editorial. All I need now is some sales...
Steve
EDIT - I did get a nice email from them. As I'm sure you all know, BigStock automatically sets the category from the keywords and the system was guessing that the image was editorial and hence requesting editorial descriptions

I have views in the forties for some images, and no sales since December. I have carried on uploading month after month and now have over 1100 pictures on line and shared with most of the partners, but nothing in the way of sales. Last year was reasonably good - some 20 or 30 euro sales, but I think the loss of Polylook was a big blow to them. It isn't a difficult site to upload to, and so I will probably continue, but it is a bit depressing to see those sales disappear.

Thanks for the links - those are helpful! Just a clarification - when I said "public buildings", I really meant ones owned by the "people" such as Federal buildings in the US. I didn't mean privately owned buildings taken from a public place, which have different rules as your links show.

I've done that - will let you know how BigStock reply
Thanks

Shutterstock didn't come back right away for me and so I went to veg out in front of the TV instead of checking sales! When I looked this morning I found two enhanced sales - now we could do with more of these short failures!

I've been building up my collection of photographs of the main government buildings in Washington DC (like these - http://www.backyardimage.com/Americas/Washington/9534652_yLUKg#1242530388_XLouf) and have been uploading to the main sites. Most of them are accepted without any issues, but BigStockPhoto has rejected each one stating that I need to submit and keyword/categorize them as Editorial. I was aware of the copyright restrictions on the Korean Memorial, but the basic buildings such as the Lincoln Memorial, Capitol building - those must be old enough to be outside any architectural design restrictions, surely. Anyone know of a change in the law about government buildings or why BigStock is now taking this line? Steve

Fotolia has been OK since I wrote this post - it does seem to be a day or so behind the others, but it gets there. I don't see uploads happening to Panthermedia or Cutcaster - do you see those working for other people (it may be a configuration issue on my part!)
My suggestion to add a small table on the Support page would make it easier for contributors to know if you had an issue with a site that had changed its upload process, or if we should just wait and the files would get there in the end.
Either way - it is a great service, and I included it in the blog I published last week about the workflow I follow for managing stock photos. Hope this gets you some more customers.

I checked mine just now and I have 1.12 pounds plus $25 bonus. I just managed to upload on the very last day of the promotion, but I'm jealous that you got twice the bonus! I think this shows that the pounds bit must be sales though.

Looking forward to seeing them. I have had no trouble selling pictures of coins - both stacks of them as well as individual macro isolated images. Using a pen tool is hard for that as they have little protrusions on the rim. I took this one on a white background, used magic wand to select most of the white to get a mask and then carefully painted out the bits where there had been a shadow. It sold for 36c today on Shutterstock which works out that I earned about 60c per hour for this one shot... Steve

I use the Pen tool as well - for certain types of object. For hard edges this can work well, but it can be difficult to do well. I try to get the background white in the shot rather than after the fact. Can you post a full sized image so we can have a look? It could be that the site doesn't like the extract and this is the reason they give?

10 sales on Alamy - fantastic! Well done! Alamy was a dead duck for me, as usual, but the other sites were fantastic in the month - best month ever and more than $140 above the previous best month in January. Definitely helped by 4 video sales on Pond5 and a couple of extended licenses on iStock, but the rest was just solid sales day by day through the month. As usual, I have posted more detail on my blog, but here is the headline chart: Steve

Next time upload a few at a time of each subject so as not to tax one inspector too much. But 47 images of the same subject? Begging for rejection as too similar? Maybe - although there are a lot of things to photograph in Washington DC around Cherry Blossom time - and I did get there at dawn to start with some sunrise shots. I think 47 probably was too much all in one go, but Fotolia had been reasonably good to me in the past few months in terms of acceptance ratio and so I just went with the lot. Oh well - their loss... Steve

I've doubled in the past 12 months from around $250. Not enough to retire on, but it all helps! This month will be very good because of $125 worth of Pond5 video sales. I've written a lot about building up stock photo income, but that video stuff seems to come out of the blue and make a big difference to the month. I can feel another blog article coming on about how to make money from video Steve

