New Sites - General / Re: New Micro site, tell me what you think!
« on: September 21, 2016, 22:23 »
This doorknocking sounds a bit old fashioned. And it sounds like some kind of pyramid scheme where the whole goal is to be getting this 10% rather than actually building a viable site and selling stock.

And what would be these virtues that we're giving the speil about, you seem to have brushed over that part? Is it just the 10% part, or are there other virtues? There are lots of other sites that have referral programs, maybe not lifetime, but what else do you have to offer... 10% for life is great, but 10% of not much is... well, not much.

2152
And last but not least... double check which category the site in question is going by. I mean sure, it should be motion pictures for video, but what about sites that sell images, vectors, audio etc? Do they use one rate to rule them all? If so... which one?

2153
And just on the percentage thing... I don't have the page to hand, so you're probably looking at the right thing, but just in case... make sure it's the 'royalties' section.

2154
In most places, you can get away with paying tax in your original country, until you've been in the new country for six months. That's why you don't need to pay tax to a dozen different countries if you do a round the world trip for a couple of months. Perfectly legal.

Photo Critique / Re: Still Review (portfolio link)
« on: September 20, 2016, 23:01 »
I'll be honest, I don't like the image. There may be issues with noise and focus, but I rarely use anything full size, so it's usually not an issue for me. I can't see it selling though, as it;s a bit close for me, and there's not really much to it. Looking at your portfolio, there's some really nice city shots that are well framed and the kind of thing I'd buy f I needed some kind of city shot... but this one, I'm not too keen on it.

Like this bad boy...

http://www.shutterstock.com/es/video/clip-17842264-stock-footage-wide-shot-of-lines-angles-and-lights-of-skyscrapers-of-the-minneapolis-downtown-skyline-k-uhd.html?src=gallery/jzCvy-lf3AXxh1wxCIg_IQ:1:97/3p

You've got a bit of foreground action in your left third, then a bit of background, middle-ground,  some trees etc... there's areas of interest and depth that I think is lacking on the other one.

I'm not seeing anything misleading. The only thing that could be seen as misleading is the part where it says free above the green add button. But the part above the green add button only ever applies to the cost of the app... so it's either free or its not free, and it shows a single price for the app. You can't add a big freehand description on varying prices of images depending on size or usage.... and even if you could, they wouldn't be related to the actual price of the app.

It does say in the body of the text that you have to pay for images and it does say you only get one free.

Now on nine sales this month, compared to my usual two or three. Long may it continue!

2158
I don't think much to his tattoo... should have gone with 'love' and 'hate'. Classic.

2159
I didn't include those in my figures. I get up to $350 a month for one of those, so theyre a bit different. I was talking about video only. And I really don't think buyers take render time into account when it comes to perceived value.

2160
$1 per clip, per month? I don't think I'd get out of bed knowing I was only going to get $60 for a clip over a five year period.

Sure, I do have a bunch of clips that get me around $1 a month, some even less, but for those I give myself a slap on the wrists and a 'must try harder' talking to.

My general thinking is if I get $5 a month then it'll do. $10 a month, then I'm reasonably happy, $20 a month, I'm very happy and then there's the few ones were I've pretty much nailed it and I get $25 to $200. If I make less than $5 a month for a clip, then I'll write it off as a bit of a failure.

That's just me though. And I guess it depends on how many clips you can produce in a day. If I could make twenty a day, then $240 over a year for that day of work wouldn't be too bad. $2400 would be a lot better though!

I have a portfolio of approximately 9,000 images on FT and Shutter. I sell between 200 and 300 images per day on SH while the average of my sales on FT is 40 images per day ... Is it the same for you? ... What can explain such a difference ? ... I read on the forum that FT is in expansion since its acquisition by Adobe, personally I see no difference. :(
I only have a fraction of your portfolio size but for me FT sales are steady while SS differs very much from month to month.
This month I have more than twice $ on FT than on SS but not because FT is better, just because SS performs very badly for me this month, mostly just subs. Sales/day don't make me happy but $$/day do.

Look at the graph to the right, that pretty much sums it up.
Sorry, I can't agree with this. Not so long ago AL was pushed artificially at the top of the list. We found out later, here in some thread that people were encouraged on their forum to vote here.

