what sort of thing sells best (me and everyone else!), learn time my submissions (what's the best month to upload Christmas images etc?)

hello:)
in reply to when to upload for christmas?

right now is pretty much beginning to see downloads on yuletide images.

as for ur resume, i agree with PixelBytes, go with Stocksy, Offset,...
but nothing wrong in trying sub sites,
just split the good stuff for high paying sites, and the zero-cost stuff for sites that pays penis pennies.

getting in to SS is not hard. it took me first try to get in, after 5 years with the other top 10 at that time. so u already have that apprenticeship . just give them 10 variety of categories rather than 10 same old same old of one item shot in different angles.
gave them a good mix (to show what you can do).. ie. lifestyle, isolated, industrial, food, architecture, travel, ...and editorial.  and make sure your exposure and compostion are spot on.

as for sharpness, noise. if u shoot with the sweet spot of the lens u use, and optimum ISO for your specific camera, using the correct exposure setting...(shadow for film, highlight for digital)..
u should have little problem about sharpness and noise.
and will not should not do anything sharpening or noise reduction .
your post processing will only involve the little bit of cc if necessary and cropping, giving u
clean images to submit to SS, Stocksy, Offset.

really, if u cannot get past SS, you are sure not to get to Stocksy or Offset.

the last part, i really should not have said , since by now, you would have already got that intact.
atb.

p.s.
u can send me a barrel of Guinness draught after u make ur first grand !!!

"By submitting my photographs to Dreamstime.com for publication in their web site galleries for sale, I relinquish all copyrights and rights to sell and/or use the Media that has been submitted.

"Relinquish all copyrights"?  Uh, no thank you.

mr. locke, if i am not mistaken,
the OP is mixing up the regular submission with the monthly photo-assignment.

1504
Do all images submitted to Dreamstime now have to be submitted on an exclusive basis and not also licensed through any other microstock distributor? A friend who is trying to start submitting to Dreamstime found this in their TOS. "By submitting my photographs to Dreamstime.com for publication in their web site galleries for sale, I relinquish all copyrights and rights to sell and/or use the Media that has been submitted. I acknowledge that in exchange for this copyright release, Dreamstime.com is obligated to award a fee for each image submitted and accepted by Dreamstime.com and that the agency will set the fee for each assignment."

I though most people who have images on Dreamstime also have the same images with other distributors. It sure sounds like they want exclusive rights to any images submitted now. According to the language the photographer can't even license use of the image directly to a customer himself. Maybe it is just sloppy legal language that they expect no one to read. All comments will be appreciated.

reading ur comment carefully, i figure u r not referring to the regular upload of work to dt,
but more in relation to just the monthly assignment.

yes, in this monthly contest, u relinquish all rights if u win.

as others mentioned, it is like everyday is a weekend with SS these past months.

ah yes, a reviewer or official in disguise. new member LMAO.

and back to topic, what do you call the rest of those here who are in consensus to me???

New Sites - General / Re: new site stocktal
« on: September 08, 2014, 16:08 »
i just came out of checking out the site. they have a nice setup and it looks fast and easy to upload. i like the black design and they do have some impressive work . . .and of course, some tons of similars.
i am tempted to apply with them on my first 10 and see how it works.

i know Jo Ann and Sue have pointed out some concerns. still, let's wait to see what they respond.

on my part, i checked a couple of obvious editorials , but i dont see any note saying those images are editorial only. or perharps the "talent" does not know it's supposed to be editorials, since there is in fact an option of RF, RM, editorials, free.

pricing is appealing . and sure, we all say a big chunk of nothing = nothing. then again, with all the old boys club of top tier agencies so out to f*** us up, we really should give some of these new chaps a try. Or just quit ms, altogether.

+1 in agreement  with Jo Ann Snover ( supporting a selection of new ones that appear to be (a) serious efforts and (b) reasonably funded is in our best interests).

Jo Ann, (to answer your last statement... i found the site has both RF ; RM;  Editorials; options. )

lastly, yes me too, wonder about the 10% tax.  as usual, Ms. Snover hits every detail , bravo !!!

Anyone here who is self-employed must realize you cannot rely/depend/hope/expect the people you do business with to look after your own interests....and if they fail in that you sell to someone else or you find something else to sell.

