None of the commission rates on DT make sense to me to be perfectly honest. I have yet to see a simple explanation of what I am getting paid for sales. Right now I am looking at a 1 credit sale I was paid .23 for, just below it a 1 credit sale I'm paid .25 for, next a 5 credit sale I received .91 (18%).
All those were level 0 sales. All paid at different rates all within a short period of time for each other.
On the topic at hand I've got a level 4 sub sale at .70, a level 1 at .35, a level 5 at $1.05.
How does anyone make any sense of it?

Might be time to switch to decaf. I was just commenting on the topic at hand buddy. Happy New Year. Mat Fotolia has always paid photographers the full commission rate even on promotional credits they give away for free.
A little history lesson.
Right, they don't cut the full commissions on sales, they just do stupid things like this to screw the artists:
Meanwhile I found 3 Images in my bestselling 100 set back to 1 Credit basic price for non selling. Well, FT, this is my answer: they go to all other agencies what can sell them! You get them first and exclusive and you can't sell them. That's not my problem it's yours.
With best regards.
That's ironic considering that they plan on knocking our images back to 1 credit if we sell them on other sites for less than they do.
(quoting the Fotolia site:) If Fotolia becomes aware that a non exclusive contributor with a rank of Emerald or above is distributing any images, vectors or videos (the Works) through another stock agency or website (where at least some of such Works are the same as the Works being distributed through Fotolia), and if the pricing charged on such other stock agency or website for the downloading of any of such contributors Works are comparatively lower than the pricing charged on Fotolia for downloading Works of White ranking contributors, then, subject to applicable law, Fotolia reserves the right, at its discretion, to lower the pricing of any of such contributor's Works offered through Fotolia so as to match the pricing for the Works of White ranking contributors on Fotolia. Subject to applicable law, Fotolia reserves the right to inquire, from time to time, with any given contributor with a rank of Emerald or above as to whether such contributor is distributing any Works through any other stock agency or website, and such contributor shall promptly provide this information to Fotolia. For clarity, Fotolia is under no obligation to make any such inquiries.
We've been citing Fotolia's base rate as 16%, based on Leaf's excellent analysis at the beginning of this year. I've just realised that his calculation was done when "white" was at the pretend 25% rate. It has since been reduced to a pretend 20% so the 16% has to be reduced by a fifth.
Just thought people might like to know.
2011 Commission Cuts:
Dear Fotolia Contributor, 2010 was another record year for the Fotolia community. We set new all-time highs for the number images in our collection, the number of members, and photographer royalty payouts. For 2011, we're implementing some changes in efforts to continue this trend.
Competition in the market is increasing, both amongst the photographers in the community, and amongst stock photography agencies. We've been monitoring the situation carefully, and have continued to increase our marketing spend in the number and frequency of ad campaigns. In addition, Fotolia continued its international leadership in new markets, with the opening of the Russian and Chinese web sites. With the increase in sales, the velocity of the rank changes has also accelerated. In order to sustain our continued efforts in marketing, we are making some changes to the royalty structures at the mid and lower tiers next week.
Fotolia continues to maintain photographer commissions at a significantly higher than those of our major competitors, and our increased efforts in marketing will result in an even higher velocity towards increased rankings.
Please note also that our new recency filter gives some priority to newer and fresher content, which means that the best new photographers with fresh content will have a better chance of rising to the higher ranks.
Thanks for your continued support, and we look forward to a great 2011 together.
Sincerely, Fotolia.com

Did Fotolia just changed the upper limit for EL license for emerald contributors or is just me? Used to be 200, now the upper limit is 100... What's going on? No announcements, no explanations... I am getting sick of this.
Reranked without notice thread, Dec 2008:
Now we are talking about a company led by a man who
1. Instituted subscription sales and tried to pay us 22 cents per download when the current market rate was 30 cents
2 . recently made unannounced attempts to take away referral earnings
3. Changed the ranking levels with no discussion and no annuncment just as a significant number of long time contributors where on the threshold of reaching their goals.
4. Refused to give subscription sales the same weight in the ranking scale as a standard sale. Instead forcing us to give away 4 sub sales to equal one sale for the purpose of rank increase even though their is no difference in the license terms for either sale.

So you say, yes they give you the full commission, but there are some details left out like percentages, levels, commission cuts and back door tactics.

So far December has been my best month on 123rf.
That being said, It's still only at $36 for the month. I'm still uploading and trusting in what I've read here. So far I'm not seeing it but I believe it's there.

I'm going to keep saving, buy the 1DX. Continue to shoot, edit, upload and keyword for Fotolia, Shutterstock, Dreamstime and at times 123rf.
Hopefully I will continue to get credentials for big concerts in the Seattle area. I've got a plan for some magazines that will hopefully bring some $$. I'd like to see my editorial work pick up volume with cash flow.
In addition, I've got pages and pages of ideas for shoots I want to do. I hope to actually dive into the list and create most of the images.
Should be a great year!

