I don't know what he means, but I don't think it is possible that he means $8,000 in less than two weeks.
His iStock profile says he's sold > 40,000 licenses with a portfolio of 1,600 images. At an average of $2 per download he'd have sold 4,000 licenses to make $8K.
I'm curious too.
Christian's a great photographer, but I am skeptical even he could have sold either $8,000 worth or 8,000 rc's worth of images in just a few days.
Chris, can you elaborate?
maybe 8$

They will definitely come out today. Joyze said that this time they will live up to that promise. sadly, their history doesn't exactly give me faith in this statement. From the May 13 post by Joyze:
Redeemed Credit Targets: I know that we promised these awhile ago and we have not lived up to that promise. This time, we will. Redeemed credit targets will be announced in three weeks.

yes you need a release. rule of thumb: if you have to ask, then you need one.

^^^And Batman? It's either all the same person or they're all travel photographers that detest microstock and end up with severe keyboard rage.
hahaha ! paranoia abunds here.
Just had a look at some old posts by Macrosaur and the way you both use a small "i" and your writing style is almost identical. Sorry, no paranoia here, you're the Macrosaur in sheep's clothing
I guess it's not paranoia if it is true, eh?

May was pretty crappy for me. My iStock earnings were about 50% less than the previous months since I dropped my crown there last fall. In fact, I made less there the entire month of May than I used to make in a week before they (iStock) screwed up the site so bad. The good news for me is that both DT and SS are picking up sales. I'm slowly building ports on other sites and my plan is to double my ports on these other sites by the end of the month. so right now I'm mostly tracking my port size so I can concentrate on building. I posted a brief update on my blog, if anyone cares to read it. http://imajphotodesign.com/blog/june-2011-independence-status

I think the final straw for me has been the big increase in rejections with Shutterstock. They are rejecting things that I know would make money.
I have some interesting data on that as I've been uploading to Shutterstock a lot in the last few weeks. Most of the files are ones on which I have sales data already (from the last year or two). Shutterstock has rejected several of my best selling images on iStock as having limited commercial value. ex-Vetta images rejected as having poor lighting, images with shallow DOF as improper focus, etc.
They've accepted a ton of things too, but I half thought of challenging the LCV rejections on the basis of the proven sales value of those files. I decided it just isn't worth the time to do as each site will just do it's own thing and my sanity lies in just accepting their foibles if I'm to sell there.
Joanne, this is exactly my philosophy. I don't even bother with most rejections. In fact, since uploading to DT and SS I've had some (what I feel) crazy rejections for stuff that has sold well on iStock. At first it made me cringe and then I just moved past it and now I don't even waste my time because I know my files are for sale somewhere else anyway so they are getting exposure elsewhere. The only rejections I've resubmitted were for ones where I accidentally uploaded an iStock model release instead of the generic one. I did correct that and all the images were subsequently approved.

Funny you should mention the t-shirt. I also have one, think I got it at Photoshop World (not sure). Anyway, I was going to wear it out this morning, but took it off, thinking I didn't want to publicly endorse them anymore and decided I would wear it for kicking around the house.
Things aren't so far gone that the istock community can't be returned to it's former glory. I disagree with that statement. I suppose there will always be contributors and/or buyers that will rally at whatever happens (especially those with the istockholm syndrome), but for me, I would NEVER back this company again, as it stands today. If it were sold and it looked like the new owners had better business ethics I might give it a shot, but I don't want to be aligned with companies who treat people this way.
I have several t-shirts as well. the ones I still wear are the ones I've gotten at the minilypses that I have attended. I still have fond memories and friendships from those. I used to have an iStock sticker on the back window of my 4runner and when it would start peeling, I'd put a new one on. after the last one wore out I scraped off the remains and now have about 3 or 4 stickers just sitting in a desk drawer. I used to be a huge evangelist. Now I'm just one of the photographers who sells their photos through them.

it says "partial void" so being that it was last year it's possible that istock gave the customer a partial refund but they covered that and did not ding you any of your royalties. yes, i think it is possible that there are still a few good things that istock does for its contributors now and then.

haven't sold one xl or larger since the sale. but downloads have picked up so maybe the sale is at least getting people to come to the site and buy something.
I think it's just the best match shift. As many people are reporting plummeting sales the last several days as are reporting improved sales. Some win, some lose.
yes, I think you're probably right. I"ll take any sales I can get at this point!

Say good-bye to jerryleeg:
I've been using istock extensively for years and when the last of my credits run out, I'm going to have to move on. With no way to sort by price and no improvements to the search functionality, trying to find a suitable image at a price I or my clients would be willing to pay has become such a time consuming and frustrating chore. Thankfully, not all of istock's competitors have chosen greed over usability.

This sort of thing is 'unsustainable'. At what point will Istock actually realise it and attempt to turn the ship around? The 'How was your May' reports should make interesting reading on the Istock forum ... for Shutterstock anyway.
Message from Jon Oringer - "Return home Agent Thompson. Mission complete"
I fear it may well end up being "too little too late" by the time they decide to turn the ship around they will already be crashing into that large part of the iceberg that they refuse to acknowledge existence of.

istock's prices are already too high.
Istock's prices are often higher but not always. Here's a SpiderPic comparison.
Interesting that CanStockPhoto almost always has the cheapest pricing and they're also one of the sites that's ranked as worst sales/earner for contributors. Wonder why.
And if you have an image at multiple sites and suddenly buyers all flock to CanStockPhoto how would that affect your earnings?
is that comparison on all the same size image? just checking.