You might not agree with it, but the guy wants to know why he sells more on SS than he does on FT, and the plain and simple answer is... because he does. Some don't, but he does. The only reason I pointed out the chart was because his results correlate with the results of the poll. Mine don't, others might not, but his do.

Pond5 / Re: Pricing on Pond5
« on: September 14, 2016, 06:17 »
No it doesn't. Curiosity about the correct price point for your work signals nothing more than being sensible. Is $79 the holy grail of pricing? Does it automatically result in optimal sales numbers? What data do you have to support this? Have you priced all your clips at Pond at $10 increments from $10 to $1000 over extended periods to see exactly what the most profitable approach is?

No, I'm guessing not. Your professional opinion on the optimal minimum pricing, just happens to coincide with 'what Shutterstock charge'.

And as a result, anyone who uploads to iStock or Video blocks is a desperate amateur? If I charge less, will there be a higher sales volume, and will that volume offset the reduction in price? If I charge more, there might be a lower sales volume, but will the increase in price offset that? I don't think those are desperate or amateur questions... they're just common sense things that people should consider when they're selling products. Products that have a lot of competition across a lot of marketplaces.

2164
Look at the graph to the right, that pretty much sums it up. Exactly why there's less sales there.... that's a bit harder. I guess it's the same reason you'd sell more of your fancy tech device if it was in Best Buy rather than Dave''s Grotto of Electronica.

A crude example, but it'll have to do.

Being rude about other people's work is a slippery slope. Glass houses and all that...

Sorry Skyler, you're right.

Looks like he's been watching too much Californication!

I was interviewed for the Envato blog and noticed a decent enough boost in sales. Could have been a coincidence, but I don't think the possibility should be ruled out. If you have the time and a good topic to blog on, then I guess it can't hurt.

They're 5th for me on revenue, but only about 5% of my total. Still, worth uploading there for me. Just.

2169
The 'archive' isn't the same as the marketplace. There are a bunch of stuff that are subscription based (unlimited downloads), and the rest, which myself and most here are uploading, is the marketplace, non-subscription stuff... pay per download at $49 for HD.

2170
Best month ever on Videoblocks. I had two sales in February, March, April, May and June... three sales in July and August... and I've just had my fourth sale for September. Hopefully they'll keep going up. Or stay the same... either will do.

2171
Do you think they'll get added to the microstock poll at some point? I'm assuming the only reason they haven't been already, is that they just do video. Currently, anyway. Would be interesting to see the score. They're the third best selling site for me currently.

2172
Hi! I'm a bit worried about my footage on videoblocks. I didn't have any sale in two months (although before that my footage was selling pretty good). I wanted to check if my files appear in search results and they are. What is strange that if I sort the  search results by most downloaded then my file is on first place but I had no single sale on videoblocks of this particular file and the similar file I sold there was below this file. Are those search results "made up" or is there possibility that my file was sold and I never got any info/commission?

I delete all my footage port on Videoblocks. 6 month with more than 300 footages and no single download! On SS, FT I have more than 50 dls.
Just do not trust them more!

Is that 50 downloads on each of those sites per month, or 50 downloads across all sites over six months?

If it's the former, then it does seem pretty strange that you had no sales at VB. If it's the latter, then I've found that sales are comparatively low at VB compared to elsewhere.... I was only getting two sales a month for the first six months, three sales a month for the last couple.

Maybe you should have waited it out a bit. No massive loss in terms of time or energy by keeping them on the site.

And the royalty percentage is pretty poor. I've made about $700 there this year. If I'd had the same number of sales on VideoBlocks as I've had on iStock, I would have made about $2750 instead!

2174
I do it. Can't see anything wrong with it. I keep it at 720p and watermark though. And make sure they're clickable links by adding the http at the begging.... copying and pasting a URL is far too much of a pain!

Well it looks like I was right to wait it out. See image below. It was the July sales that were worrying me, which coincided with me doubling my prices. Big drop in sales, but thankfully things seemed to get back into gear in August and it ended up my best month ever.

Now should I get greedy and double them again to $99 for HD, or should I stick with $49? Maybe I could go to $79 to match Shutterstock.
