I just sold my third "russian flag" over a few weeks.  Looks like a piece of camouflage material to me, and doesn't have russian or flag. once was funny, 2nd time odd, now its weird :)  I think I have put some pictures of russian flags on :)

BTW - I have just sold a picture of a Christmas Tree... :-)))))))))))

I have sold at least one picture of easter eggs every week for the last year (including selling one on dec 24 and dec 26 (but not 25th :)

I reckon I have sold as many 'hearts' etc type images since valentines days as I did before it, well it would be close anyway (I think it was those guys that got in trouble for forgetting valentines day :)

and I sold christmas decs about an 1 hour ago :)

I'm exclusive at istock and my sales are down a bit on January but not hugely - they have been very very volatile though - some really good days, and some shockers. If I have a few more of the good days it's conceivable I could equal the January sales figures, but it's more likely I'll be down around ten per cent. I do have a small portfolio, which is therefore subject to swings. And my best seller has just dropped off the most popular files page so it's sales have tanked, and I expected a slow down   (some mean *insult removed* gave it a 4/5, knocking it out of the top fifteen ! - but it had six months of free pimping so I can't complain)

post a link and we'll bang it back up there :)

You can't! Even if 1000 people rated it 5/5, the single 4/5 rating would kill it from the most popular files page. (lots of other much better files with higher numbers of 5/5 ratings have been dropped back in the same way - if someone gives a 1/5 rating, on an otherwise well rating and downloaded file then  admin will generally overturn it  but a 4/5 is a bit hard to argue with)

yep sorry for that one.  I hit reply early in the thread and read later how the system works and realised my mistake and forgot to go back.

Alamy.com / Re: Alamy Questions
« on: February 26, 2008, 22:19 »
hi, yes I have issues with this ethically.  about half my alamy collection is on micro.  I was deleting images from micros if they sold on alamy, in the view that someone would then never see it. But then one of my best sellers on micro sold at a small size on alamy, my cut was what less than what I make in a month, so I couldn't bring myself to delete it.

I spoke to about 20-30 people that I know (none of them photogs) what they thought.  every single one of them said that to sell it both.  most of them saying about different prices at different shops and how they'd been ripped off somewhere.  Personally though there is a lot of difference between $5 and $350.  (although alamy rf = full extended licence so $100+  on istock but cheaper elsewhere)

My wife and a few other microstockers I know point to fact that there is quite a number of people doing both, including some of the higher profile photogs.  but that is saying 'well they do it so can I'

1 person I know says you might as well make the money from both now, because the macro will be dead within 5 years and you wont be able to then.

so, I do it, but it is something I am uncomfortable about.

hmm, I was pretty pleased to get 5 in one day yesterday :):)

yay one got 17!

saw a comment on ss forum where ss said that only submitters can see the top 50 list (like their forum) so it doesn't affect sales...

I had my rant the other day, and have been not real happy with ft but with a surge of l/xl/xxl sales last two days I've gone from a pretty low month to just hit bme. waiting to see what the ranking puts me :)

hmm....  I mentioned low sales at LO then had 3 sales in the next day. I mentioned that I think i'm doing well if I get 5 sales for 1 image in a day on ss, then the next day had one with 17 and one with 11 (and my best day in 3 months)

I've got it!!!!, My sales are linked to my comments here!!! I need to complain about a site here and then my sales go up.  happened 3 times so far.  right here we go bloody StockXpert, bloody istock, ... :):):)

hope things pick up for you too :)

Duncan,
2 questions:
Does  this new site support "subscriptions"? If so does this mean that we might be seeing 8 - 10 cent proceeds?
What if our portfolios are already on that site?
Thx

Its good to see some movement and ideas for going ahead, but whether they are in a position to do so will remain to be seen. personally they are not a big earner so if I get more sales then great, if it goes bad then it isn't big loss.

culling 100k-250k images from a 650k database doesn't seem the smartest move, and once someone falls to 49.9% thats it they're gone? I see losing a number of people from not a big pool while new standards are met / worked out etc. (but i do wonder how long before other sites bring in policies where people with consistantly low quality get cut off)

I agree with anon though, are we talking subscription sales too?

