Envato / Re: Photodune Tax Problems.
« on: October 03, 2016, 08:19 »
One dude gets over $200,000 a month there, from his one WordPress theme. But I'm sure he'd feel infinitely better if he was earning half that somewhere else. Before you could set your own prices, his theme was $59. Now he can set his own prices, he's put it up to $60. Probably because he knows he's onto a good thing, and that's pretty much what it should have been priced at.

Maybe he'll experiment more with prices, moving forward (if he can get more per sale and not take a hit on overall revenue, then good for him), but I'm sure like most people.... he'd rather get a bit of something than a lot of nothing. The higher he puts the price the closer he gets to the realms of custom site prices, and the whole idea of stock assets is that it saves a lot of time and money.

But is he a slave, even if it was priced at $30 or $15? I think the general timescale for creating a theme is three months for a one man band. Let's say his took six months as it's obviously of a high standard. So that makes around 1000 hours of work. So even if it was selling for $15, he's now made $2677 for every hour that he's put in. Doesn't sound like slave wages to me! But it's not... it's selling for $60, so he's made over $10k per hour. Is that not good enough? Is that price tag insufficient? Should he be getting $20k or $50k an hour before he can walk down the street with his head held high.

As a side note, I appreciate he will have had to put a lot of time into updates and support, but still... $250k a month would make it pretty worthwhile.

And you do realise that WordPress authors are welcome to price their themes at whatever they like. If they'll sleep better at night having a theme that costs $10,000 then they're more than welcome to price them accordingly. I mean, they won't get any sales and won't be able to pay the bills... but at least they won't have a slave mentality, right?

Just on the whole how long to make a living part... if you define $5000 a month as making a living, and you've uploaded 1m images, then I'd be pretty surprised if you weren't making a living from the end of the first month. I mean you need to have a pretty rubbish portfolio to be getting an average of less than half a cent, per image, per month.

I had a couple of sales in 2011, a couple in 2012, one in 2013 and I've not had anything since. I can't see them being around for much longer... if you look on the latest clips sold page, it looks like they sell about ten clips a week these days. Irina must have been one of the lucky few!

I've been doing Pond5 and VideoHive for quite a few years, but only got on SS, iS, FT, VB and the like in the last year, and I have noticed that sales have been increasing gradually over that time. Not really sure why that is. When I started, Shutterstock would be $50 one month, nothing the next. Now it seems to be $50 one month, $150 the next... got $300 last month! And there's not really been a massive increase in my portfolio over the year, maybe a 25% increase or something.

It's black magic.

"Why do they put tax withholding on money that I don't even earn?"

Yeah, nobody's quite figured that out yet!

They calculate the full sales price (including their commission) as your income and consequently you get 28% withheld of the sales price - not only of your commission. After that, additionally, they take their "share" as commission from the sales price and you are left with the rest.

If you supply a Tax ID from "whereever", the states or international, you have a hight chance that due to the FATCA agreement the US will report later the TOTAL of Envatos income of a sale (including their "commission") as YOUR income to your local Tax office which will get you Audited or bring even more trouble.

I understand that some really make money their buuuuuuuut......seriously, everybody with some self respect left should stop submitting to "companies" like Envato or, better, delete their Port there.

You're kind of right. The fees that they charge are split into two. The buyers fee and the authors fee. The buyers fee is subtracted from the total price (the list price) to give the item price. The authors fee and any taxes are then calculated on the item price.

Thankfully I'm a UK taxpayer so I don't get anything withheld. However, if I did get taxed, then I'm assuming the best course of action would be to report income as the item price, and then report the authors fee as an outgoing. I can't see any tax authorities having much of a problem with that seeing as we never see the authors fee.

Still, it's not exactly straightforward. However, I find it slightly more likely that what they're doing is correct, rather than some complicated and convoluted tax swizz that's completely incorrect and/or borderline fraud.

I could be wrong.

Yeah, I'm kinda with you on that one. Would be interesting to see the results if all stock marketplaces and freelancing sites required proof of Photoshop/After Effects licenses to contribute. I'm sure I'd have quite a bit less competition!

To benefit from the tax treaty they want to know that you're going to be paying tax in your own country, so that at least one of the countries in the tax treaty is going to seeing some tax from any sales. As a result, you should have some kind of tax identification number that you can provide to show that you're a taxpayer in your own country.

If you don't fill out the W8 then it;s assumed you're a US author and you have 28% withheld from all sales. If you fill out a W8 but without a tax ID number... then they take 30% from all US sales and nothing from all non-US sales. If you fill out the W8 with a valid tax ID, and your country has a 0% tax treaty, then you won't have anything subtracted from any of your sales. Well, taxes anyway.

