Independence Day in the U.S...nobody's working.
Wait a minute I am working today! - albeit Stock photos - and I live in Seattle Washington. I am trying my best to get my "Independence" from my daytime boss...
Me too...working on illustrations. Ad agencies are closed.

I hate to break it to you but Umerika is not the entire world
It's half the world in terms of microstock sales. More than half for me, in fact.

Perhaps I'll get a lot of minuses for this, but if contributors are expected to help promote the site they should get much more than 50%.

I hear you. I'm kind of getting sick of the ups and downs in income. I was doing design temp work with Aquent and iCreatives before I started in stock. It can have dead periods too, but it seemed to work pretty well. You might give that a try. I did that as well, with The Creative Group. Actually I got an email a few weeks back from an old contact at TCG asking if I was looking for work. I passed on it, but might need to reconsider.
Oh no! Not The Creative Group. They're the worst. Take a huge commission, 50% or more. I refuse to work with them. If you're interested, I can give you a couple of headhunter's contact info. PM me if so. You'll get a much better day rate.

I was an art major in college, specializing in illustration, and started taking communications classes as well because I thought I'd like to go into advertising. Wound up with a double major, and when I graduated got a job -- to everyone's surprise, especially mine -- as a writer, not an art director, in an ad agency. Rose up through the ranks to become one of the few female Creative Directors in the field (only 3% of CD's are female in the U.S.) Always drew things on the side, from copywriter's roughs to little comic strips for friends and relatives. Got plenty of rejections from greeting card companies and The New Yorker.
I don't remember how I discovered iStock, but thought I'd try and see if I could sell illustrations online. Was about to give up because the time invested wasn't worth the money I earned...I am no great illustrator...then I stumbled on Shutterstock and realized I could actually make a return for time invested doing stock illustrations.
At this point in my career I'm tired of the rampant misogyny in my industry and the hellish commute and long hours, and would love to transition to illustration full time. Am a bit worried about that with the big drop in my earnings over the past couple of months, though. But I'm trying to always improve my skills and may even pick up a paint brush one of these days.

Down, down, down, at both SS and iS. What's interesting to me is how the numbers for SS and iS exclusive are getting closer to each other in the poll.

Again, it reads like they don't understand the question.
I don't know. It sounds like they understand the question perfectly, answer it ("yes, regardless of subscription type") and then try to spin it in the best light by pointing out that you earn that amount even if a file sells for sixteen cents. Which might happen once in a while, but clearly the average sub sale must bring in much more or they'd drop regular sub sales because they'd be losing money.

I'm not with them, but now I certainly plan to avoid them.

Shutterstock requires the line "portions of this image supplied by NASA" in the description.

Not to mention that some Creative Commons work is actually stolen or appears there by accident.

Yet "we" opted out almost 7 million images from DPC.

They may be involved, but quietly. For example, I doubt only 89 people removed 7 million images from DPC, so many more people must have quietly opted out without saying anything publicly. An online petition might get lots of votes. It's just a matter of what the petition's about. For that you need some initial consensus.

Also, big ad agencies and clients like to have image exclusivity, even if just for a set period while a campaign runs.

All my subscription sales show up on may 1st, though when I download the csv I see I had them throughout the month.
However, my earnings have dropped substantially in May. It looks like it's probably what I feared...subs sales have cannibalized my regular sales, rather than adding a new income stream. So sales that would have made 3 or 4 bucks now make $.28.
Very sad.

Really, that sux, if they have that language up for every hopeful applicant to read. They should revise or delete that language. I feel bad for Kathi.

I haven't seen any app like that, and I'm not sure how it would work. You'd have to be careful not to let any portion of your hand touch the surface of the iPad, because the touch of your hand will register on the capacitive screen, I believe. (I could be wrong.) So it would be awkward if you lay the iPad down like a Wacom.
Edited to add: ha! Turns out I'm wrong. There are several videos on YouTube explaining how to use an iPad this way. Rather than using a graphics app, you would use an app that lets you control/see your desktop from your iPad. I just googled "using ipad to draw on computer."

The whole problem with Unions or collectives or whatever you want to call the organization is you have to be able to control the source of production. The people who read this forum represent 1%? of the total images in micro stock.
I don't know. We were able to remove almost 25% of DPC's images in a month, so I would say we control a lot more than 1%. Following the Pareto Principle, about 20% of microstock contributors should control about 80% of all microstock content. So a relatively small number of people should be able to wield a significant amount of power.
true, but only IF those 20% are part of the movement -- just taking ANY 20% won't do the job
Of course. But my point is that you don't need every single microstock contributor, or even a majority, to join in a "movement" (if there was one) to be successful. Get the top 20% or even 10% to come together and you'd have serious bargaining power. And I would guess that many of those contributors are involved with or at least read these forums, based on what happened with DPC. That makes sense, because those contributors would be more serious about microstock and, I would think, more likely to look for forums concerning the industry.

Do you mean you want to use it like a Wacom to draw on your laptop or desktop computer, or to draw on the iPad itself, separate from a computer?
