I would go with Jo Anns approach. To get started, you should see how your images perform overall (season-wise, subjects, niches, specialties) and statisticly, its better to draw conclusions from greater samples. Thats why I would recommend sites with big traffic to start.

Its working for me, my 3rd seller after IS and SS, but I sell mostly illustrations and some photographs.

If istock paid one dollar a glitch, I would leave them my royalties.

Considering this was my dropping-crown-year, I think it was a decent one. Sales werent great, and I would like some other site to step up and get closer to IS and SS sales. On the bright side, Ive managed to learn a lot about the rest of the agencies... also, I like to think my skills improved a bit, and finally, got my symbiostock site, so I have great hopes for 2014.
Is it worthwhile to drop the crown and uploading to multiple agencies?
Not quite yet, but almost there. Getting rid of that "my-future-depends-only-on-these-guys" feeling also helps through the wait.

Im no expert (I mostly contribute vectors), but maybe the subject and uniqueness also matter in this case? Although they didn't mention it in that "automatic reply", but if the photos were a new look on a subject, or really original, maybe the technical quality could be enough. It's a combination of reasons.

No complains here... I prefer a steady-selling agency that could improve it looks, rather than the hipster, smooth and funky ones which sell nothing. But that's just me.

I also had my share of rejections over fotolia. Granted you are right and those were unfounded, still your decision of leaving might be a bit rush. As you said, you submitted a small amount of images. Rejections are always frustrating, but enduring some of them, might give you sales from the third site on the poll. If you dont, you will also miss the chance to complain about some other issues! Good luck whether you decide to try again or not.

You go first second.
OK: I think Symbiostock has the potential to be one of the biggest stories in 2014. I am not part of it but can see that it is a big achievement already. I could definitely see groups emerging from within it and forming their own mini-agencies whilst still being in some ways part of the wider project as a whole. I would expect to see some big 'players' joining which should give it a boost. Maybe even subscriptions. It needs to be a much more unified customer experience like an agency - but I have no doubt that will gradually happen and especially within smaller groups.
Personally - Alamy RM and Airbnb is becoming a big part of my life. And much smaller cameras - since I like to be able to travel with only carry-on luggage.
I really hope you are right on Symbiostock!

It does sound like a good deal. If it works, I could think of some new simple illustrations to fit into those tiny ads.

Learn a lot about SEO with self-hosting and keep on drawing. I agree, the peak has passed, but Im also convinced microstock will still make sense for dedicated contributors.

I must confess, the OP kinds made sense to me even before reading it, but after reading this thread, got convinced otherwise. Everybody should link or not as they please.

Ive stopped uploading to most of them (excluding DP, my 3rd selller), but I guess I wont be closing my accounts. I could add some that extra I tried but didnt get sales: Panthermedia, Cutcaster and Stockami.

Your kind of hand-drawn illustrations when properly traced, are usually approved, as long as you can provide the original scanned drawing. Ive been uploading much less elaborate cartoon for years, and Im no expert. You shoud also go the extra mile about subject!

Graphic and web designer for 30 years. Stock Photography has spoiled me. I hate (most) clients and don't budge on pricing with the branding work and don't take the crap I used to. Ya get jaded over the years. Life is so much better now.
Thought I was the only one. : )
