thanks for letting us know. wow, 11 sales, total $2.75, 65 images.

that's pretty helpful but probably impossible advice for a slacker like me. i tend to focus on only one thing at once and it normally takes a really long time.

i'd like to pose kone's question to sjlocke, who seems to accomplish a lot whilst appearing at every forum i visit. i know he's two or three different people, but i still like to learn of his organizational secrets too.

+1  that made me happy or at least a warm fuzzy feeling after all the doom and gloom. :)

they're also holding the photos for at least 6 months for only 20 cents.  >:( that's a pretty leap of faith for any photographer. i wouldn't upload the best just for that.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Shorter review times
« on: March 09, 2010, 20:51 »
review times seem shorter, 2-5 days, but i also received my first lcv rejection:

"With the rapid growth of the iStock collection, we give valuable consideration to each file but unfortunately cannot accept all submissions. Please don't take it personally. This isn't necessarily a reflection of your photography or skill, rather a decision by iStock to determine commercial applications for your images as royalty-free stock."

supposedly is never reject on any ground other than technical, but this new direction may help it pare down some of its bulk.

drat, i was hoping BigStock had changed their rules with their redesign.

The new design looks okay to me, but has anyone tried submitting images yet?

I just submitted 20 images and it took me almost a half an hour!

hi lisa! since you're 'planning' on going exclusive elsewhere, won't submitting to BigStock hold your new images hostage for another three months? did the rules change or have you?  :D

Yes, I'd agree with that reviewer's sentiment, too.

The shot of the bird itself is fine, but the image as a whole needs work. If it was me I'd crop and rotate the image so that the bird was vertical with his beak pointing to the top left - this would give him a reason to be placed where he is. Next I'd get rid of the other branches and clone out the distracting spots on the remaining branch. As a finishing touch I'd make the sky light blue and use levels to make the branch a dark green, which would give the image a nicely strong graphical element. Here's what two minutes in Photoshop can do:

Nice work, but I think it's just a matter of taste. Someone could do it another way. I didn't want to touch-up sky, because it was cloudy, and IS sometimes doesn't like this kind of manipulating.

i personally would probably redo my photo like the one on the right also. but these two images also represent perfectly the style of is, the natural (left) and ss, the processed (right). since you're exclusive on is, sharply, i wonder why you don't veer towards the is style?

285

It is RM, I checked. Sorry for a little bit of panic from my side.

you're good to go then.  :) from what country are you submitting to reuters?

286

To be honest, I do not know. But, I can not believe that IS will ask me to give up my photojournalism career to become exclusice stock photographer. I'll better ask support.

ok, i'm pretty sure reuters is doing rm licensing since they're a major macro news supplier. you really need to find out from who you're selling your photos to how they are licensing their sales. if they don't know, neither will is.

287
I am getting puzzled, too. If I sell newspaper worthy editorial pictures through Reuters, what then (about IS exclusivity)?

again, is reuters selling your editorial image with a rf or rm licence? that's your assignment for the day.

288
Well, I am not selling them to my local newspaper, but to other agencies equivalent to IS (DT, SS)... I wouldn't bother asking if there were not the direct IS competition.

both ss and dt are selling editorial images with a rf licence, meaning they're sold without registering who the buyers are. so, you wouldn't be able to go exclusive with is in this case. however, if you were to sell these same editorial images at alamy with a rm licence (registering every single buyer along the way), then you're gold. by the way, alamy only sell editorials with rm licence, no ifs or buts. that's one of the differences between microstock and macrostock.

the breath and scope of the discussions here as compared to the in-house ones elsewhere is just incomparable. the freedom of speech is such an invaluable commodity here only enabled with leaf's gentle moderating.

I think you missed the nudge nudge wink wink in his post  ;D
Well I got a bit scared of Warren. He sounds so stern.  ;)

LOL, you, FD who fears no one, is scared of Warren, one of the nicest people on the forum? ha ha!

I didn't know you can set your own EL prices...where can you edit them?

this is only available to those members with 100 dl+, on the pager where you submit the image info.

After a bit of research, I do believe it's his daughter.

