I know many artists, and many of them are indeed flakes.

I've been through this exact process, though I do it a bit differently. $.2/image is going to be hard to find, especially if you expect them to upload. You can post the job on Elance and see what responded you get - this is how I connected with the individuals I use.

Selling Stock Direct / Re: Google Analytics

It's free, there's no catch. I also use Statcounter.com, which I think is better for smaller numbers of users. Until recently, Statcounter was much better with real time results, but Analytics is getting a major upgrade that does this well.

I think there's a RM calculator as part of Ktools Photostore v3, but it will be MUCH more robust in v4, which should be nearing a beta phase of development. It's a complete rewrite of the product.

Software - General / Re: Copy - Paste IPTC software?

GraphicConverter will do this - I keyword small jpgs that can be easily emailed, them batch copy IPTC date to the TIFF file.

I think much of the angst comes from their low, low, low EL pricing.

Video Equipment / Sofware / Technique / Re: Portable crane/jib
« on: November 02, 2011, 11:43 »
Even with pre-focusing and thinking ahead it still limits the use of this thing significantly.

I agree, but I was taking objection the the outright dismissal as "useless". Quite useful for most videographers.

As with many other cheaper crane/jib arrangements, you need to preset focus and think ahead a bit. It's done a LOT, and is a nice way to get a bit of movement into the frame. As long as you're not overly ambitious, it looks like it can be effective.

New Sites - General / Re: masterlance.com looking for partner

Seems like the kind of thing you could advertise on a freelancing site! :D

From photodune's point of view, they can drive traffic and customers from a user base in their other communities, so they can do basically whatever they want and still count on a decent number of users (not be available to other startup sites). So they won't have the same advertising costs associated with other new sites.

One would hope that this led them to offer higher commissions to contributors since they will have lower startup ad costs. They other way to see it is that they are leveraging communities they build, so they've paid to acquire that traffic elsewhere in the chain, so they are entitled to be more profitable with a new venture, leveraging a user base.

I tend to think that they will be assured of some level of success, but be limited on the growth ceiling.

Just my $.02.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Computer cursors and copyright?
« on: October 27, 2011, 10:43 »
Interesting question. To short the things, you may want to shorten/enlarge the graphic by 1 pixel in any direction. The result will be automatically something else.
Comparing pixel-by-pixel an image and finding similar, means, by default, derivative work. Regardless who owns the copyright of the original image (except author died 70 years ago (in several countries 80 or 90)).

Legal advice of the year!

what is photoexpress? I find mountains of my images there, but when I try to download one I get referred to a sign-up page, when I try to find the pricing it isn't there. Is this a live site or something in limbo?

Photoxpress was Fotolia's free image site, but now it's a super low cost site. It seems to bounce around...

Folks,

After carefully considering your feedback, we've decided to focus on retail pricing rather than commissions. Most of the photographers that we have spoken to agree that destructive retail pricing is not good for the industry. We have worked with industry leaders such as Yuri Arcurs and Mark Butler (Monkey Business) to convince agencies like deposit photos to sell at sustainable prices reflected by the current online market leaders. We applaud their recent success and hope the trend will continue. We encourage all photographers with portfolios on this and similar sites to do the same.

Based on your feedback, we've modified our rule to allow Fotolia to decrease retail pricing to the lowest tier, if a photographer's images are being sold on other sites for significantly less, **without** modifying the royalty levels.

Please note that this rule only applies to Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire, and Diamond ranked images that are non-exclusive, and selling at prices above the standard XS price. No changes will occur without prior communications with the artist.

Ahh there, he did name names after all.

No doubt negotiations can now start with those other awful agencies like Photoexpress so that they stop selling Yuri's XXL images for $1 instead of 30 credits like on Fotolia.

(eg. http://www.photoxpress.com/stock-photos/bulb/man/light/13461974 vs. $30 http://www.fotolia.com/id/9588771)

You know Fotolia and Photoxpress are the same company, right?

So maybe Fotolia will send you back to white if they sell your images for nothing on Photoxpress.

General Stock Discussion / Re: What is the point of credits?
« on: October 10, 2011, 10:58 »
Credits can go unused and the EXPIRE. Cash never expires. Credits work out well for the agencies.

Essentially it's a way to decouple the "currency" of a site from the currency of the shopper. Tinkering a few percent with credits is easier, and you can skim here and there without anyone noticing. Any site in any industry will benefit from using a "currency" of it's own creation/choosing to subtly manipulate.

Selling Stock Direct / Re: Advertising your site. Ideas?
« on: August 26, 2011, 09:48 »
Sort of depends on how much traffic. You could just put up referral banners that look like ads. Buysellads.com is a neat system. AdSense can work ok, again depending on traffic. You may want to sell ads directly as well. Text links can be sold to people looking for an SEO boost, but not much click traffic.

You asked a question. I was the only one who gave you a relevant answer. No one else here is paid by check.

You've got your boring answer to your boring question. No one can help you.

197

To the guy who gets paid every month by check: good for you bud, for having the time and motivation needed to build a portfolio that will get you a payment every month! However, I nether have that kind of time nor motivation, so I usually receive 1-2 checks per year, and the one from February is still not here (for real).

I believe his point was not that he gets paid every month, so much as that he hadn't experienced the problem you did back in January/February.  So not everyone who gets paid by check experienced the same thing.

That may not be a comfort to you, but from your OP I got the impression this was a well-known, sitewide problem.  If PPDD got all his checks, then maybe your case is isolated and there's something else going on with your account?

For example, do they have your up-to-date tax ID information?

Thanks Lisa for translating for this person! Indeed my point was to to show that checks have been consistently issued by the site in question over the time period in question. I hereby retract my seemingly-insulting help.

Thanks everyone, interesting info.

It's not that I'm trying to target ELs, but since usage terms vary so widely and licenses are so misunderstood, I often wonder if there is a certain type of publisher/user that seems to adhere correctly to the EL, even if they can download the images under a standard RF license. I think a lot of images are making their way to EL uses without the proper license, perhaps due to ignorance.

199
I've been wondering - what types of images (subject matter) are more likely to be purchased under an extended license? For many of the intended uses, I would think that scenic/landscapes would be popular, but there are many exceptions.

I haven't sold enough ELs to really have a feel for this, but for those of you that have: Is there a difference in the type of image, or are ELs of all subject matter purchased with about the same statistical frequency throughout your portfolio?

Thanks!
