Dear Xposure, I hate to participate in this embarrasing thread, but I just wanted you to know that I dig blogs like yours and that I've added it to my feeds. MSG is usually a pleasant place, but I have noticed that many photographers who have enjoyed any measure of success often get bullied on these boards. Please do enjoy the fact that you have been attacked .

Uh-oh, there's a glitch. Many upsized photos have a download button instead of a 'buy credits' button and it looks like they can be downloaded without paying. I checked a couple other ports and it's not just mine. It doesn't occur on all the files, mostly the older ones.

50% of Jan 08. 15% fewer single sales in January to December, but a nice number of OD's which make it a bigger $ month than December.
Today has to be my worst Wednesday on record.

I've used them a few times to print t-shirts for me. Shipping was quick. The quality on some was better than others. They had quite a few limitations with what kind of artwork they could print, but I think they have a digital press option now, and their product line has grown quite a bit since last year at this time.
I think you can also have an unlimited number of products in your store, you can't have a free-unlimited at Cafe Press, but I believe you can at Zazzle.
A very good thing to note about Spreadshirt is that they actually reply to queries, it was almost immediate.

It is downright unnaceptable that there's chargebacks to 1997 though, with no backup provided.
I get annoyed by chargebacks as much as everyone else, but it isn't exactly like a lawnmower being charged back by Sears. The agency doesn't actually purchase our art for sale do they, they distribute it for us. It's almost like consignment sales for traditional artists. There should be some kind of time limit though, good grief.

For a free site it looks pretty darn good. I find the greens very refreshing.
I think you need to tighten up your language a bit. I felt like a couple of the phrases you used could have been more effective. You might see what I mean, use what you can. (p.s. if I didn't like your stuff I wouldn't bother... Please don't take offence...)

I'm in central Canada, which isn't much of a destination, but let me know your itinerary in Canada when you have it, if it's over the summer especially I travel around quite a bit and we may be on the same path. Many people fly to Winnipeg (where I am) for a connection to Churchill, where the polar bears are. I lived in Toronto for a long time and know it quite well if you have questions about that part of Canada.

Although of course I didn't take it, here's the Worst Toilet in Scotland (from one of my favorite movies of all time):

One of my all-time faves too. I took it to a friend's recently and they were both utterly revolted and wouldn't watch it past the first 15 minutes. Me-artist. Them-normal.

Thanks for the replies guys. Sorry to confuse you RT, but no, I'm not the fat little boy in my Avatar. That nails it, I'll go with a better colour than grey. Christian, you said the exact word I was thinking "dungeon". I'm so glad you confirmed that before I faux-textured a whole room grey. RT's right, go with a colour I can live with. I hadn't considered track lighting, now that I think of it, it may be the best way to go. Cheers.

I will still have my "shooting space" but my husband is sick and tired of looking at my crap every day, so I am constructing a real office in a room in my home. Building a whole wall of closets for my treasured crap. Once I move in there will be a small bit of space where I can shoot table top or headshots (not that I'm much inclined to shoot objects....) and keep lights setup for extended lengths of time.
Instead of just "making due", for once I actually get to think things out...
One might think - a photographer should paint the walls pure white. I loath white walls, and I fear that they would impact my monitor. I remember someone asking this way back on photocamel (but about a whole studio) and it was suggested that they go grey or 18% grey if they can. Does anyone know if this is true? Sounds like there might be a bit of the bs factor in there. Obviously, red walls would be a problem, but how about a dull blue? I will be doing more computer work than shooting in there, but I'd still like to eliminate as much stray colour on both my monitor and any subjects.
Also, I need to think about my overhead lighting. My friend the contractor wants to put in potlights. Should I keep them out of my desk area - monitors are best viewed with lights coming from behind aren't they?
I am likely making this a much bigger deal than it really is. But you know how things go... once it's done it will be decades down the road before I can reno again.
Thanks for your input! I would even like to know things that you did that you should have done differently.