Ah, ok.  It'd be nice for a "new member" to give details when asking something like this.

she offered to provide her birth certificate in another post.  :)

i'm a bit curious as to why (now)?

i have a sony vaio desktop. they're great on design, but not on speed. i'm sure you can get a faster laptop out there. but, like dogs, i think the pc chooses the owner... :D

General Stock Discussion / Re: Tear Sheets - Post your finds here
« on: February 16, 2010, 11:33 »
Cool.  thanks for posting.  I've been reading about the Red Carpet program.  Do you use it often?  Does it obligate all your images?

only 10 per event are obligatory, but they'd like to see as many as you have. nevertheless, your images become theirs exclusively for 2 years, irregardless of whether you upload them or not. i'd use your own contact whenever possible rather than the Red Carpet program, even if they are a great team to work with.

i recently photographed the santa barbara film fest through shutterstock's on the red carpet program. one of them made it to the NY Post (newspaper), which shutterstock kindly let me know. :-)

Why do so many people find that SS is their biggest earning site in dollars? Not because it has the highest return per download, or highest commissions. It's because they sell the most licenses.
Aaaahhhh.... I think I'll put it in big red letters too  :P

SS and TS both give 0.25$ to starters, yes. At TS you will be a starter till hell freezes over. At SS, you have a growth path and with a decent port you'll be soon on 0.33$. I'm for a while on 0.36$.

Then, SS has regular ELs at 28$ and frequent ODs, giving an effective RPD of 0.60$ or so.
TS will give a maximum of 0.80$ on image pack sales, so even with 50% IP sales on TS, you'll still have a lower RPD.

Finally, since TS will only be accessible through IS, they'll throw your full sizes to the crocodiles, while at SS, most of us upload reduced sizes.

in my experience, i find ss to be the biggest earner due to the high # of ELs + ODs, rather than the #of licenses sold. I have yet to have an EL at is (i wonder why?). does thinkstock have ELs or ODs? if not, then a pure sub site is just a sub site. it really need a high turnover to make it worthwhile.

also, i've not seen anything lower than .36 for a sub sale or xsmall credit sale at 123. however i've seen $5+ for their extra large tiffs.

i guess people's rancor at ts has a lot to do with taking away the credit sales program in existence at StockXpert, where again i have seen $5+ sales for extra large images.

however, i don't see ts as a bad thing. i use it to dump, er, i mean place my more marginal photos that haven't sold. as an independent, i mix and match all the different agencies to their best use. you get to know what each agency's strengths and weaknesses are and place your portfolio accordingly.

I think video is a big thing, but still I don't want every image to blink and move.

Still images are somehow more "economical" than video. A Great photo can sometimes tell a story in just two seconds, a video wastes much more viewer's time.

I think there is room for both still and video imagery.

even when puruising editorial stuff, i really avoid video stories. you can watch something for 20 seconds or more, and still not get what the point was. a good photo establishes that for you in a blink of an eye. as for commercial videos, don't we channel surf just to avoid them?

298

Thanks, I thought that even the submission test photos had to meet all the release stuff.  I will definitely upload my more captivating photos the next time.

you will also need to round this out with either a food shot, an isolation shot or a people shot, but definitely only one travel shot. some people have shown their really gorgeous travel photos but was not able to pass muster with all three.

299

Unfortunately a lot of my more interesting shots have copyright issues so I can't make money off of them.

For example I would love to use this shot, but I would definitely need a release:

if this is just for the istock submission test, i'd use my most interesting photos, including this one above. for the test, pr will not be required. you can submit more pr friendly stuff after you pass.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Need recommendation on a P&S Camera
« on: February 02, 2010, 21:34 »
I was pretty impressed with the Canon s90 when I looked at it a few months ago.  It isjavascript:void(0) surprisingly similar to the G11 but in a compact form.  It has the same sensor as the G11

You can set the front dial to change a variety of functions and it seemed like a pretty UI.  It can also take RAW if that is of interest.

i have this camera, but i find the noise to be unacceptable. but, i'm spoiled by my new nikon d700.  ::)

i used to love p&s until i took up dslr. the only drawback to this camera is that it does NOT have a viewfinder. but most people prefer to shoot through the ld. however, i find it hard to see what the picture actually is during the day and is not as accurate as looking through a viewfinder.

it's also more than $250 (more like $420), but it's the latest hot p&s.