I have the picworkflow bar on my browser, it shows about five more dollars in my IS account that IS shows, this just started about 48 hrs ago, IS has never shown the new sales. Not worth all the headaches to try to track down the missing $5 in sales.
Is it $5 exactly? Could be a referral fee. Did you check that?

Ah - Amazon UK doesn't do it. I accidentally bought something I'd previously bought a couple of years ago, and I just checked just now with something I bought last year, and there was no warning.
Yes it does. It has to be the identical product though.
and make sure you're logged in.

It's hardly a bug or a con-trick, is it? If you can't be bothered to check what you've got on file, then I don't see why it is iStock's job to do that for you.
true, but excellent customer service. Which is why Amazon is still on top and iStock is slipping - fast.

Another one here: http://www.istockphoto.com/forum_messages.php?threadid=329638&page=1
"I would like iStockPhoto's website to inform me if I have already purchased a photo, even 2 years ago. I have started buying elsewhere since it is too easy to buy the same photos again and waste money. I have too many purchased photos to go through everytime I make a new purchase----so I am taking business elsehwhere until this is fixed and your site is more user-friendly."
That's a slightly odd one. Do the other agencies always tell people if they've bought an image before? Even Amazon doesn't do that!
Later: I see SuperSean has replied with a Greasemonkey script which does that. I can only echo Peregrina: where does he get the time to even learn how to do that stuff far less actually do it.
actually Amazon does tell me -- check this out on something I bought in 1998!

I think that when customer say Istock is greedy, they are also saying we, photographers, are greedy as well. Very few of them show concern for what commision we get; most of them only mind the price they have to pay. And there are different kinds of clients. Well, I prefer to be "greedy", sell my files cheap but no so cheap at the price of selling less. Consider that I would need about 688 subscription sales (at average of 0.30) to match what I've done until now today just with Vetta and Agency files (all larger sizes, all 20% discounted).
I don't think most customers distinguish between photographer and the company (istock in this case). They see the product, it's sold by istock, istock charges too much for it. period. they don't go beyond that and think about the fact that there's another party in all this and that's the photographer who gets their small cut of that sales price.

yes it does seem an inordinate long time for review. I have high hopes for veer as I like the site and variety that they offer. I think it is appealing to buyers and hope they keep up the ad campaign to bring on more buyers.
So I'm slowly building my port there but it's much slower having to wait a month for anything to get approved.

this just in...another buyer -- Quote from designcentric at http://www.istockphoto.com/forum_messages.php?threadid=329630&page=1 Since Getty purchased iStock and has steadily been increasing the prices of the photos I've pretty much jumped ship. It's funny what happens when corporate greed gets inserted into a good community conceptit kills it. Take notice Getty Corp, I used to spend thousands of dollars buying photos, now it's been reduced to less than hundreds. Don't assume your users are simply dumb frogs that can be boiled if you turn up the heat slowly. Everyone notices and I've almost stopped using your product.
The Getty management team needs to be ejected.

yep, if you've seen the thread at istock, that was the culprit -- a bug in the app. here is a snip of what I reported to them: The image which shows as downloaded (by the app) just after the missing 5 downloads is this one http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup.php?id=14987208 (which would be listed in the "Last Downloads" just before the 5 missing photos/downloads show up on that page). As I continued to try to figure out the issue I noticed that if you go to the file closeup page for the recorded download http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup.php?id=14987208 and you look in my description area on that page you'll see 5 additional thumbnails that link to related photos from this series. These just happen to be the 5 other files that are showing up as downloaded by your iPhone app but not being reported as downloaded by iStockphoto. Is this a bug I've discovered in the iPhone app as misreporting downloads that didn't really happen? --- as reported by the developer, it is indeed an bug and I checked this morning and those files that showed as downloaded are now gone and it is reporting properly. bummer that I didn't actually get downloads, of course, but glad to see the bug squashed and the issued resolved.

I just sent out the email to 21Torr and asked for some clarification on this. Before that, I did a little more research and I think it may be a bug in their iPhone app. It's a little complicated to type up so I'm going to wait and see if I'm correct in my analysis that I sent to them then I'll report back here and let you all know.

From the app store "Due to an update on istockphoto.com the "Last Downloads" feature was temporarily not available. This issue is resolved now. If you encounter any problems please do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected]. Thank you."
Thanks i didnt see that. Maybe my issue is related to this. I will email them to find out.

if it shows that I have more downloads that istock is not recording then that is a big deal. I don't get why you are being so negative.
Tell me if I understand. Someone else makes an app that reports downloads wrong, so you blame IS for the problem? Is that it?
Please dont read something that is not there into what i wrote. I am not putting blame anywhere. I am trying to find out where there is a decrepancy. The "blame" could be on either side at this point because i have yet to get all the facts.
