I still think it's mainly a reaction to Thinkstock, after all we are only five days away from the deadline set by Getty, to either accept the new ASA, or close our accounts. I don't think the timing is a coincidence.

Must be they feel threatened by Getty's plan for forcing contributors to Thinkstock, and this is their 'preemptive strike'. I don't think they have the earning power to threaten contributors like this, I wouldn't hesitate to pull my account if they shoved me back to white.

Average sales for me on Bigstock.

But the independent boycott of Thinkstock was working, that's why they raised commissions early on! It's also why they resorted to forcing participation in TS. I think we underestimate our collective power, and we give up and give in way-y-y too easily.

IS came up with Thinkstock for the purpose of destroying the competition - and if you think they're exploiting us now, imagine how bad things can get if they have very little in the way of competition to hold them in check. Raising commissions wasn't enough to lure people into TS, so they have now resorted to FORCING people to allow them to mirror their images on TS. They are counting on our passivity to work in their favor. Do you really want to prove them right? The exclusive content gets mirrored upstream, while independent content gets kicked down over to the bargain basement - thus devaluing your work, while raising the value of their own exclusive content by comparison. They've been screwing photographers for years, and they're very good at what they do. Underestimate them at your peril...

I don't get it, independents are reporting declining, dismal sales at IS - so why are so many willing to accept their unreasonable ASA and give up control of their images in the process??! You're giving up so much to invest in a sinking ship!

I've looked into Canada's immigration policy. They won't take just anyone, and a medical exam is part of the application process. This would probably disqualify me & my husband Howard because he's seriously ill. I imagine they want to weed out Americans who are looking to emigrate in the hope of getting free health care. I lost my insurance when Howard's COBRA ran out, he'll qualify for Medicare in Sept 2012 since he's he's on permanent disability - in the meantime I'm paying $1000 a month just for Howard. His medical bills are so high that the alternative would be financial Armageddon. I'm hoping I can afford coverage for myself when Obama's health care reform law goes into effect. Hopefully the republicans won't kill it first.

I'm leaving - the only decision I have left to make now is whether I close my account completely, or disable most of my portfolio. I may leave a couple of old images active to keep my account open, just in case iStock management changes for the better someday (dream on). I expect that if I stay things will keep getting worse - earnings will continue to decrease over time, and the terms of the ASA will become even more unreasonable. I'm jumping off the sinking ship now, and plan on working very hard to create my best new images for iStock's competitors. I see it as sacrificing short term gain for long term stability, both for myself and for the industry as a whole. The alternative is to give in to hopelessness and let iStock kick me around to the bitter end. Call me deluded, but I'm casting my vote in favor of hope.

Can I change my answer on the survey? I had originally selected 'not sure' and I'd like to change it to 'taking my portfolio off iStock'; is that possible?

I hadn't thought of that - but if I don't close my account, won't I have to manually deactivate every single image? I have around 1,000 images on iStock. They can't be placed on PP sites if they're deactivated, can they?

^^^ Have a look here
Q How do I say no to the new ASA? A Contact [email protected] to close your account.

Thanks for the link. I read the rest of the page and I'm still a little confused about the process of closing my account. I had assumed that I could simple give my notice before Sept 28, and continue earning royalties up until that point. Then I read this: qIf Im non-exclusive and I deactivate certain files from my portfolio, will that be enough to keep them from being added to the Partner Program? a Yes. As of September 29th the new ASA takes effect. So you will have 30 days from today to remove whatever content you would like. If you decide to deactivate your content after September 29th, it will take up to 30 days to remove your content from the Partner sites, in accordance with the new ASA. Now I'm wondering if I have the luxury of waiting until the end of Sept to give notice and still manage to keep my images off of Thinkstock...

I hate being forced into this position, but I will most likely leave iStock over this. I felt like a sellout when I stayed in spite of the commission cut and now they want to force me into having my work on The Abomination Known as Thinkstock? I have to give up control of my work just to have my images on their site! I will be giving up few hundred a month over this, so it's been a very difficult decision to make. If their intent is to drive Shutterstock out of business, they'll have to do it without my help.

Is it possible to reactivate images after you have deactivated them? Or is deactivation permanent? It would be easier to deactivate my portfolio if I knew that I could retain the option of reactivating it if things ever improve at IS in the future.

Things are only going to get worse for independents at IS. Now they want to force us into supplying a bargain basement ghetto that will ultimately devalue our work. And if they succeed in crushing SS, we are all screwed, and that includes exclusives. If we allow this to happen, we have only ourselves to blame. I know what the right thing to do is, I just don't know if I've got the courage to leave.

Now I'm faced with a very difficult decision - should I leave iStock altogether? I'm seriously considering leaving, but it will cost me a significant drop in income. I wish I knew what to do. I'm wondering how many of us independents will leave altogether - if most of us leave, will this harm iStock? Would they even care?

I have decided to stop uploading to FT. It has reached the point where they represent a much smaller percentage of my overall microstock income anyway. Stopping uploads to them isn't going to impact my earnings much at all.

I'm sorry, but I can't say to anyone:" Please, buy at an agency where I get maybe 16% of the price!" There are agencies with much better conditions. Better for me and better for the buyer.
This sums up my feelings exactly.
My feelings, too.

Okay I just noticed the Facebook page isn't mine, apparently it's a copy of mine. Someone actually created a false Facebook page and Amplicate profile to badmouth Fotolia in my name Why would anyone do that?
Now that's really strange - sounds like someone has started a smear campaign against Fotolia.

My earnings for June '11 are about half of what they were in June '10. I'm at the gold level.

Personally I'd like to see IS and FT buyers go elsewhere since they are the leaders in low and dropping commissions.

I've lost all motivation for both IS and FT. Thanks to commission cuts and best match changes, my earnings have dropped off a cliff on both sites. SS and DT are going strong these days, and they have switched places with IS and FT as far as my earnings are concerned. If I didn't have a truckload of medical bills to pay, I'd seriously consider halting uploads to both FT and IS. As it is I need every dime I can get. I haven't uploaded anything anywhere for the past month; I've been busy with orders for custom artwork. It pays better than the micros these days.

Interesting that they are at the bottom of the top tier and still sinking. I wouldn't be surprised to watch them drop to middle tier in the near future...

I'm getting so disgusted with IS, the rip-offs never end.
