Try out the new version 2.4.6
Also toggling the theme should definitely fix things like the IPN. Please update me on that. There is literally no reason the path should not be updated.

No crash on new page now, but the IPN isn't changing. I set the theme to Twenty Twelve then back to Symbio.

Symbiostock - Technical Support / Re: Help with the site
« on: June 27, 2013, 22:31 »
Done with changing the logo. EULA copied. But I am unable to create menu where if I bring my mouse a drop down should popup and I should be able to select the category.
Need further help on
1) I need to create page where all the pictures are listed. basically my portfolio.
2) create a page where all the categories are listed in the form of folders/sets similar to what we see in Flickr etc. I saw few Symbio sites have done that.
3) in the setup, Tinny has mentioned that we need to select "Post" in the settings but I don't see just "Post"
I see post page. I have selected that.

I really like the websites that everyone has created.  Looks so professional. Mine looks like done by 10yr kid. Maybe they can also do a better Job that I

1) is easy, you don't need to create it, it's automatically generated at www.yoursite.com/image/ so you just need a link to that. For an edited portfolio, create a category, say 'portfolio' and assign a bunch of your best to that, then call it from the menu.

2) If you mean something like the front page at http://www.picturemojo.co.nz then that's a set of individually prepared index pics arranged using the Visual Composer plugin with links to categories.

3) Not sure what you're after here.

Keep going, you'll get it sorted in the end!

Just had our 3rd sale - $5.75

The buyer didn't get his password, but fortunately emailed us, so we were able to sort it out.

May I ask how you handled it? Did you manually create a password for them? If yes, how did you do that? I am going to put a note on my home page, asking for anyone having trouble to please email me, but I'd like to be prepared with a plan on how to handle it. I think I can go into my db and create a user and get an encrypted pw, but if there is an easier way, I'd prefer doing that.

I'd already had the email to say a user had registered (and seen it looked like a real user!) so I went into Users and opened that user for editing. There's an entry for changing the password there, so I created a new password - I actually used Password Safe to generate a reasonably secure one - and entered that twice, saving changes. Then I emailed it to the customer, telling him to ignore the emailed password.

As it happens, the first email arrived eventually. Once the customer had bought the file, he didn't get the email, and neither did we, so I made the downsized copy locally and emailed it him.

The Vetta file is more "authentic" - the man is chubby, with a bit of a double chin and a big nose. The cheap man doesn't look like a senior, more middle aged with powder in his hair.

Therefore, the Vetta is worth more, is it not? ;D

We're already auto-tweeting blog, flickr and FAA updates @picturemojo so we would be interested in adding Symbiostock related tweets.

Old article, new email shot by the look of it. Interesting, though.

Wooyay +2!

That search engine is looking very good! What's your logic for best match?

Now it is simple. When you enter phrase having two or more words, first go images with that phrase as single keyword or title, then images with all words as separate keywords. Images are sorted randomly to avoid grouping results from one site (random numbers are generated when images are indexed or updated in database). And images with huge number of keywords are pushed down.

OK, I wondered why we were almost invisible on a search for 'New Zealand'! We've split that phrase to work in the site search. On the other hand, thpstockphotos has dozens in your search but only five in the same search on his own site. Looks like we'll need to have both.

A small oddity I've just noticed: I've been going through the theme removing 'Royalty free' notices because we're also displaying RM pics.

When using the inbuilt all images page, as in http://www.picturemojo.co.nz/image/ the preview and image page icons don't display on hovering on the thumbnails. All the code seems to be in the page, as with the keyword and category searches, but no hover icons.

Symbiostock - Suggestions / Re: Paid Plugin Requests Here

We're now posting three classes of images - RF Budget, RF Premium and RM - and it would be really useful to have saved presets of the entire contents of Author Options.

http://blog.johnlund.com/2013/06/seo-advice-for-photographers.html
at least good timing with all the Symbiosites showing up :)

Just make sure your ad-blocker is turned on before going there. That site spawns pop-unders, pure spam.

We're just uploading some RM pics to PictureMojo and linking from the image page to Alamy for purchase, via the referral links for the image, and setting 'Not live' to hide the file sizes and prices.

I've just done something very similar, based on your idea:

http://ajotte.com/image/gdansk-4/

but I don't use "Not live" setting. Just when description contains tag with Alamy ref, price box is replaced by text box with link. I've deleted price table from popup. It is not there for all images. I don't see any side effect, and this table was not very useful :)

Agreed the product table is not really needed in the popup, so I've deleted it too. Also useful when that's done is to increase the popup size a little. I've added

Code: [Select]
.modal-body {
  max-height: 700px;
}

to style.css so no scroll bars any more. Login/Register is less cramped as well.

