Amen to the above  ;)

Thanks. BTW - how do you manage to produce 10 pics for submission every day (unless this is a full time job for you  :o )?

StockXpert.com / Anyone experiences delays with approvals ?
« on: March 14, 2008, 07:21 »
I have a batch sitting on StockXpert for two weeks now. ( ??? Their system is confusing - all newly updated images have "Pending" status. Of course after upload I edit the pics (categories etc.) and press the "Submit" button   - but there is no actual confirmation that anything has changed - the image is still "Pending".  ???)  Previous batches have been approved much faster - but now they really slowed down. Anyone ?

StockXpert.com / Re: StockXpert site in firefox with bugs?
« on: March 14, 2008, 07:04 »
I have the bug too: Windows XP Home Edition, Mozilla Firefox.

Edit: I meant the bug described by OP. As a side issue - Windows itself is a big bug too, but that's a topic for another discussion ;D

"I have read a few times that istock seem to reject images that sell very well  on other sites."

Could be. Different images sell differently on different sites. This is afct (although based exclusively on my personal observations - so I could be wrong).

IS - I would not suspect the reviewers of ulterior motives - but again I am not submitting to IS yet (another 40 days before I am eligible for my 6th try  :D )

StockXpert - right on the money. They actually care to tell exactly why the image was rejected. I have very good acceptance rate recently and hardly any rejections - but the beginning it was the other way around.

SS - sometimes weird rejections, and hard to figure out why. OTOH - after initial submissions were mostly rejected - couple of last batches have been accepted 100%. While rejections may put you off at times - it can be hardly denied that SS knows what sells and how to sell, so I do not hold any grudges - but rather try to submit what I think SS likes. At any case - 85% of my (admittedly small) portfolio had sales on SS so far.

Thanks  :)

General Stock Discussion / If you need to delete a photo...
« on: March 11, 2008, 04:55 »
Can anyone clarify 123RF and Dreamstime in particular ? These marked "can do" offer the facility to delete an image directly.

Shutterstock - can do
Dreamstime - not sure, there is a "Disable" button
123RF - no (maybe E-mail request can be sent, not sure)
BigStock - need to send E-mail request
CanStock - can do
Fotolia - can do
Stockxpert - can do
Featurepics - there is facility to request deletion
Mostphotos - can do.

It seems that indeed there is a lot of confusion going on.

To start with - very few monitors can actually reproduce AdobeRGB colors (some expensive Eizos can and maybe top of the line NEC Spectravision, there may be some more). Most monitors do well if they come close to reproducing sRGB.

When working in AdobeRGB, you do not see AdobeRGB colors - if they are out of the monitor gamut (but still within gamut for AdobeRGB).
Even when they are within sRGB gamut, the situation is the same, because the same (r,g,b) values in AdobeRGB and sRGB basically mean different colors - to the eye, or to a spectrophotometer.

At this point calibration and profiling of the monitor enters. Calibration being the proper setup of R,G and B guns , setting black and white points and color temperature. Profiling being setting up a LUT table to provide corrections between measured and expected colors on the screen. So - calibration and profiling are not the same thing, and are frequently mixed up. Let's assume at this point that our hardware is calibrated and profiled - in short, that it can reproduce sRGB space (or is close to it).

Now - assume that we work in AdobeRGB color space, in COLOR MANAGED application. The application still can't display full AdobeRGB gamut on the monitor - but it will make some intelligent (non-linear) mapping of colors into sRGB - because it KNOWS that the working color space is AdobeRGB. And these colors are displayed properly by our (calibrated and profiled) monitor. And all is good with the world.

Now - you post the file (AdobeRGB color space) on the net. The software which displays the file usually does not care about color space and assumes sRGB - which means that it treats the (r,g,b) numbers literally. No information is actually lost - just is interpreted in a simple way. You may end up with washed out colors and color shifts.

When, however, the file is CONVERTED from AdobeRGB to sRGB prior to uploading - the "intelligent" treatment of the AdobeRGB colors by the color aware application is preserved - because in the process of converting, the (r,g,b) numbers are actually changed -  as compared to the original AdobeRGB file.  At this point one only hopes that the monitor used for display, somewhere in the world, is actually calibrated and profiled. In which case someone will see an image pretty similiar to what you intended him to see.

In essence - work in AdobeRGB, and CONVERT to sRGB before uploading. Uploading AdobeRGB file is usually a recipe for misinterpretation. If sRGB file is uploaded - all the user needs is to have his monitor calibrated and (hopefully) profiled.

