General Stock Discussion / Re: Uniting contributors for better royalty, price control and safeguarding this industry« on: April 16, 2019, 10:17 »The really big problem in MicroStock is that the business model has changed over recent years, it used to be about a partnership with the Agencies to sell our work. I call that revisionist history. iStockphoto was never a partner to its suppliers, as much as they pretended otherwise. Start with a 20% royalty for nonexclusives and then continue with the heavy handed administration of their supplier forums. Complaints, and there were many, were beaten down quickly and forcefully. And then there was the increasing difficulty of submitting content, with their controlled vocabulary and the lack of FTP service. I started with iStock, but was glad to deemphasize them once Shutterstock began to produce for me. But most of the agencies (and all the successful ones) treated this business as a business and its suppliers as a vital part of that business. I'd add that my experience with Fotolia was rocky from the start as well, and only really turned around with the Adobe acquisition. 28
General Stock Discussion / Re: Keywording software apart from bridge« on: April 06, 2019, 15:39 »
If you're on a Mac, I can recommend Graphic Converter. It provides simple text boxes for keyword lists, so you can copy, paste and edit easily. I've relied on it for years. It does a lot more than keyboarding, including GPS coordinate editing, image catalogue generation and complete batch processing.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Shutterstock refuse model release from app "easy release"« on: May 10, 2018, 17:23 »
Was this the message?
Quote Model Release: A model release is required for this image or the attached model release does not meet our requirements, is illegible, or additional model releases are needed. This translates as: Quote We don't like your release. We may have liked it before, but we don't like it now. We won't tell you what we don't like about it unless you contact Support. You can try resubmitting with a new release, but that's just as likely to get rejected. Sucks to be you. No, I'm not bitter. Why do you ask? 33

Software / Re: X-Rite Colormunki Photo - Monitor Calibration« on: March 04, 2018, 10:59 »
I saw a pretty dramatic color shift when I first applied Colormunki to my 2013 MacBook Pro. It's been stable since, but that first adjustment surprised me. If you're not sure the calibration worked, try taking a photo of a gray card after adjusting the white balance in your camera (or later in Lightroom or Photoshop). If the gray looks gray, all's well. If not, maybe there's a problem with your Colormunki.

Peter at StockFresh responded to my message. He was surprised at the cost of a Certificate from the IRS and said a scan of my ID would suffice. So all's well at least for now.

Yeah, I ran into the same thing when I tried to request a payout this afternoon. I had a surprisingly good month with them, enough that my payout is just slightly more than that IRS fee. I sent them a message asking about the specific requirement. If they insist on that IRS certificate, I'll tell them to delete my port and close my account. In every respect I agree with your comments. Making a change like this without notifying us is bad form.

Adobe Stock / Re: Update your 2014 tax form« on: December 20, 2017, 18:44 »How do I know when my tax form was created? It says no expiration date and I have no idea whether this is old from FT days or newer. If you go to the Tax Center, there's a link on the right labeled See my tax forms. The forms are listed by creation and validation dates, which are the same for my forms. 39

The limit is on import/submission. You can upload via FTP beyond the 20/week limit, but you can only submit the first 20.

Newbie Discussion / Re: Exclusive VS indie for beginners?« on: September 28, 2017, 09:14 »
Submit to a few sites. You will learn which ones will accept your work, and which ones have customers who want it. I don't believe exclusivity is a good deal for most creators in the microstock world. I know it would have been bad for me. But how can you know which agency will be the one to devote all your resources to supplying without getting some experience first?

General Stock Discussion / Re: Famous photographer promoting workshops with stock photos?« on: September 23, 2017, 08:54 »
It may not be illegal (I'm not a lawyer and won't pretend to be one here), but it strikes me as highly unethical. The photos on his site are heavily retouched, so unless he spends a lot of time in his workshops teaching editing techniques, his attendees will never get results like the ones he uses in his promotions. And that's separate from any issues with locations attendees won't get to. The workshops I've attended use either SooC or minimally edited shots; they give me a sense of what I'll have in front of my camera, but what I do with the opportunity depends largely on me. This feels a lot more like fraud, even if it doesn't cross any legal lines.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Tattoo accepter or not« on: September 07, 2017, 12:20 »
Don't blame Shutterstock. As I recall the details, a judge hearing a dispute between Mike Tyson's tattoo artist and the producers of The Hangover 2 said the plaintiff had a strong case for copyright violation, leading the producers to settle. That led SS and other agencies to require a property release signed by the artist for any images with visible tattoos. They don't want to be sued, or to have it happen to their clients. Seems perfectly reasonable to me. A tattoo is original art, and the rights to that art belong to its creator, just as we own the art we create. So I either avoid models with tattoos, shoot them so their ink doesn't show or edit it out.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Wisdom of submitting to 10 Microstock Agencies« on: July 14, 2017, 10:33 »
Don't get hung up about the number. What matters to me are the incremental effort and payoff from each agency. If the financial benefit justifies the work, then I'll submit my work. If it doesn't, I won't. With each agency I may try submitting a set of images and see how they do. I won't go beyond that first set unless I see some sales. And even then I make a decision about whether to upload everything or just a number that matches the sales they bring in.
I have a list of first tier agencies that get my new work. Second tier get images every time they sell something. Then there are a few I uploaded to but eventually figured out they were wasting my time. I check them occasionally for signs of life, but that's it. 46

General Stock Discussion / Re: What model release to use for all agencies« on: June 02, 2017, 13:20 »
I use a slightly modified version of the Getty Images release. Theirs had some odd language about the laws of the country closest to various Getty offices, which I replaced with an explicit reference to US law. It's been accepted everywhere, and when it's rejected, it's because it wasn't filled out completely or someone made a mistake in the format of a date (month/day/year where the form calls for day/month/year).

Hi) I'm new at Canva, cannot find how to upload model release and where attach to photos. Could you help me? A fair question, and one they don't answer on the site. What you need to do is to put the release and the associated images in a folder and upload the whole folder to the FTP site. Make sure the release file has "release" at the beginning of its name. There's no way to determine if you got it right, or any way to connect a release to image files once you've submitted them. I haven't uploaded any released photos to Canva in quite a while, and had to search this forum to remind myself how it worked. I'm guessing not too many people supply that kind of content to Canva. 50
General Stock Discussion / Re: How to release tattoo ?« on: April 28, 2017, 17:09 »How to delete tattoo? Learn to get really good with Photoshop and the Healing Brush. It depends on the size and location of the tattoo, and whether or not it is partially covered by clothing or anything else. Small tattoos on relatively even areas of skin are pretty easy to remove with software; things get harder from there. Better to position the model so the tattoo doesn't show if you can do that, or cover it with clothing. Or pick a model who doesn't have them; that's my preferred solution. |