Hey all just this second joined the site and looks interesting to get some questions answered. I have been on the top 4 stock sites for around a year now and wondering if its worth joining any others. Are any of you seeing large sales on the other sites or do you reccommend I just stick to istock, shutterstock, dreamstime and fotolia?
thanks in advice for your answers
Ant
Quit all the other sites ...NOW. Then join istockphoto as an exclusive and earn lots of dosh with $6.20 and $4.40 for your xl and large sales. This was a public service announcement for istockphoto and i get $20 everytime i post
You do need 250 sales to become exclusive at Istock. Before before you see if the crown fits, realize that if you can sell 250 at Istock you can sell 1500 at SS and 200 on DT and maybe 400 on FT and you won't be at the mercy of the IS Search Engine Gods.

For me it's definitely FT, SS, IS and DT in that order with StockXpert lagging and BS and 123rf well behind. Crestock I don't even bother uploading to any more, just go in every 2 or 3 months to claim a payment.
Same here, but sorted differently.
Not necessarily in that order, but always my top 4. Well - with the exception of FT. It had a long period after V2 where it often fell to 5 or 6, but I seem to have joined the search engine again in about September. If I had a crystal ball to look into I would guess that I will no longer see SS on top next year at this time (based on my last year's results vs 2007 vs low sales of new uploads.)

Boy, I'm having a hard time finding a loan. I hope that Kiva doesn't lose lenders in the long run because they are doing such a great job.

Emma, if you don't get response here, try making a poll on surveymonkey.com where people can reply anonymously (maybe there's a better one, that just comes to mind).
Also it was either the NY Times or the Post that did a story on a subject about amateurs turning pro, it used the phrase "Moms with Cameras" - maybe do a search of back issues. Likely at least 18 months.

SS has certain reasons for refusal - one of them being noise because they sell a considerably upsided version and someone told me that noise causes big problems. They do seem to hate shadows, perhaps even noiseless dark areas do not upsize well?
I have one book cover, it's a dark and moody photo, rejected by SS IS StockXpert. It was picked for a cover because it represented so well the dark content of the book. No, this photo is not a best seller, but it does sell and last year I had at least 4 requests to use it in a way that might be against the terms of the agency (most of the requests have been from publishers and education facilities). Buyers don't need just shiny and happy. Dark and moody will likely never be a best seller for any agency, but there is definitley a place for many photos that are rejected, basically for shadows.

You can get an excellent Alienbees or Flashpoint kit for just a few hundred dollars more than this kit, and you can buy with confidence. I make that much money in 7-14 days in microstock depending on the month, and that is just a drop in the bucket for high end contributors. My advice is not to go cheap. Stick with quality gear.
VERY TRUE ADVICE DAN. Trust me on this, if you buy cheap lights and actually use them (and I'm betting that if you are buying lights, you won't soon get bored and stop taking photos) you will outgrow them within 12 months, I guarantee it. Also, I've had some e-bay lights and they were unsafe and would never have been been aproved by CSA to enter this country. You have to be careful. I also bought the cheapest Bees light to use only on backgrounds and it is a thousand times better than any of my budget lights, even better than the ones NOT from eBay.

Ill give you a small example: My last 10 downloads at FT where 60% subscriptions (L or XL) so I lost about 1,4 credits (1,75 for a XL or 1,56 for L) per download or 8,6 credits for 10 downloads (average). Thats to much for customer relationship.
I thought FT subs were limited to L. I've never had an XL sub sale. Or is that a Vector?

Is there a loss of detail on the upper right? Is MY my monitor too bright? I always struggle with the brightness step of calibration.

I don't think you can use the on-camera flash, because they pick up the infrared burst that comes out before the flash - It seems to me I read that on a forum and even tried it but the lights trigger out-of-synch. My lights are in the travel case at the moment, but if I think of it this weekend I'll try. I can't remember, can that on-camera flash be set to non-TTL, fully manual should do the trick if that is an option.
Bees sells their own triggers as well.

I think it would make a clever t-shirt. I wonder if it was made originally for Zazzle or Cafe Press.
