iStockPhoto.com / Re: Site down again
February 15, 2009, 04:56
Down for me, too, since early this evening.  I guess they're always working to improve...
#203
I think they fixed it (for me, at least).  No subs today.  Back to ppd sales.
#204
From the SX forum today:

"   Hi guys,

We've been doing some content migration between servers, and it appears a couple things happened out of sequence. This is what resulted in your images being offered in subs.

This has now been fixed. Images that are not offered through subscription are not available in Photos.com or JIU. The thumbs may still appear in the searches for a couple more days, but they won't be able to download the images.

Again, sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for bringing this to our attention.

If you are still receiving sub downloads through Photos.com and JIU but have not been opted in for a while, please let us know.

Thanks,
Steve "

From what I understood, checking the EL option isn't supposed to automatically opt one in for subscription sales.  If I find out it does, then I will uncheck it also.
#206
Looks like my images are coming up in JIunlimited searches, but as far as I could tell not on Photos.com.  Really weird!! In my profile I have never checkmarked the subscription nor the partner licensing options, not once.  However, I have always had the extended license option checked.  Could the EL option have anything to do with it?
#207
Has this happened to anyone on Stockxpert??  I looked at my account this morning and found I had 4 subscription sales.  However, the strange thing is that I have never, not even accidentally, had my subscription option enabled in my profile, and I looked immediately and sure enough it is NOT enabled.  Did I miss an announcement that sub sales are not optional anymore on SX, or what???   I contacted support, but wondering if you'd had a similar problem and how it was resolved, if ever.

Yeah, I find the whole notion of accurately and thoroughly titling, describing, and keywording my images for as wide an audience as possible quite boring, tedious, and unnecessary, too.

Lately I've taken to using "Picture of Thing" as a title and "Thing I took a picture of to make some money with." as a description for all my images. I use an absolute barebones minimum for keywords, too. I hate sites that insist on using more than two of them (I'd only use "picture" and "thing" if I could get away with it). My sales have really skyrocketed since I started doing this ... give it a try!

Does this really work?

Absolutely!!! Try it!

I can't say it's unfair; if Fotolia didn't get paid, why should they take the hit alone?  But incompetent?  That I'll agree with.  To take a year and a half to figure out they have an accounting problem, and then to ding us without so much of a word of warning are signs both of incompetence and lousy supplier relations.

"Incompetence and lousy supplier relations" are business as usual for some companies.

No images that require a Model release!

David  ;D

Do you mean that Getty won't be accepting Flickr shots that require a model release???  If so, that's really going to cut down their (Getty's) potential pool of available photos.  What about images that require Property release??

iStockPhoto.com / Re: unable to log on
January 22, 2009, 16:42
Very weird.  I was able to log on just fine very early this morning.  About 5 hours later now, using IE 6 I can't log on at all (it keeps kicking me back to the main page).  Using Firefox 3.0.5, I can log on successfuly only about every 3rd try.  Using Opera 9.61 I seem to be able to sign on without any problem every time.

You guys don't believe in true love, do you?   :'(

Regards,
Adelaide

True love does not exist in microstock, only low royalties.  The sooner this person learns that fact the better, to save another heart from breaking. :-*

I am so thankful that this forum (MSG) exists for exposing such frauds, because this line from the email:

"(Remember the distance or colour does not matter but love matters a lot in life)"

nearly got to me.  I mean, for a while I was believing that someone with such depth of feeling could not possibly be a scammer/spammer.   Thanks for clearing that up. :D

Off Topic / Rechargeable batteries.......
January 14, 2009, 21:32
What are your favorite rechargeable batteries (especially AA-size) for your photo equipment, cameras, lights, etc?  I finally got an education in rechargeables, and realized that there's so much more to them than just buying any old set of chinese aa's and popping them in the cheap Walmart chargers I bought early last year.  What a waste of money those were!
Anyway, just wondering what everyone's experiences are with rechargeables, the most reliable ones you've found, etc.  I'm soon buying a bunch of eneloops and already bought 2 Maha chargers, which do a much better job than the junky cheap ones.
#215
But remember, he says he can possibly give you a better deal for higher quality images:
"Perhaps more for better groupings"

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
#216
If they examine pictures at 100% the way the micro's do, then Getty must be seriously re-thinking their deal with Flickr right about now.....

iStockPhoto.com / Re: IS site down
November 02, 2008, 20:30
Still down for me today, Sunday 2:30 pm US central time. Haven't been able to sign on since late last night.  I can get to the Istockphoto homepage with no problem, but I can't log-in.
#219
How about this one, a resubmission after trimming down several keywords.....

and IS's rejection reasons:
We regret to inform you that we cannot accept your submission, entitled Washing Hands, for addition to the iStockphoto library for the following reasons:

"The following keywords used for this file do not appear to be fully relevant to the
subject.

{[ Washing Hands,  Soap Sud,  Body Care (Beauty),  Cleaning,  Body Care (Beauty),
Hygiene,  Cleaning (Moving Activity),  Cleaning (Moving Activity),  Clean (Good
Condition),  Soap Sud,  Soap Sud,  Washing (Cleaning),  Washing (Cleaning),  Clean (Good
Condition)]}

The keywords used for this file do not appear to be fully relevant to the subject."

Now I ask you, if I can't use those keywords, what remains besides "hands" and "water" ???
Is this stupid or what??

Perhaps the new Panasonic DMC-LX3.  Has anyone here been able to test it yet for serious shooting? The lens is only a wide to normal zoom (although with the Leica name on it), but the camera is supposed to be an excellent performer. I don't think it's available in USA yet.
#221
Sorry, John, it wasn't meant as a slam.  I just haven't been hearing much about the site lately.  The concept of Cutcaster is really good.  I'm hoping it gets going fairly well soon.  The dilemma of a new stock site these days is that so many experienced shooters who understand stock are wary of dumping much or any of their work into a new unproven agency. But then how does a site get "proven" without a large number of good photos in order to increase sales. etc, etc, etc.
???
#222
Anyone care to comment about how they're doing on Cutcaster?  It's a new site but doesn't seem to be going anywhere; perhaps it's still too early----visions of Un-Lucky Oliver come to mind.....
#223
Leaf,

Many many thanks for working this out for us, whatever the discount ends up being.  For sure this is the best microstock forum in the world!!
#224
Verrrry interesting!  This quote amazed me (though it's not a big surprise):

Quote from: hatman12 on March 29, 2008, 06:49

If counted separately from Getty Images, iStockphoto would probably be the world's third-largest stock agency this year.

Perhaps Getty will transform itself into one huge micro agency----igettystockphoto, or something like that.  (maybe Getty-in-or-Getty-out-Stock....)

.....perhaps it would be better to only allow the buyers to vote or just base it on sales.

What an incredible concept!  Perhaps they will give this idea serious consideration.