Although one day up and one day down... I came in this morning to see all my 47 images of the Cherry Blossoms in Washington DC rejected by Fotolia for a combination of Technical problems mainly. The same images that have been accepted on Canstock, Bigstock, Shutterstock, Zoonar etc. I generally take this in my stride, but every one of them.... Steve

Talking of Fotolia - I just noticed a L Standard sale in my list with zero credits. I don't think I have any free images on Fotolia, but is there a way to see free images in my account from the site. I sorted the files by the colored dot, but nothing appeared to show up as Free in that list. Any other ideas?

That's exactly how I look at this business - I'm still working part-time (mornings) which leaves the afternoon for stock photography and I keep the images flowing to the sites. I had a good $52 sale on iStock this morning which is almost guaranteed to make March my best month so far. I probably missed the golden days of microstock (this is my fourth year now), but I'm still enjoying it and it is starting to go some way towards paying some bills!

Stu49 Agreed, that would work as well, but I like the look of the month names - I must be strange like that! On the folders for each day - do you take so many images that a daily folder is worthwhile. I know in Lightroom that you can look at the folder above the one holding the images, but I would find it more difficult to remember which images I had FTP'd to Lightburner if I had to look in each day folder. I need to update my blog, because I forgot to mention that I also keep a collection of that I think are my "best" images from the shoot or trip as at some stage I am thinking of going to art festivals and trying to sell some prints. I mainly take travel and landscapes and so some of them are attractive enough to sell, and so my collections also help me remember the "best" shots. I particularly like this image of the Jefferson Memorial in Washington DC - it looks good as a large print: Steve http://www.backyardimage.com

I'm sure all the experienced people here have developed their own workflow for stock images over the years, but a friend of mine is seriously thinking of getting started in microstock and so I agreed to explain my own workflow for him. It got a little more involved than I expected at the start, but the final result may be useful for someone starting up and wondering how to make the keywording and uploading as painless as possible. If anyone wants to use this - feel free (there are no referral links in the article although there are other ones elsewhere on my blog!). If anyone wants to suggest an improvement, I'm always willing to learn and change my ways! Hope it helps someone. Steve http://www.backyardsilver.com

David Can you explain the latest with uploads to Fotolia. I thought it was not working and so I uploaded the images directly to Fotolia, but at least a week later, the images suddenly appeared (as duplicates) with Fotolia. Images I uploaded to Lightburner yesterday appear to be in the same situation. Could you add a table on your support page summarizing any issues you are having with the various sites and letting us know if we should upload directly to the sites? BTW - it is a great site and a great timesaver! Steve http://www.backyardsilver.com

I've had some nice conversations with them. They want a licensing agreement for 50% of the royalties, but as my royalties on these images are pretty small, we decided it was better to just take down the images, rather than go to the trouble of setting up a licensing agreement. Something learned every day in this business! Steve http://www.backyardsilver.com

I received the following from VIP Brands in Paris: "Dear Steve, VIP manages the rights to the Grand Arche de la Dfense. This structure is covered by a copyright and any use of any images of this structure requires approval and must bear the copyright and incurs royalties. Could you please contact us about your images of this structure. We have seen several on the web and most notably those on Shutterstock. With kind regards Ivanka Ivanka Hahnenberger General Manager VIP Brands www.vip-licence.com" I only have one image on Shutterstock with this location although there are probably more on the other sites. Anyone else been contacted by the company? I guess I should just offer to take the image off the various stock sites? Steve http://www.BackyardSilver.com

I've started publishing my income per site and the number of files on each site so you can work out my performance. I have continued to add about 100 files a month over the last year and have almost doubled my income and hope to get $600 this month. Not enough to live on though! I don't take many studio type shots - I find good quality travel and location shots sell pretty well. Isolated bengal cats are good sellers for me as well! Steve http://www.backyardsilver.com