I appreciate that may seem too simplistic and unpalatable for many contributors - but this has been a cold hard truth in microstock for years. If you haven't experienced that elsewhere in business then I can understand the degree of umbrage expressed here - but for many I suspect the energy and time wasted trying to bring SS or any other agency into line with their own expectations is more profitably deployed elsewhere.

ah yes...
but it is , to many, better to rant and roar to each other, like those commuters during the bus-strike.
n as soon as the bus arrives, they get in the bus and wish the bus-driver with a nice smile, "oh how r u this luvly morning???" :D :D :D

I am sorry, but your reply is as amateurish as your site. The best way to get contributors on board is to mock them, surely. If you want to make it in this business, thick skin is a must, as critique and criticism are undoubtedly part of it.

well, personally, i think we had quite enough of "professional(s)" with the gift of political double-speak.   ,don't u think? ;)

Jack-Stocktal, welcome to msg :D
ur site looks interesting , and as said, something new in-line with Stocksy, in the good sense of aiming away from the status-quo of dropping pennies into photographers while making big bucks for themselves. so that is yet another fresh air like Canva and Stocksy.
just browse your portfolios and notice something i did not quite like
...
get 500 px free

can u pls explain this promo. hopefully this is not the direction Stocktal is aiming ..
instead u r projecting a mission to make money 70% to photographer/30% to Stocktal.

i take it , like Stocksy and Canva, u will need an invitation,
or more so, submit the first 10 like SS to be approved.
then on, it's clear - sailing and hoperfully money for everyone.
do u have a marketing mission in just Australia or is this global too?

cheers , hope u succeed, as any site that believes contributors should make money
is always welcome and i hope u will also join Canva and Stocksy in success.
gawd almighty, we really need competition to replace those penny - pinchers in the top tier;)

I have over $110 in the account(set up to pay out at 75(unless that number is ignored?), and it is set up correctly. I waited 6 weeks for the next payout time and it never went in so I faxed them a physical request for payment with signature about 10 days ago.

I figure I'll quit contributing and if it gets to a higher amount I'll have an attorney threaten them or something if it EVER gets to a remotely reasonable amount. *But I will send letters into the IRS if they keep sending me Tax papers and not paying me!

SS have lately done a lot of questionable things (100% rejection inconsistency, flipping of switch,etc..)
but here, with regards to being paid, I am equivocally 100% for SS.

SS always pays you when you reach the payout
. I have not heard about anyone not being paid by SS.  This much I can say.

Hi Scott,

Unfortunately none of this or the links you provided explain the sudden and sustained drop in sales, and I mean a significant drop. You have a lot of players here stating the same thing, like a light switch went on, and sales tanked. That's what we are referring to not key wording, or timing, etc. to be honest, I think there was a business decision made, SS knew some key contributors would be hit, and that's it......all for the betterment of "something"

Just asking.

so if Getty wins, can this turn around and have those contributors who got screwed by Getty to claim a share of that money?
there must be something for photographers in this. Getty sues Microsoft, photographers class-sue Getty???

Alex, if a photographer does upload to prime and offer the image via the RF license model can he pull the image out of prime at a later date.  Some entities have a certain amount of time that an image must be left up to avoid people popping images on and off for short periods.  I ask this because I want to know if after 6 months or a year if an image has had no action on 500prime but say a personal client wants to use if for a traditional RM license can I remove it from 500prime?

I don't forsee this happening much if at all.  Just want to know what my options are.

Totally, you can remove it at anytime. Just beware that since our sales team may be working on sales in the background, we retain the right to sell your image within 45 days after you've removed it. This will be fairly rare, but it's just incase we're working on a deal with a buyer at the time that you remove the photos. Cheers!

in reference to your response, Alex, i don't think anyone would mind receiving an email requesting the image back on because of a sale (ie. in particular $259 framed image) . in my case, i would not move the images to RM or anything, except in cases of leaving it there and having no sales for a certain period.
if u can tell me, pls...  is there any way we know how many visitors came to see the image?
not the Like or Love or Follow, whatever.. but more so the clients who come in to browse for framed images.    this is where i am not a big fan of social-media, because i think it is difficult to see where your market is.

personally, i wish your agency distant yourself with social-media all in one stop-shop ,flickr, facebook, and be serious about making money rather than traffic; if that is  your business-objective .
this , ...and an auto watermark ...might increase your contributorship.

lastly, the time-turnaround for approvals. i don't see anywhere mentioning that, as it appears like no one knows whether the submitted works in Store is even curated.

thx in advance, many questions, only because i like 500px ... except for the above  ;)

1518
welcome to the ruthless S&M world of ms  ;D
as for * with SS, here is the good news...
new images are not selling at all. most, or some of us, have more or less sat on our ar$e for months
since one no longer has to feed the beast.

secondly, is SS a big earner for most of us? yes. but that is only if u got in early to have your placement in the search , and now, u r just cruising with those images found on page 1.