I really hope you can reorder keywords after an image is submitted :) (funny limit to 15 words, I reckon I have had their keyword suggester put in 15 keywords on some images :):)

well, if you can't make this one, we'll probably do more of them in different areas of the world. Just need to decide where the next place should be.  Suggestions welcomed. :)

australia!!! or new zealand?

but hopefully by the next I will be making enough to go anywhere (nothing like optimism :):)

US$3000 a ticket to Moscow? I don't think it is so expensive... is it?  We buy tickets from Brazil to Western Europe for US$1100-1500 off-season (such as April).  Can it be that from there to Moscow is about the same price?

Anyway, although Moscow (Russia in general) is in my wish list, I don't think I'll make it to this meeting.

Maybe next one is in Rio de Janeiro?  ;D

Regards,
Adelaide

hi, even though I was a bit high, it is still a bit sad.  au$400 return for me to sydney, then $2300 return sydney to moscow. oh well :)

« on: February 25, 2008, 20:02 »
I have used a number of laptops, that have all been a bit dark.  Then I bought a philips 19" which was unbelievably bright.  Personally I need to get a better calibrator than my cheapo colorplus one (I need to stop photoshop updating and reseting the proof to working cymk - aarggh!! :)

Anyway, there is a lot of inspectors on a quite a number of sites so I would expect a fair bit of variation, but for pc users the 24" dells seem popular for microstockers (and the dell 19" ultrasharps to a lesser extent). Not sure about mac users heard the 24" cinema displays mentioned a number of times.

new products = ???

I like the thankyou for letting us represent your work. Kinda nice, sometimes I feel that agencies (both macro / micro) seem to be think I should be really grateful that will represent my work and it is nice to see the manners and attitude. hmm but then again, some of the rubbish I have put out, I probably should be thankful :):)

I had the sd port die on my k100d.  took about week and half (inc time in mail) to be fixed under warranty.  Whether it was because of taking card in or out, I'll never know. it happened when that camera had taken about 3-4000 images so I guess was a problem originally with camera especially considering I've never heard of anyone else having the problem and I know of people taking 50000-80000 images per year.

Off Topic / Re: My new website
« on: February 24, 2008, 06:19 »
Hi,

I like the site, especially the splash / front page.

But...

i didn't like the womans head on right of the portraiture page, sort of disembodied, didn't really fit with the rest of the page.

the sports page looks a little cluttered I think because of alignment of text / boxs / pics.  title needs centring, the two top banners are wider the columns underneath.  the text down the middle I think needs a little bit wider margins. put your email along the bottom. I'd try putting your lhs text boxes along the bottom and then pics down both sides (might not work, maybe you already did).

(oops, I'm nitpicking sorry, I just felt this page sort let the rest of the site down, and I'm not trying to critisice coz I like you site and I have procrastinated about doing it for 6-12 months)

Rgds

I wonder if you can provide a link to that post?

this is the main one, there are a few others as well, with titles 'keywords' etc

http://www.fotolia.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=9570

very simply,

first 7 keywords count (although I do have a few images that use words after the 7, and images that dont use within the 7  ???)
changing the order after it has been submitted has no effect as there database is not reindexed.  You have to contact support if you want this done. (however they just asked me to supply every image number that is a problem with examples of searches for each image that I felt they should appear within - for 2000 images ??? (I had told them 2000 images - so am rewording my request and asking again)
Images may only be submitted once according to fotolia, so even delete and resubmit is apparently not acceptable - apparently people are being told no on resubmit as it has been on before.

and of course they have tighter standards now, since their competition was announced my acceptance  dropped to around 50%.  and my last batch which was just after having a complain about the keyword situation I had 2 out of 20 accepted (19 of 20 at 123 and ss, 20 of 20 most other places, images refused for technical quality that istock have accepted???) maybe just coincidence???

basically their view is, get it right first time. (even though when you look at one of your images at the top "It's one of your files, you can index it" this puts you to the edit data screen where you have the reorder keywords.  Just another broken bit of the site?)

it is stated by fotolia's forum moderators that reordering doesn't change anything. you have to get it right before you hit submit

How many sales of one image are you likely to need to get into the top 50?

last I heard probably sept / oct??? I think people were talking around the 50 mark depending on the week.

ouch! I am the first to admit that I have some garbage photos, but that would have been a deleter (and I would hope no one was watching over my shoulder to have seen that I even took it). I dont understand how you put something like that on the web let alone expect someone to pay for it. wow.