Basically, they showed up to cause trouble and harass security, so they could shoot a video about it. Then, when asked by security why they were there, they lied about the reason. Who is acting improperly?
My thoughts exactly. All stunts like this are going to accomplish is to piss people off even more.

I just received a 6 cent refund which is hilarious because I didn't know I've even had a sale there. I think I have a grand total of 3 images in my IS portfolio

This can't be good news for anyone including 123rf, Grandfathered photogs and certainly not newbies or recent exclusive shooters.
Their biggest problem in my opinion is their price. I would rather see them double their prices and lower commissions 15 percent than go this route.

I must be missing something here. October was my best month by far at 123 with $26 in revenue coming my way. Last month it was $19.

Took me close to 3 years but I saw that I now have 1001 images on line. I consider that a milestone especially with the tighter acceptance rate over the past year.
Nice job Bob! Congrats on the milestone. Mat

I'm with Paulie on this one. That being said, I love the 1DX is going to be the ultimate nature shooting camera. The 1DMarkIII for current cameras is what I use. 10 frames a second is pretty handy when shooting a quick animal. They do sell, just not as often as ultimately they are timeless photographs that don't need updating very often from a buyers perspective. A lion shot from 10 years ago is not going to be a lot different from one shot today. I've got most of my nature shots on my Infinite collection here... http://us.fotolia.com/p/200920505

That does help Josh thanks.
Unfortunately, it confirms the accuracy of the information. There is no way I can justify selling my photos that low. Every other site places my high-res files in the XL category. I can see the appeal to your plan from a buyers perspective but as a photographer that would be very self-deprecating in my opinion. I was really hesitant about the prices when my assumption was I would be selling extra large files.
Thanks for the opportunity but I am going to respectfully bow out.
All the best,
Mat

Can someone point me in the direction of the file size requirements? I just had my first image approved there but it appears a full resolution download from my 1D Mark III is only going to be worthy of a "Large" sale at $5.
Is this accurate?

This last year has presented a real challenge for me to get back up to the numbers I was getting exclusively at FT. Fortunately they rallied for me in November. In particular my Infinite collection so it was a decent month.
SS definitely impresses me as the growth is continuing day to day. It's so easy to build my portfolio there as there system is so user friendly and intuitive. Not to mention their approval rate for me has been really great.
DT is a mystery to me. It's a pain in the neck to upload there with the limitations. When I get motivated to keyword and all that the momentum is suddenly stopped for a week and I have to wait. So many rejections for similar submissions makes me very hesitant to upload for fear of my percentage and ultimately my submission cap being lowered. Sales are moderate. Still trying to figure out the ranking system. I have a couple of images at level 5 that pay well but most are still at level 0 or 1 so the commission is extremely low. All in all I find myself scratching my head at that site. I see the potential but I'm pessimistic about it coming to fruition for me for a while. I am hoping though.
123RF I don't see what the excitement is about. Very low sales, very low commission on very low prices. I'm going to stick with it to see if something shifts for me but right now it's pretty discouraging.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Hey Drew,
I've uploaded some pics and added model releases to the folder in my ftp uploader. The model releases don't appear anywhere that I can see in the final submission process. Am I missing something or are they automatically attached to all pics in the batch?
Thanks,
Mat

Well, I tried. I uploaded my 10 pics and got a 405 error message. I did get an email confirmation that says it did go through so we'll see.

Honestly, who knows what things will look like in two years on any site? My guess is that Photodune will be a major player in two years. Either way, does anyone want to base their business decisions on distant hypotheticals?
Well screw it! You are right. My wife gets mad at me based on hypothetical scenario's and it drives me nuts (short drive).
The feedback is overwhelmingly positive and the glowing review at the Microstock Diary blog have convinced me to give it a shot (pun intended). Definitely going to opt out of EL's but I'm excited to see the potential.

Any chance of price increases when rank increases?
I would like a tiered scheme as well, but rather for % than price, since I think a single price from buyers' point of view is simpler
I am thinking more globally for the industry and quite frankly all of our future. I have nothing against Photodune. I understand their strategy to undercut the industry leaders in order to compete. I'm just worried this trend will become like a Walmart and take over the industry. Since Yuri has already sold 5,000 images here people have clearly learned they can buy his shots at a fraction of the price they can elsewhere. It's not like they are buying a generic version of a Yuri photo. They are buying the exact same product. If we all dump our portfolios there, that's going to be the price structure as all the other sites will need to lower theirs to compete. Is it possible we could all look back at this thread in 2 years and slap ourselves in the forehead shouting "This is why we now get 33% of a 10 cent commission on an extra large file!? Mat
