Envato / Re: Unusual Numbers
« on: May 25, 2016, 03:31 »
Withholding tax. Go into your settings and fill out the W8 or W9. Depends on where you're based, and whether you enter a tax ID number, but the tax could be reduced to zero. So you'd then get $3.24 in your balance for an $11 sale, rather than $3.24

Yeah, I got it as well. I can only assume it's a new message they've added which they want shown to first time uploaders, but they couldn't figure out how to make it not show for anyone who had uploaded previously... so anyone uploading after it has been implemented is seeing it. Or I could be completely wrong!

Yeah, AudioJungle is worth a try. 36% non-exclusive, 50 to 70% exclusive. Tracks of over two minutes sell for $19 to $304 depending on the license.

The most disturbing thing I've learned from this thread is how many people still submit to iStock, even with all the crap they pull and the insulting smallest % in the industry they pay out. Yes, I realize this means they're a "top 5" income generator for so many, but at what cost in the long term? They're crooked, lying thieves, and perpetuate the weakening of our role in the partnerships we have with the stock companies. Anyone still submitting to them is contributing to the demise of all of our futures, doing what we do.

Oh please.  ::)  Says the guy whose top site is Pond5, the site that's in the process of erroding the video market like. IS erroded the still photo market.  Check out this thread:

www.microstockgroup.com/pond5/the-membership-program-is-a-disaster-for-contributors/msg454565/?topicseen#new

Also, FYI, Istock is one of my top sellers despite not uploading there for almost 2 years.

Pond5 pays out 50%, more than 3 times iStock's 15%. Some ridiculously simple math to overlook when evaluation of one's role is in a business situation, and what the company believes the creator of the content is worth to them. Claiming they're "erroding" the market in any comparable way to iStock is absolute nonsense.

A few cynical speculative opinions can't change the fact that Pond5 treats us like a an equal partner, while too many are perfectly fine being given ever shrinking scraps by a company that views it's contributors with contempt. iStock is only relevant and gets away with it what they get away with because people keep blindly uploading to them, no matter how bad the deal is.

I hear what you're saying Dayrl but you must remember that I make more money per sale on istock than most of all the other sites. There % is crap but then they sell clips for much higher. In fact they are helping us videographer's by keeping prices high. If you want more % from them then go exclusive.
The sites that are negative for our industry are those selling clips for pennies. Getty and istock are keeping prices high.

I have to concur. I get stick for selling on Envato, but they make me about three or four times more than SS, iS FT and VB combined. 100% commission is great, but not if you get $1 a sale. $100 a sale is great, but not if you get one sale a year. It's all about how much cold, hard cash you get in your account at the end of the year. I wouldn't care if I was getting a 1% commission and clips sell for $1, if that resulted in me getting $500K a year. Unlikely, but hey, it's just an example. I appreciate the talk about erosion and all that jazz, but if that erosion results in me getting $500K, then is it that bad? It might be bad fr others, but price erosion on microstock is far from slavery, trafficking, poverty and human right violations.

Thanks!

2306
Yeah, I've got less than 60 clips! I'm working on it though  :D

2307
Not much! I mean, yeah, there's a definite upward trend which is great, but it's very intermittent compared to everyone else!

Lol!  :-[

Apart from two small templates I uploaded a few months back, all of my After Effects templates have been uploaded in the last month, maybe two. Envato was still my best seller before that. I can't upload those same templates to VB as they're on my exclusive account... so I'd have to remove them from Envato first.

As for Shutterstock, I've been uploading all my non-exclusive stuff there, and have also deleted a dozen or so from my exclusive Envato account so I could upload them there, and a bunch of other sites, but nothing to write home about with regards to sales yet. Fingers crossed!

Even if I don't include templates in my sales, this month so far, Envato exclusive sales have been at least six times more than Pond5. Motion graphics stuff does pretty well there.

2310
1. Envato (Exclusive Account)
2. Envato (Non-Exclusive Account)
3. Pond5
4. VideoBlocks
5. iStock and Shutterstock (Less than $1 between them this year, so have lumped them together!)

Adobe Stock / Re: US Sales - Declining
« on: May 18, 2016, 03:28 »
From all the sites where I have the available data... my US sales average for the last year was 44%. This month it's 35%, the lowest yet.

2312
Got mine this morning. I'm assuming there's some kind of lag from when the money is subtracted from your balance, to when it arrives in your account. Especially on a Sunday.

2313
50% or higher, maybe with achievable increases for multiple sales.
The ability to add descriptions to the clips.
The ability to upload zip files that contain additional items (like a matte for isolating elements or layered clips for motion graphics elements.
The ability to choose a frame number rather than auto generated preview images.
Set your own prices, or have price tiers that you can select, a bit like 123RF.
A profile page that you can customize with a logo, overview, portfolio etc.
Extended licenses.
Maybe bundles. Maybe not.
A nice web upload thing and not just FTP.
The ability to tag and describe/set up items while they're uploading
Reviews within a week or less.
A nice stats page with all the info you could want. Charts, breakdowns by clips, months etc.
Free drinks. Parties.