Not sure why most other sites don't ask for the ID number. There is a box to enter your tax ID on the actual physical form, so I'm not sure why a lot of places are leaving that out.

As for the $25 thing... I'm guessing you're a non-exclusive author, as the fees you've had subtracted are pretty high? If you sort the tax thing out, then you'd be getting about $55 rather than $25. And if you go exclusive (and sort the tax thing out) then you'll be getting about $75 rather than $55.

2136
I make an average of $94 per clip, per year, for my non-exclusive stuff. I've not included my exclusive stuff in that, as it contains After Effects projects and audio stuff, so would muddy the waters when it comes to the figures.

Pond5 / Re: Pond5 EL for 149$

You must have got a different email from me if they're promising you $$$$$$.

And it's not whether they are capable of this project or not... unless I'm mistaken, they've been capable of implementing all their other projects. What you're talking about is whether those projects have been successful after being implemented... and that's a different kettle of fish.

Sure, other projects might not have been as successful as hoped, but what are the downsides if this isn't successful? Unless I'm missing something, the worst that can happen is that nobody buys any of these new licenses and we all make exactly what we were making before. The best that can happen is untold riches. In reality? We'll all probably make a tiny bit more a year. That sounds good to me.

If there's one thing I've learned from MicroStockGroup it's that the majority of people believe that their work is worth considerably more than they're being paid for it currently. So Pond5 come up with a new idea that will result in people getting a sizeable chunk more money per sale (if only in a very few instances) and people still aren't happy? Makes me chukle!

Pond5 / Re: Pond5 EL for 149$
« on: September 28, 2016, 20:37 »
No matter how unlikely the sales might be, there's a potential for additional money, with no real down side, so it sounds good to me.

Yes, it may be more money than other places, but if I've learned anything from stock it's that price isn't everything. Otherwise Video hive would have put Shutterstock out of business and Shutterstock would have put Artbeats out of business.

Plus, there may be a few people that only use Pond5 whenever possible, or the clip they want might only be on Pond5. I was contacted about one of my clips aon Pond5  a couple of years ago as a production company wanted me to sign an agreement as the existing one wasn't comprehensive enough for them. They bought the clip through Pond5 and gave me $100 for signing the enhanced agreement. If this new thing was in place back then, them they would have just done that instead. So it's not outside the realms of possibility that this will generate some people some additional revenue. Maybe not much, but a bit.

I've never had to submit a model release form, so I'm no expert, but I would have assumed that SS provide a template that people can use, which contains all the required info?

I have no idea how one would even tell if the map is broken or not. I just see random images from my portfolio popping up in random places on the map at random times. How would I know if the right stuff is popping up at the right time in the right place?

Microstock Services / Re: Offer photo retouching(editing) services
« on: September 23, 2016, 02:19 »
I do not outsource retouching for my microstock photography, but I do use outsourcing for portraiture (belly & baby photography).  I pay 2 $ per image to remove every skin blemish including acne, cellulite, clothing marks, pregnancy stripes, scars, red spots, bruises, shiny spots etc.   No color correcting or other improvements.
- how fast do you work?  (turn-around of 2 days possible?  I send batches of 8 to 16 images)
- what if a person is really a lot of work (lots of skin impurities), or there are 3 people in the photo?  (right now, it's 2 $ no matter how much work).
- you really need a PayPal account, but I pay 5% extra per Paypal payment.
- I send the 40 Mb images in LZW TIF format, in Profoto RGB and I want them back in the same format  (I send them through "We Transfer") - is this possible?
- most retouchers offer 1 free sample photo to show their skills.

Keep in mind the original post was from 18 months ago or thereabouts. I think it was dragged up by the crazy Russian spammer or the helicopter essay dude. The OP could be no longer of this world.

I've done 'the math' and I make an average $17 per video, per month. That doesn't include any After Effects templates. I see what you're saying about the render times and the time that goes into motion graphics... but once you've planned, shot, edited and hired a bunch of people/props for a fancy shoot... that can be more time-consuming/costly than whipping up some planets bumming about in the solar system.

Although I'd like to hope that some fancy custom shoot setup would result in a lot more per month than filming toast popping up from the toaster while you're making your breakfast, your tap running, or some clouds shot from your back garden.

2148
I've not done it, but I can't really see a problem with it. Although, I think if you claimed for everything then you'd likely get in trouble. Like how if you work from home, you can claim a portion of your rent and electricity, I think it would only be fair for you to only claim a portion of your flights and accommodation, as it's still a holiday at the end of the day. As for claiming flights and accommodation for the family, not sure how well that would go down. I mean, yes they may be integral to your shots, but they might say "if you're paying for their flights then why aren't you also paying them at least minimum wage. Where are the invoices for their wages?"

Just thinking out loud now... I could be wrong.
