Newbie Discussion / Re: Please critique
« on: July 07, 2009, 12:02 »
It's always hard to tell from a small image. If you need feedback on technical aspects of the photo you will need to post a crop so the detail can be seen.

I don't shoot animals or pets so maybe I'm not the best to judge, but over all I would say that it's not a bad effort, too much black for me and I would like to see the face, I'm sure there is a great expression in there waiting to make someone go 'aah'. Keep shooting.

Is it a dog?

Yes, you wouldn't want to actually fix the problem when someone out there will take it.

No! I don't think banding is problem at all! That is what differs my oppinion from reviewers and yours on this topic. Since there is no problem what I have to fix? Banding? It is unavoidable on this image and that is all...

Are you saying there is no banding in the image OR you can't see the banding in the image OR you think an image with banding is completely acceptable?

From what I understand a macro RF licence is different to a micro licence and to get the equivalent you would have to buy a micro EL which would bring the price points more equal, or in some cases the macro RF could even be cheaper.

As a side comment, does anyone have a good breakdown of the usage statistics for microstock sales split between print and screen use?

I haven't seen any stats as such, but I'm reading more and more frequently that images for web use are increasing and images for print are in decline.

Someone doing something already. Price of a credit on UK goes from 60p to 75p per 1st July.
Oh, maybe that message was only intended for buyers and not subscribers but since I'm both............

Congrats to you guys in the UK. Looks like you are the only ones getting a "raise" this year :)

I thinks it's more like catch-up for us, I think the 0.60 was calculated when the was $2 to 1.

None for me on Monday, one JIU so far today. I was having a good run of PPDs last week but all that has stopped.

We have already had one major commission cut from Fotolia - perhaps to afford to hire these guys.  That one was reluctantly accepted by contributors.

I doubt another commission cut would be easy for them to justify nor go over smoothly with suppliers.

Today UK submitters had some good news:

Dear Members,

In order to maintain a balance between country zones, Fotolia will slightly increase the credit price for the UK market.
On July 1st 2009, the price per credit will increase to 0.75.

Please take advantage of the next few days while the UK credit price is still at 0.60.

We apologize for this inconvenience. Fotolia still offers by far the most affordable image and video selection on the market.

Well I hope it's good news for UK submitters.

I wonder if I had moaned in a forum IS may have changed their view and accepted the image, maybe I should have tried.
We only review rejections via the Scout queue or the Critique Request Forum. However, it couldn't hurt to bring your rejections up in the ACTUAL iS Forums(Critique Request Forum) so you can get some feedback. You never know unless you try.

For the record, the iS inspectors don't frequent this forum so the chance of them seeing any barbs thrown here isn't likely. It's a pretty simple process though to get your file reassessed:

file = rejected >>> Critique Request Forum/Scout >>> resolution.

Either your file will be overturned or you will be further informed on why it was rejected.

Thanks for the info, but this was an attempt at sarcasm. You get one blue pie heart.

It's never your fault is it!

Banding can be quite common in bitmap illustrations, especially when gradients are involved. IS picks it up more than most, and when they do, it is there if you look. I've tried quite a few things to put it right in the past when I have got the rejection, but with no success. I normally let it go.

I wonder if I had moaned in a forum IS may have changed their view and accepted the image, maybe I should have tried.

As has been stated above, as the image attains higher levels, you will receive a higher royalty according to the following chart:

http://www.dreamstime.com/level.php

But there are many people that feel that as an image attains a higher level, it is more susceptible to be downloaded as a subscription (and thus you will receive a lower royalty).

Likewise, subscription sales count towards image level increase (I don't think any other agency gives this), so when it is sold as PPD your royalty is quite nice. I have a simple image of a tomato isolated on white which has reached level 5, the last time this image sold was medium PPD which earned me $4.33. The average royalty paid to me for this image for the last 10 downloads is $2.31 and the rate of PPD & subscription sales was about 50/50.

I don't have a big portfolio at IS but it does did generate regular sales. Recently things have changed, I will get a really good day and then absolutely nothing for 2/3 days and then another good day and so on. Although earnings are about the same, but still only 50% of what they were 18 months ago.

StockXpert.com / Re: Is StockXpert going down?
« on: June 17, 2009, 14:31 »

Nothing against Istock, but I hope StockXpert's customers go to SS, DT, etc. instead.  Getty's treatment of contributors in this situation has been pitiful.

I think this may be the case, the Photos.com collection is going to look pretty feeble without the StockXpert content, at least in the short term, or perhaps always, with IS upload restrictions and rejections for 'not stock' they may never catch up.

If I were a buyer and knew what was going on, I would be spending my subscription budget with a different agency (take your pick) or plundering the dollar bin at IS, as this seems to be the only content that will be replacing the removed StockXpert content.

As much as I liked StockXpert, under Getty control it's dead. I think independents and all other agencies have been done a favour here, providing independents don't panic and grab the insulting 25c offered via IS. Think about it.

The grey looks fine. If somebody wants to cut it out, it's not going to be difficult for them. Nice image BTW.

This thread makes no sense to me. Have a lot of posts been deleted?

What sort of help are you after Dennis?

Please read the first post on the thread

I saw the same thing on Veer, but I didn't react because I was a bit confused... I didn't know who to believe... SS or Veer

"We have consulted with our tax advisors, legal counsel and the IRS to ensure that we are properly collecting and maintaining the appropriate information with respect to the foreign photographers withholding tax obligatons.

Rest assured - we don't take this process lightly, and we've definitely done our homework."

I have had a lot of success with the cheap radio triggers from Ebay. They work fine for me (still life in the studio) but I'm not sure I would trust them 100% on a time/subject sensitive shoot. The only problems I get is if they are too close together (less than a meter), they just fire randomly.

20,000 quality illustrations by the end of this year?

198
Thanks Jonathan. I have enjoyed reading your recent informative posts here. Thanks for posting this one, it's fantastic to gain an insight from a successful professional who deals with a variety of stock photography markets. There will be no doubt a lot of changes in the industry over the coming years and I hope Sachs & Goldman have got their numbers right. The future looks bright for talented, organized and hard working photographers.

So you try to find out why StockXpert hides your photos from their customers and you will told me they don't do so with any kind of illustration?
My first upload at StockXpert was a photo, takes some hours to review and had 19 views since 26 May.....that doesn't seemed to me like hiding fotos away from customers.

@ clivia
I had a look at your images at StockXpert, there's a photo from 24may with 5 downloads, what are we talking about?

I for one am glad that you are having good sales at StockXpert, it gives hope, however many contributors are feeling the pinch, including myself. StockXpert seems to be on autopilot at the moment. It would be interesting to hear how you have been doing there in a few months. Keep on uploading and may the $$$ roll in.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Getty Images
« on: June 11, 2009, 11:40 »
well clearly dunsmore knows more then me... but that still doesn't answer my questions.

Are the only/main two ways to get accepted on Getty:
1.  Be exclusive and at least Silver in IS
2.  Register on Getty and give them the link to your Flickr website (in this case, make sure to only have your best photos on flickr?)

I believe they have a pay per image scheme, you pay Getty $50 for every accepted image or something along those lines.