thirdly, i do not think the trend to needing SS to make money in ms is ongoing, from the consensus of long-serving contributors who have been complaining of either having their new works rejected en masse, or having little or no earnings to their new images.
there is a trend moving AWAY from SS rather than TO SS, with an eye for the more recent agencies
with a new vision ( Stocksy, if u can get in, Pond5, Canva, etc)
ie, agencies that hopefully u will see earnings of less dl but more commissions per dl,
as subs continue to be the flavour of the day with SS, and now IS.

whatever, cheer up mate... as Brian says,

For life SS is quite absurd
And death's drop in earnings/mass rejections the final word
"life's a piece of sh*t ... when u look at it !!! ;D

Yea that's Uncle Pete.
 He's a smart guy.

well, now that u mentioned it... :D
sometimes, um, actually, many times, smart guys are the last to know when the bottom has fallen out  ;)

i know that, because my eldest cousin is like one of those high IQ , genius, smart guy..etc
and always stuck with his pants down in a emergency .
He has to have the fire burning up his pants before he will agree there is something happening  ;D ;D ;D

I think my port is pretty simple and easy and that's why I don't get  a lot of sales.

I'm not a professional photographer like a lot of u. I'm retired from my job in manufacturing. I don't do this year round I have other things in the fire that I do to make extra .

no need to apologize for something you worked hard.
perharps it is just that, ie. pretty simple and easy.    which was my first impression when i browse your work.  could you not combine some of the simple and easy and make it look more which a client might just have use ? go for quality as opposed to quantity?

see what sold for you, and go with those in a more elaborate manner?

just wondering  ;)

If they have nothing to hide they can re enable the TOP 50 images again so that every one can see which ports the search currently favors.

I don't really understand that thing you have about the top 50.
If you want to see which images are favored by the search, do a search and see what appears first...

What he is saying is that the top 50 really never changed much over the years, or changed very rarely here and there.  You could click on any of those images and see the artist, their port, how long they have been with SS, etc.  Now the top 50 is gone because Shutterstock does not want us to see that those top 50 are no longer the top 50. The top 50 is likely now replaced by new contributors which would be proof of our theory.  Gablex's assumptions are, in my opinion, correct. They killed the top 50 so that we could not verify that they indeed changed the search to punish the long timers and see that they are replaced by new contributors, perhaps once who required special deals in the search over us long timers as a side deal for them to come over to SS. There can really be no other explanation. Today was another disaster for me on SS by the way. The way things are going I will make $350 this month, 500 less than normal. It really is that bad for me.

+1  +1  +1

ah yes, yes, yes,
but ...
there is someone who is amongst us who keep telling us we are trolls against SS,
and that our imagination of the switch being flipped is yet another one of our whines and trolls.

i can see why SS would turn the switch off for regular sellers in favour of newbies. they pay them less, and they (newbies) will be reporting BME every month when their monthly sales go from  zero to five .
as i said before, the first batch of  opium  is always free.

1522
oh  i certainly vote for the xray , but only for the people i want to see without clothes,  ;D

seriously, i vote for an auto covering that closes the body cavity, or maybe a mechanism that flips the sensor over  ,... once it senses you turning the lense to remove it. this way, the sensor dirt will be history.

1523
2. If #1 happens, they lose buyers so the next question is can they attract new buyers to replace them? There are A LOT of small buyers and they will likely end up over at SS. So I see potential volume as a whole going down if pricing goes up too far.
It looks to me like pricing is coming down to compete with SS, I don't see how they would lose buyers to them with the new pricing.  SS charges 9 to 15 dollars per image for image packs, 1 credit at iStock probably will be less expensive than that don't you think?

ya thunk? the race to the bottom continues, how cool is that?

consensus being neither IS nor SS will lose out , since bottom-feeders will now see increase too in their IS port as with SS. bigger earners will lose big time (as with SS already )
but both sites will still look good, as already pointed out,
this industry is never photographer-friendly.

the resounding echo, "to please our clients" ...

pick those days to submit to SS.
looking on the bright side of monty python,
with SS your chances r much higher than winning the lottery

This looks like a big kick in the teeth for the high quality images.

high quality and microstock should never be in the same sentence.

it will force people shooting expensive sets to move to
Getty or higher paying agencies, which is where they belong actually.

the microstock's perimeter should not invade their other business, i see the logic in this move and i agree 100%.

+1 except i negated the part of Getty... to maybe include (         ) whichever new site(s)  ;)non-elites ;) that is brave enough to take on the ever sinking earnings set by the top tier.

really, the SS cheerdogs (oops sorry, IS never can do no right cheerteam) keep talking through both sides of their mouths. they keep asking SS for more money with their ever-lifting bar and anal
reviews of higher standards, yet they keep poo-pooing on lower standards for subs earnings
...
as with here, high quality images LMAO

what is it that u really really(repeat) really want, dudes/dudas???
or do u really know???