I hope that by posting this lengthy explanation I haven't added to the confusion  ;D

Some will tell you that shooting JPEG and getting it "right out of the box" is the way to go. In a sense they are right, since post-processing a large number of pics can be very time consuming. OTOH, it is difficult - and not always possible, so I shoot RAW. For PS, I wrote a number of actions to speed up the process. For instance - one action to create all adjustment levels. Then a number of actions for sharpening. Also - an action for saving the processed TIFF file (Edit - Convert to sRGB- Mode - 8bit - Save as JPEG). This may not appear to be much - but saves a lot of clicks. Try to automate some most frequent and repetitive functions - it helps a lot.

Also (as said above), if you process your images, then doing it as 16bit TIFF is the way to go. Save to JPEG just for uploading. And add keywords as early as possible - I do it in TIFF stage.

Software - General / Re: Photoshop CS2 or CS3
« on: March 05, 2008, 21:41 »
More of 16 bit processing and if I am not mistaken - inclusion of new RAW conversion (I think it came from RAWShooter engine - pity it is only a partial implementation - although with some enhancements too).

Same here (Fotolia all of a sudden stopped for me). I have uploaded 3 batches of images since my last sale at Fotolia, got them accepted, still no cigar... >:(

163
I know - I need to keep uploading. No big problem here - for now I have plenty of ideas and got two more batches accepted w/o rejections (OK, there was one). But couple of pics are doing very well - and one is on the front search page. Just look for "waterfall". At any case it makes for a nice change - compared to some other sites.

Mostphotos.com / Re: MostPhotos playing with legal fire
« on: March 02, 2008, 07:58 »
Well - I can't say how it looks elsewhere, but here (NSW, Australia) taking and publication of a person's photograph without their consent is perfectly legal. There is no Bill of Rights here. Although, it is highly advisable to obtain release for any COMMERCIAL purposes.

Also - you CAN'T photograph on private land without consent. One should also know  the distinction between public land  and publicly accessible private land.

Here comes the interesting point: in Australia there is no concept of ownership over the appearance of architectural spaces. Which means that ALL buildings - private and public - are fair game for NON-COMMERCIAL purposes.

The interesting bit  - commercial use does NOT mean the sale of a picture, but rather the use of likeness (person or object) to endorse product or service.

In addition - the Copyright Act does not prohibit any kind of photography.

"In Australia still-photographs of 3D objects such as performances, buildings, statues or interior spaces (and the people in them), generally cannot infringe copyright, as one-off images cannot reproduce a substantial enough portion of the original work. The only way to infringe copyright in these cases is to create a sufficiently similar 3D copy, or with respect to dramatic works, lengthy video recording " (quote from "NSW Photographer's Rights by Andrew Nemeth BSc (Hons) LLB).

Complicated enough ? I guess it is. At any case - I have lived long enough to know that justice is a commodity like everything else: you may get it if your pockets are deep enough. Which means that in all likelihood you are bound to loose the case if confronted by people or organization big and powerful enough - simply because they can ruin you while you fight for your rights.

"About every micro site now knows that the Brussels' atomium is copyrighted."

If it is copyrighted - why don't they remove it from public view ? I understand that copying the design for the purpose of building something that looks very similiar could get someone in trouble (although the concept of Atomium is hardly original as such).  But - why all of a sudden people claim the ownership of light reflected from an object ?

In such case I should copyright my eyes - and claim damages from the owner(s) of every copyrighted building or object - since I have no duty to view what they cared to put in public view.

Some may say this is idiotic - but no more idiotic than copyrighting the reflected light.

Copying a car design for the purpose of building a car - yes, a clear cut court case.
Taling a picture of a car - c'mon...

I have no argument with the need to obtain a release for a picture of a person or interior of a private property. But the exterior of any building, public or private, as long as it is visible to general public - should be a fair game.

Adobe Stock / Re: How do I make Fotolia Work?
« on: March 01, 2008, 20:08 »
I just keyword all my images with Fotolia in mind. Other sites either keep the order of keywords (which is OK) - or re-order them as they see fit (alphabetical). This way I save myself hassle. The only problem is that with some places titles are limited to 64 characters, the description has to be a minimum of 7 words etc. - but generally Fotolia does not give me any hassle with uploading (and with acceptance, after initial problems).

