Symbiostock - General / Re: Blocking Spam Registrations

I've done some very limited searches and so far whenever I find my images they've been from the agency with the cheapest prices.

Which agencies are you with that PE are displaying? So far it's only been PE directly hosted. Justin's other agencies, Corbis and Depositphotos.

253
Still doesn't work. I am copying and pasting that code in the Appearance>Editor style.css section of the child. Is that where it goes?

That's the right place for it. It sounds as if you've got a corrupted header on that file, so it's not being read. It might be a good idea to deactivate, delete and reinstall your child theme, having taken a copy of any mods to style.css. Then start putting the mods in one by one, making sure you add them to the bottom of the file. The order doesn't matter.

I didn't want to make any content unsearchable - thats why its here. But you could do #searchform #select_type {display: hidden;} ... I haven't tested it, but its a trick worth trying.

no, didnt work. I put it under styles.css in the editor of the child. But thanks.

I browsed through everyone's sites a while ago...someone else removed it...maybe I can email them and ask.

Try this:

#symbiostock_main_search #select_type {
   display: none;
}

That did not work for me. I even put a dot in front of textarea, thinking it was a class? Still no worky. :-(

Funny, it's working for us with Contact Form 7. <textarea> is a standard tag. Thinking about it, it would be better as

.wpcf7 textarea {
  width: 80%;
}
 to avoid it affecting comment boxes. Here's what it does for us:

Symbiostock - Network Building / Re: Change of Address
« on: April 22, 2013, 17:25 »

which url did you want in the network list?

It should be http://www.picturemojo.co.nz/ but it looks as if Leo will have to fix parsing two part TLDs before that can be accepted. Can you leave the old one for now, and change it when we know the new one is acceptable? Either of the photo or images subdomains will work, they have 301 redirects on.

Thanks.

Software - General / Re: Exif time change
« on: April 21, 2013, 23:44 »
I did the idiot thing and forgot to change the time on one of my cameras, which is important for editorial (looks as though I took some daylight shots in the middle of the night). I've got a couple of hundred files to change.
I've Googled and see quite a few old suggestions about what to use to sort this (I don't have LR). Some are expensive and do much more than I need, and some of the free ones are too techy (command line etc), so scary.
Has anyone got experience of a cheap and easy prog/app/utility to change a batch of EXIF date/times?

TIA

ExifToolGUI from http://u88.n24.queensu.ca/~bogdan/exiftoolgui515.zip

You can define a time shift and apply it to a batch of photos. Very useful for forgetful globetrotters - been there, done that, got the dodgy timestamps!

Symbiostock - Network Building / Re: Change of Address
« on: April 21, 2013, 19:21 »
After a bit of Googling around we decided that we needed more uniqueness in our site and domain naming. The Web is knee deep in Travel(l)ing Lights, and any name with photo and/or stock is likely to be swamped by adverts from the big players.

So, our independent Symbio site is at http://www.picturemojo.co.nz with a 301 redirect from the old URL. The change should be pretty seamless, with just the labels changing.

259

Edit...i am going to change to the one cidepix is recommending tho because i cant figure out how to change the length of the fields in contact form 7.

For the message area, add to your child style.css

textarea {
  width: 80%;
}

or adjust to taste.

We will be putting some things only on SY, mainly things that we think will sell only in small numbers so not worth putting on the micros.

Also, our micro income is not growing, another reason for not putting everything there. Only our macro sites are slowly increasing.

We are looking at SY as a long term project, and we will gradually add more niche subjects, especially things that can't easily be copied.

Alamy.com / Re: how long to have a reply from Alamy?
« on: April 19, 2013, 20:30 »

this one? memberservices AT alamy.com

That's the one for most things. Don't think we've ever had to wait more than 48 hours for an acknowledgement at least.

Just thinking out loud here, so forgive if what I say is dumb.

Just relating Sym to FAA. If I go and make comments about someone's artwork, they get a record of that on their page, so the page has grown in content, so Google goes back to see what's new. That person then says thanks, which is more content, and if I'm lucky they come and comment on my image, which makes my page grow, and I say thanks, so my page grows more, and Google comes back, and all this improves the ranking of my image on FAA website but at the same time improves the Google rank of FAA. Is that correct?

If that's correct, then the more we comment on each others work on our Sym sites, then the higher we will rank on Google.

FAA also have a busy forum - does that help SEO? If so, should we find a way to make all this talk on MSG help the ranking of Sym, maybe by moving the Sym forum to Sym.com? Or is it better for now to have the chat here to encourage others to set up on Sym?

I am not too sure about the value of likes and/or positive comments at all. Do they really convince an image buyer to buy a particular image? Maybe it's good for SEO. I don't have clue. I definitely don't want to police comments for spam and trolling. But I'd have no trouble dealing with a few more tick-boxes (if necessary), so everyone can decide for their own.
A wikianswers person tipped me off that comments were very valuable.

If a page grows in content, google keeps coming back to see whats new. If you have an education image, and someone comments that they want to use it for their "school, a project...and I have these questions..." it also improves semantic aspects, with the search engine recognizing this is more likely an image having to do with education on a given subject, and no doubt you get scores for interesting content as well. The reward in the end is more exposure to the properly targeted audience - thus the power of comments.

