To P5 Director of Artist Development & Experience, Robert Pascale keywords are more important than reviews!  ::)  >:(  ::)

I'm thinking someone who is introducing an article about keywording ought to know the difference between complimentary and complementary and use the correct one. Or is this just me being old-fashioned and pedantic?

Ha...spot on!

Curious to see how long is going to take them to correct that!?!

Pond5 / Re: Pond5 Ranking without Video?
« on: March 15, 2016, 13:18 »
Definitely in low earners tier for pix. I wouldn't bother.

Even their narrative on LinkedIn clearly shows that photos are NOT their priority.

"Pond5 is transforming the role of video in the creative process by connecting media buyers to more than 40,000 artists in over 150 countries. The company strives to improve creative production through its innovative artist technology, easy-to-use platform, and ever-growing library of more than 4 million royalty-free video clips, plus millions of photos, music, sound effects, and other leading-edge media...."

A few weeks ago I had some mail exchange with Fotolia support.
Basically, one of their reviewers mistakenly rejected some footage.
I was upset because they claimed they can't do nothing about it and they didn't seem to care much either.
I threatened to leave the agency if they wouldn't enable the clips right away.

Guess what? They enabled the clips and I've got two sales the same day after almost one month of no cash flowing on Fotolia.
This coincidence made me think and wonder.
So, here's the question: who is controlling the sales of the agencies?
I mean, I get a report which states I've got one or more sales. But who grants me that each and every agency reports and pays out the exact amount of clips they actually sell?
Seriously, I don't know.
Anyone?

Thanks!

I salute you for bravery.
Much more needed in every aspect of this business and in all agencies!
Raise your voice folks.

Pond5 / Re: Is setting 80$ for a 4k video is too high?
« on: March 13, 2016, 09:50 »
The ability to offer everything, from superhigh quality to cheap stuff for bloggers or people who just have fun making clips was the biggest attraction of pond5.

If they now want to become an elitist site and reject a lot of our uploads, then this is a very significant change in direction.

It s a pitty their original marketplace system was brilliant. All it needed was one or two talented editors that go through it all and select great content for every budget.

Plus give the customer the option to subscribe to galleries and collections.

At the same time treat us as entrepreneurs and stay out of the individual portfolio.

I havent had a single sale on pond5 this month. I dont get downloads every day, but it seems like a long stretch.

But I dont know if it can be blamed on the new system.

Well, P5 wanted investors to help them grow, so now they got to play by greedy Wall St rules.   8)

You said "Who is doing sales there? N O B O D Y".  If that was true, they wouldn't be selling anything.  So yes, you are making things up and there's really no need when there are real problems at the moment, like the long review times, mass rejections and the subscription program.

When buyer calls there is no sales department to talk to, like in other agencies!
There is no sales agent to discuss and make deals, like in other agencies! To me, this is a huge problem.
I said "nobody" as no live person to talk to.

Company is in re-construction phase to corporate business, but their 10 years long
legacy of laid back attitude towards everything is still present all over.

Ok? Now back to the real problems .... the long review times, mass rejections and the subscription program.
We pointed out to these long ago and NOBODY from P5 came forward to explain them.
What else we can do here?  :-\

I think all agencies should stay . out of our portfolios instead of trying to micromanage what we do.

They can always hire editors that go through the collection to showcase to the customers.

Inspections should be for technical quality, logos and legal stuff, checking releases etc...

Or they add an additional "superstock" collection with extra high prices or special license that they heavily promote.

But micromanaging portfolios means destroying the marketplace.

It is a shame, I really loved pond5, I was hoping they would use their skills to increase sales of photos, not ruin their video sales :(

After 10 years of existence P5 still does NOT have Sales Department.
Who is doing sales there? N O B O D Y
Video sales that was generated trough SEO got ruined by competition, because buyers go elsewhere for better deals and experience.
Obviously not true because up until recently, they have been selling lots.  Most people here seem to say they are either the best selling video site or they are in their top 3.  I think there is enough real things to concern us in the past few months without having to make things up.

ha ha...

Who is making things up? What is not true?
P5 does not have sales department. Check their LinkedIn page, if you don't believe me.

After solid 10 years, only recently (January 2016) they have got VP of Sales who is from February 2016  looking for first ever Sales Executive.  8)

Having AP is huge!
As they said, it's an honor to work with such an established and trusted newsgathering organization ...

Surely AP choose their partners carefully.

What about Shutterstocks competition in this space?
Oringer doesnt seem too worried, and brings it back to Shutterstocks culture. If were committing to the right strategy and innovation, we dont need to pay any attention to what the competition is doing, he says. We focus on executing our plan, and moving forward.

Wait for three months before making conclusions. My sales slow but still happening this month.

I agree on 3 months wait for conclusions ...
although we have been waiting for them long 10 years to establish basics, that's why no much trust there.  :-\

I understand that some (most?) agencies will eventually get involved in a price war and gradually lower the price of clips or the percentage going to artists in a way or another. That should partially be offset by increasing the number of sales to more budget conscious buyers.
But surely there is a market for professionals members of the industry who are happy to pay several hundreds for a clip and need an agency with the highest quality and a good selection.
It would be wrong if all agencies will go for the race to the bottom, one or two should take the higher segment of the market by keeping high prices and good retribution to artists, like some sort of "macroish" stock.
Pond 5, by allowing artists to set the price, was the closest thing to that: many artist upload their best clips exclusively at Pond 5 and set a price of several hundreds. At the same time, higher end buyers go to Pond 5 because they find special content.
It would not be a wise move if Pond 5 should position itself for the cheapest segment of the market

Ha...wishful thinking!
There is no proof that high-end-buyers use P5 regularly.
They are with Shutterstock, who offers them better sales experience.
Also try to compare indemnification and liability offered from both and you will guess where big fishes go to shop.
Sadly enough we don't get much of that final bill.
Media sales is more complicated than online food ordering service!

Why leaving money on the table?
Mine are set between $149 and $189.
I start with $149 and I raise the price to $189 after the first sale.

This seems pretty daft especially if they're rejecting new 4K content in preference for older existing HD content.

Pond5 has been around almost 10 years - maybe it's time to start deleting files which are very old (say 8+ years) with no sales to make way for better quality new clips

Wait... is there a cap in uploading?
You saying if we delete old files, new ones will be accepted easier?
btw...I agree on 4K remark.

There's no cap that I know of - was just airing the idea that maybe the curators should start culling all the old unsold crap (of which there is plenty) instead of rejecting new 4K acceptable stuff.

Yes that makes sense, but prior to deleting anything they got to ask you for permission to do it, no? ....which would be time consuming.  :-\

Or just us decide to do the cleaning our ports. BUT, I really don't think there is any guarantee they would accept your new work afterwards.  :-\