Shutterstock.com / First 100 downloads at SS (big smile here)
« on: March 01, 2008, 19:45 »
So - after 12 days with only 23 images online - the first miserly target is reached  ;D
Hopefully it will continue (?) - since I uploaded (and got approved) more images.

With all due respect to "perfect images" - but images are not being used at 100% magnification. Sure, a decent level of quality is a must, but a lot of images rejected due to "artifacts" print perfectly OK at 12"x8" size. There is a lot more to an image than pixel peeping and looking for "jaggies" at 100%. Particularly, when in a lot of cases "jaggies" and "artifacts" are just part and parcel of digital imaging - this is to say that they are not what they are called, but just normal effects due to the fact that the image is built from individual pixels. OK, I am awaiting flaming now  ;D

Mostphotos.com / Re: really starting to hate your "ratings" system
« on: February 28, 2008, 23:14 »
Madelaide - this is fine with me. But then - a quality inspection has to be introduced. The buyer does not have a duty to put up with images which may not meet some basic requirements. I am not a big fan of pixel peeping in order to determine whether or not there are "artifacts" present - but I honestly believe that some acceptance criteria must be at work - or the site will vanish very quickly.

General - Top Sites / Re: Why are sales disappearing ?
« on: February 28, 2008, 17:19 »
On SS - I think it may have something to do with time zones. When I move into the next day - SS site is still "yesterday". So "Today" and "Yesterday" may get mixed up when I click on a "Sold by Month" button. At least this is my conclusion - observing which image sold last on the previous day and which disappeared from "Today" listing.

Me says: wait and see. What Mostphotos does is certainly different - and a smart alghrithm can probebly gauge the PEOPLE's response to a photo better than one reviewer (although it can't guarantee quality). Wait and see...

Mostphotos.com / Re: What is happening with Mostphotos ?
« on: February 28, 2008, 04:45 »
Australia - but I was not concerned with speed, but with VERY distinct deterioration of the site's behaviour over the last couple of days.  Various parts and functions of the site have been drastically slowing down, one by one. I do not think that my location has anything to do with it - I am getting all European sites very quickly. And why was ScandinavianStockSite address showing up ?

Edit: whatever was done to the hardwate/software (see Arian's post above) obviously worked: the site is back to its usual speed  :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Mostphotos.com / What is happening with Mostphotos ?
« on: February 28, 2008, 04:14 »
For the last couple of days the site was getting slower and slower - and now dropped off the net altogether. in the beginning - it was operating OK. Then it started loading slowly, but once there - it was OK. Then - getting into member's profile started taking a lot of time.  A day or two later - the images started loading slowly and/or not displaying all. Today - I can't even connect.  At the same time - no problem whatsoever with any of the other sites. What is going on ?

Edit: BTW, I have noticed that ScandinavianStockPhoto.com is address is showing up at the bottom of the screen when I click on Mostphoto shortcut: again - strange, but maybe someone knows what is going on ?

Well...I have mixed feeling on the subject. I got into SS on the third try, and the reviewers proved to be very consistent. Basically - in every next try I resubmitted the previously accepted images, with new ones replacing those which had been rejected.  Out of 6 previously accepted images - only one was rejected in the next attempt. To me this spells consistency and well established standards.

After that - I have uploaded 60+ images, and got only 23 accepted. Of the rejected ones - about 50% I expected to be knocked back, just wanted to get the feel for the site. The other 50% of the rejected ones I am going to resubmit - as they are no worse than the 23 accepted ones. In fact some are better.

But - I have no argument with SS for sure. The 23 accepted images produced almost 100 downloads within the first 10 days, and only 5 images have no sales yet. From that perspective - it appears that SS people know what sells and are pretty consistent with reviews - as stated above.

For my next upload - I tried to analyze the rejection reasons, and submitted 14 new images which I thought would be OK - and 13 of them got accepted.

I know that different sites work differently for different people - so all I said above is true and applicable in MY CASE.

General - Top Sites / Why are sales disappearing ?
« on: February 27, 2008, 22:00 »
I am not talking about sales in general, but specifically about recorded sales.
Recently I had one case on 123RF and one on SS: a sale was listed for an image - and couple of hours later it disappeared from the list, with the sales total figure going back.  Anyone can shed some light on this ? Some server/cache refreshing issues with my comp (at least with SS, where the numbers went back up) ?

But on 123RF the sale just disappeared, which I can't explain.