Also Leo is so mega-famous he even turned up on Boing Boing!

That's serious geek fame!

neato!

Nice bug. Speaking of bugs, what if we just put the SS ladybug pick over it? It will save me from having to do a larger fix to exclude those pics. Pagination as well as other things rely on it.

We don't want to hide the thumbs in the search results, just the file sizes and prices in the preview popup.

Not famous at all, believe me. But if one of my Orange Men walked into McDonalds, it would be all over twitter, though he would have a hard time singing autographs with his fingerless arms.

A lot of this stuff is just there by chance and what your seeing is the same thing thats going into Symbiostock - a lot of years learning how to promote on the net :D

I don't know who made that vector one, but it was there a few years ago. Wikianswers has a write-up too that made me 0 $ and I suspect no linkjuice either.

I am NOT famous. I live in a coffee shack sort of house in the woods, on water catchment and wireless internet. Also being one of the more positive MSG trolls tends to make things seem bigger than they are.

By definition, your only famous when you make a microstock decision or get your portfolio dumped, and a 100 page thread spawns on MSG over night.

Sounds a lot like New Zealand :)

Symbiostock - General / Re: Soliloquy light slider too small
« on: June 18, 2013, 03:38 »
Looks as if you're using a 2-column template for the home page, so the slider shrinks to fit. Change the template to 'Home page' and see what happens.

Unfortunately, these still appear in the Preview popup from the thumbnail pages. Can this be suppressed for 'Not live' images?

Once you get the white screen on everything, to fix it without a reinstall you need to get into the database. Most hosting setups have phpMyAdmin for this.

1. Fire up phpMyAdmin and select your database

2. Browse the wp_options table and find the option_name 'template' and 'stylesheet' rows which will have values symbiostock or symbiostock-child

3. Edit these both to twentytwelve

4. You should now be able to get back into your site. Delete and reinstall the symbiostock theme.

This is a popular pastime when tweaking Wordpress themes...

Off Topic / Re: Dreamstime- Poor Sales
« on: June 11, 2013, 18:51 »
Same here. My portfolio is small ( around 300 images ) but the sales are ok on SS, Fotolia, Canstock and 123RF. But Dreamstime...I celebrate if I sell a picture a month there!

Interesting. We hardly sell anything on FT, and never have. It just doesn't work for us. We've deleted almost everything, just left the few that do occasionally sell.

123 was also very poor, we deleted our portfolio when they reduced commissions.

I've always doubted that designers look around all that much, but maybe some do.

Why do people always complain about subs on DT and nowhere else when the return compares well to SS, FT, 123 and the IS PP?   Is it because the credit sales are so much better there compared to certain sites where there is hardly any difference between a sub and credit sale?

This is a good point. I must admit, I always feel disappointed when a level 4 or 5 sells as a sub, and pleased when I get SOD's on SS.
Maybe it's because DT started out as single sales and SS started out as subs.

I've been hit by selling a lot more subs than PPD. And I have to say that I can't understand how their similars policy can work well for us?  They have a lot less of my images than other sites, they have struggled to remain in the top 4 in the poll results here.  The images that reach the higher levels seem to encourage more buyers to switch to subs.  I'm sure lots of their buyers have gone to SS, to find a lot of the images that DT don't have.

They should of accepted more images and allowed buyers that only want to see one from each set to filter them out.  Instead of that, they've reduced the choice for all their buyers and I think that's going to take them out of the big 4 at some point.

Depends what you do. For what we do, having a lot of similars is pointless, it just dilutes sales and stops files reaching higher levels. I can understand why lifestyle photogs would want similars, but we have long since stopped producing similars for our food shots etc. We usually just do one of the complete object, designers can crop if they want. Food only has the one expression :)

We are quite pleased with DT.

We think their similars policy works well, although many don't agree.

Also, we like the fact that they sell a great variety of our images, rather then the same few over and over, their search seems to work well.

Of course, everything we have on there is less than a year old, having been IS exclusive, don't know if there is a search bias for newness.

BME in May, and this month off to a good start.

While this may not be a bug it is certainly a problem.  I would like the image options on the Symbiostock Images page to be changed.  The default option is currently "Trash".  It should be either edit or view.  See attached.

It's not a default, it's a warning. Nothing will happen until you deliberately click on one of those options.