...if we can work out styling them better and making them more subtle- then maybe more people will be happy to include them.

In fact I've wanted to comment on quite a few images I've seen - and no doubt network buddies might want to do that sort of thing to help eachother.

Depending on how far you webmasterly people want to go, there are some nice books on the subject of SEO.

Yes indeed, me too. If it's good for SEO, lets do it!

uploaded a small batch of images -- the iptc was read for some of them, but most showed up with no title, desc or keywords.  when I look at the images in exiftool gui all info is there & when I load them to smugmug all info is read.

Further data points on this:- When we uploaded some images by FTP from Photoshelter, quite a few had no metadata, although some of it appeared when the images were edited. All files (700+ to date) FTP'd by Filezilla direct from my desktop have arrived intact.

Also, the direct uploader doesn't think I have Flash. Adobe thinks I do.

Symbiostock - SEO & Marketing / Re: Alt text for images
« on: April 18, 2013, 15:49 »
The downside of not using 'title' on category or search result pages is that browsers use it for the hover text. Customers like to know what they're looking at.

Symbiostock - Network Building / Re: Networking and Pricing
« on: April 18, 2013, 13:54 »
It's not only the prices that vary it's the terms of our license agreements, too. For a buyer used to the consistency of one agency this will be confusing and possibly less attractive. The fact that every SY site requires its own registration and has its own cart/checkout adds to the problem.

But who of us wants to give up the freedom and flexibility SY provides us in selling our stuff? - Definitely not I.

I think that SY might not be the perfect place to sell "apples on white". The main/unique advantage SY has is IMHO the networking/SEO features. For those hard to find "bear dancing with elephant on the top of building" niche-type of images this might prove to be perfect.

In any case, I am not going to enter any kind of price war with my networking buddies. Most of us are looking to partner with sites that complement our stuff rather than compete, anyway.

Agree. We are uploading our usual stock, though not all of it, but don't really expect a lot of sales from it.

It's going to be the niche subjects that aren't available all over the net that bring in the sales, and it's common sense to charge more than $1 for those.

267
I use WP Affiliate on my blog site to reward people whose incoming links results in a sale of my eBook (but 30% there!) and it would certainly work in this environment. I think that each person would have to use the unique affiliate code on the incoming link and the system keeps track of sales as a result of the link (although I think it keeps track of any sale in a fixed number of days after the first entry into the site, which may not be appropriate in our case). However, I'm not at all sure how it would know about the different size images etc. it is one thing to set it up for single item, another altogether to track the complexity we are potentially building.

Having said all that, I'm not sure I'm bothered about affiliate payments particularly - we don't want to get affiliate trolls in the network that just set up sites to funnel sales to real sites and take a commission!

Steve

I agree with Steve on this.

Symbiostock - Network Building / Change of Address
« on: April 17, 2013, 15:59 »
Just a note for those networked to us, our Symbio site has moved from http://photo.travelling-light.net to http://images.travelling-light.net, replacing our Photoshelter site. There's a redirect on the photo subdomain, but it would be better to use the new address.

Apologies for any oddities with our site over the next 24 hours or so.

269
No problem with right click being available, it's only 600px with our name plastered across it - it's advertising if somebody uses it.

I don't see any real point to having a link from the image when it's only to the same size.

 We have requested that our portfolio be deleted at Yay. We had only uploaded 200, but they are coming down.

2. Can we loose the rounded corners on Similar images please? It makes my pano's look odd.

Add

.widget-featured img
{
  border-top-left-radius: 1px;
  border-top-right-radius: 1px;
  border-bottom-right-radius: 1px;
  border-bottom-left-radius: 1px;
}

to your child .css

But I am curious - is there a cookie requirement based on what country you live in? I thought cookies and javascript were now pretty much something you can't live without.

It's a legal requirement for British controlled Web sites, and has been for nearly a year. There are Wordpress plugins to pop up the notices.

273

That sounds useful. I'm not sure you can edit php in the css editor. I think I remember reading that you can edit php pages by adding code to the functions.php page. You might want to check into that.

I will have another look at that thanks

Does it work/not work for anyone else?   I do not want to spend a lot (more) time working it out if it does not work for most people

Works for me, Firefox 20.0.1 on Windows 7. Looked at your site in French and Chinese...

274
How can I show the latest images  and featured images in two columns in my side bar, instead of the single column that it is now.

How can I make image category - all images

And how can I make slideshow of some of my images in my homepage. Thanks

1. What template are you using for the home page? If you use Home Page CTAs these widgets show up in 3 columns. Otherwise you need to widen the sidebar in the other templates.

2. Create a new category called 'All Images' in Royalty Free Images > Image Categories and put everything into it.

3. Get a slideshow plugin from wordpress.org. We use Meta Slider, but there are plenty of others.

Good luck!

I've noticed on my other wp site that there are a lot of spammers who leave irrelevant comments touting their sites

Me too, but it doest look like spam, but like comments that have been wrongly ending in my site....
jean

No, it's just standard spambot droppings. The spam is only the URL in the website field , so things like Akismet don't always pick it up.