2314
I've had between 0 and 5 sales there a month, usually one or two though. Nothing this month so far. I've got 73 videos in my portfolio, about 15 of which were just uploaded this week.

2315
Got a 4K sale at SS last night, so it's now a small drop over last month, compared to a big drop!

2316
Big drop on SS this month, but my sales are always erratic there. Slight drop on iS, massive drop on Fotolia, normal sales on VB, slight increase on P5.

2317
Ah right, I thought you were on about number of downloads per video, per day... not total number of downloads per day, over an entire portfolio. Sorry!

34 sales in one day was my best result ever. That was only last month. On average, I probably have about 10 to 15 sales a day across my entire portfolio and all sites.

2318
When Pond5 used to show sales figures on item pages, I remember checking out the number one selling video clip and it was about 1000 sales over a period of three years. So that would make it roughly one download a day. Sales were probably higher earlier on though, so two a day would probably be more likely. I'm not sure what the sales are like on Shutterstock/iStock/Fotolia compared to Pond 5, but I'd be surprised if they are ten times more.

So although 10 to 20 a day is probably feasible, I think you could probably count on one hand the amount of clips that have achieved that, and I'm not sure how sustainable that would be.

0.5 sales a day over a ten month period is my best result.

2319
I'm meaning 'target' as in who they promote their offering to, which demographic they go after, not who they'll sell to. They'll sell to anyone, and rightly so... just like nearly every company will, but that doesn't necessarily mean they don't targeted a specific buyer or group of buyers. McDonalds target a certain type of person, and it's very unlikely they run ads in Tatler, Horse and Hound or the Michelin Guide, but I'm sure they'd be quite happy if a such buyers roll along.

I've been on Envato, either as a buyer or a seller for about seven years, and they've never reallyu marketed themselves to big production houses. Of course, they'll take their money like they will anyone else, but it's always been a market for the kind of people that set up Youtube channels, blogs and the like, low budget productions, freelancers etc. Ten/fifteen years ago... shooting, editing and publishing videos was a lot harder and more expensive. The people who did such things could afford $100, $250, $500 for once clip. Like After Effects templates... if you're the average guy or gal on the street, hoping to become the next Youtube sensation and want an intro for your vids... are you going to hire an AE artist at $100 an hour, or get a template for $20?

Although there is a lot of crossover, I'll agree, there's a bit of a spectrum when it comes to people who buy stock... and Envato are more for those near the ultraviolet. Or infrared, depending on which end we're classing as 'high end'.

Maybe they are eroding the market? Maybe the microstock people are eyeing the nanostock people like the macrostock people were eyeing the microstock people? I'm not sure. But as much as I enjoy making vfx and motion graphics stuff, I also enjoy earning money, and if Envato are earning me a decent amount of money then that works for me. You make it sound like it;s unethical to sell on Envato... but it's not like I'm running a sweatshop, destroying the environment or and promoting wage inequality. I can't see Amnesty International, The Red Cross and the United Nations banding together to highlight the plight of Shutterstock/iStock/Fotolia providers due to the erosion of their natural habitat.

2320
Whether they say they're the seller, they're not the seller, or they're intergalactic being from another universe... they are charging VAT because they have to. I'm not sure why everyone is so fixated on Envato (or anyone else) saying that they're not the seller, as it has nothing to do with their VAT responsibilities.

I'm fixated on their plan to 1099 us for 80% of the sale price while paying us 36%.

Well yeah, that's a different kettle of badgers altogether!

2321
Be realistic, if you're not earning US$25 per download NET then you're going to struggle to be successful in the long run.

The amount you earn per download has only a very tenuous link to how successful one is in the long run. Isn't it about $45 per download on ClipCanvas, $25 on ClipDealer? I've had one sale out of the both of them this year.

Nobody is going to argue that $25 per clip is a lot better than $4 a clip, but when it comes to being successful (financially), surely it's the total in the bank that counts, not the amount per clip? You can get $250 per HD download, but if you only sell one or a two a year then you're going to be living on a bench. Obviously I'm not saying that people who don't upload to Envato are earning less that those that do... just trying to make the point that a high sales figure isn't always the 'be all and end all'.

2322
Who really wants to deal with that when there are so many sites that don't have this problem?

By "don't have this problem", do you mean they're not charging VAT when they should be?

2323

Until they become an agency or a real marketplace and change their pricing forget it.  The argument that they "target a different market" is hogwash.  Lowball pricing is lowball pricing. It has an effect holistically if they gain share. Why? They are taking business from other agencies. So until other key business strategies change, upload ease doesn't do anything for me at least.

Lowball pricing can be lowball pricing AND they can target a different market. They're not mutually exclusive!
